Randomized, Triple-Blind, and Parallel-Controlled Trial of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation for Cognitive Rehabilitation after Stroke.

Right hemisphere stroke frequently results in hemispatial neglect, a disabling condition that can significantly impede the recovery process. The chronic presence of neglect has been linked to poorer outcomes in both cognitive and motor domains. As an adjunct to conventional neuropsychological interventions, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS)-a noninvasive technique that modulates neural excitability through low-intensity electrical currents-has gained attention for its potential to enhance cortical plasticity and support functional improvement in affected individuals. In this study

Peg Forest Rehabilitation - A novel spatial navigation based cognitive rehabilitation paradigm for experimental neurotrauma.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) results from mechanical forces applied to the head. Ensuing cascades of complex pathophysiology transition the injury event into a disease process. The enduring constellation of emotional, somatic, and cognitive impairments degrade quality of life for the millions of TBI survivors suffering from long-term neurological symptoms. Rehabilitation strategies have reported mixed results, as most have not focused on specific symptomatology or explored cellular processes. The current experiments evaluated a novel cognitive rehabilitation paradigm for brain-injured and unin

"Body & Brain": effects of a multicomponent exercise intervention on physical and cognitive function of adults with dementia - study protocol for a quasi-experimental controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Dementia is a leading cause of death and disability that was declared as one of the greatest health and social care challenges of the twenty-first century. Regular physical activity and exercise have been proposed as a non-pharmacological strategy in disease prevention and management. Multicomponent Training (MT) combines aerobic, strength, balance and postural exercises and might be an effective training to improve both functional capacity and cognitive function in individuals with dementia (IwD). Nevertheless, data on the effects of MT in IwD are still limited and the extent to w

Exercise and Urtica dioica extract ameliorate hippocampal insulin signaling, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and cognitive function in STZ-induced diabetic rats.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus is related to cognitive impairments and molecular abnormalities of the hippocampus. A growing body of evidence suggests that Urtica dioica (Ud) and exercise training (ET) have potential therapeutic effects on diabetes and its related complications. Therefore, we hypothesized that the combined effect of exercise training (ET) and Ud might play an important role in insulin signaling pathway, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and cognitive impairment in diabetic rats. METHODS: Forty animals were divided into five groups (N = 8): healthy-sedentary (H-sed), diabe

Psychological benefits of bilateral and unilateral plyometric training configurations in post-pubertal highly trained male soccer players.

This study examined the effects of different plyometric training configurations on mental well-being in post-pubertal highly trained male soccer players. Participants were assigned to bilateral (4 × 8; n = 10), high-volume unilateral (4 × 8; n = 10), or low-volume unilateral (4 × 4; n = 11) training groups. Pre-post assessments included cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety, self-confidence, attention, and emotional competence. Baseline scores were similar across groups for most variables (p > 0.05), except total emotional competence, which was higher in the unilateral 4 × 4 group (F = 13.4, p <

Modulation of network centrality and gray matter microstructure using multi-session brain stimulation and memory training.

Neural mechanisms of behavioral improvement induced by repeated transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) combined with cognitive training are yet unclear. Previously, we reported behavioral effects of a 3-day visuospatial memory training with concurrent anodal tDCS over the right temporoparietal cortex in older adults. To investigate intervention-induced neural alterations we here used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) datasets available from 35 participants of this previous study, acquired before and after the intervention. To delineate chan…

Cognitive Bias Modification for Behavior Change in Alcohol and Smoking Addiction: Bayesian Meta-Analysis of Individual Participant Data.

Cognitive Bias Modification (CBM) refers to a family of interventions targeting substance-related cognitive biases, which have been found to play a role in the maintenance of addictive behaviors. In this study, we conducted a Bayesian meta-analysis of individual patient data from studies investigating the effects of CBM as a behavior change intervention for the treatment of alcohol and tobacco use disorders, in individuals aware of the behavior change goal of the studies. Main outcomes included reduction in the targeted cognitive biases after the intervention and in substance use or relapse ra

Hoop training: a pilot study assessing the effectiveness of a multisensory approach to treatment of body image disturbance in anorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: We tested in a pilot study a new intervention for body image disturbance in anorexia nervosa (AN). Unlike common treatment approaches our hoop training targeted not only cognitive-emotional and visual aspects of body image, but also tactile and body-scaled action components. METHODS: We assessed cognitive, visual, tactile and body-scaled action aspects of body image disturbance before and after completion of hoop training. Twelve AN patients completed treatment as usual (TAU) for body image, 14 completed hoop training in addition to TAU. RESULTS: Results show that patients who compl

Effects of a computerized working memory training program on working memory, attention, and academics in adolescents with severe LD and comorbid ADHD: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Youths with coexisting learning disabilities (LD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at risk for poor academic and social outcomes. The underlying cognitive deficits, such as poor working memory (WM), are not well targeted by current treatments for either LD or ADHD. Emerging evidence suggests that WM might be improved by intensive and adaptive computerized training, but it remains unclear whether this intervention would be effective for adolescents with severe LD and comorbid ADHD. METHODS: A total of sixty 12- to 17-year olds with LD/ADHD (52 male, 8 female,

A comparison of two relaxation procedures for reducing cognitive and somatic anxiety.

The effectiveness of two different relaxation procedures was compared in treating snake anxious people who expressed anxiety primarily in a somatic or a cognitive manner. Forty moderately snake phobic subjects were categorized as either "somatically-anxious" or "cognitively-anxious" on the basis of a questionnaire. Half of the subjects in each group were given modified progressive relaxation training, and the other half received training in Agni-Yoga for four sessions. After completion of training, approach distance, subjective fear and pulse rates were measured during a snake approach test. I

When Brain Models Aren't Universal: Benchmarking of Ethnic Bias in MRI-Based Cognitive Prediction Across Modalities.

Predictive neuroimaging models promise precision medicine but risk exacerbating health inequities if they perform unevenly across ethnic/racial groups. Using the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development data, we benchmarked ethnic/racial bias in models predicting cognitive functioning from 81 MRI phenotypes across four training strategies. Models trained on one ethnicity performed best within that group. Models trained on participants sampled without regard to ethnicity, a common practice, performed better on White participants, likely because the ABCD sample was predominantly White. Training on

Structural brain alterations and predictors of clinical improvement in functional cognitive disorder after concussion.

Functional cognitive disorder (FCD) is an under-studied yet likely prevalent subtype of functional neurological disorder (FND), with neural mechanisms that remain poorly understood. While studies of other FND subtypes have revealed structural and functional brain alterations across several large-scale brain networks, no study to date has investigated neural alterations in FCD. Here, we examined structural grey matter brain differences as measured from magnetic resonance imaging in 37 adults with FCD after concussion compared to 25 post-concussion controls. We compared FreeSurfer-based cortical
