OBJECTIVE: Using a cross-sectional survey, to investigate the vitamin D status of a random sample of 80 mother-child pairs (child age 3-24 months) in a Manitoba community with a high incidence of rickets.
METHOD: A questionnaire on feeding habits, gestational history, maternal diet and vitamin supplements was administered to mothers in their homes with the assistance of a local interpreter. Venous blood was collected from both mother and child for serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels.

The extent to which marital disruption causes poor mental health is not well characterized even after 20 years of research. This is due in large part to the fact that previous research has ignored the possibility of selection. The communication skills in a 4-year-old girl with Rett syndrome (RS) prior to, during and after the characteristic regression period are presented. The case study serves to provide a detailed description of the typical communication skills seen in this population, even though this child must be considered an atypical case of RS. The case study emphasizes the need for the assessment and treatment of communication skills in cases with RS to focus on the intentionality and functionality of the child's communication.

This paper surveys the literature on prenatal alcohol exposure. The focus is on studies of speech, language, and communication skills evidenced by children diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome and fetal alcohol effects. Concomitant physical, behavioral, intellectual, and learning patterns are reviewed. Symptoms presented by alcohol-exposed children are compared to those seen in other developmentally delayed children. Future needs in areas of identification, assessment, and treatment are discussed.

Included in this article is a summary of the information gathered during 1989, after conducting a community project dealing with the prevention and care for abused children in Cantón de la Unión, Provincia de Cartago. Sixty-five cases of child abuse were cared for during this period 58.5% dealt with physical harm while 41.5% included diverse forms of sexual abuse. A case of gastric duplication in connection with an aberrant pancreas in a 14 months old boy is related. The non-specificity of signs and symptoms explains why the diagnosis of these lesions has been often mislead and usually made at laparotomy. Ultrasound and technetium scan could adequately characterize these anomalies pre-operatively. Simple excision is the treatment of choice.

Different ways of auditing screening for undescended testes, using Hospital Activity Analysis data, hospital case notes, and community/general practice records are described. The cumulative orchidopexy rate per 1000 male births in successive birth cohorts is a simple tool for monitoring trends within a health district. Information gained from community/general practice records is valuable in highlighting problem areas in screening, such as the lack of clear diagnostic criteria and referral pathways.

Preventing amputation continues to be a significant challenge when popliteal vascular injuries occur. A retrospective review of cases from the San Diego County (California) Trauma System identified 108 patients with 76 blunt and 32 penetrating arterial injuries.
