Magnitude and factors for method discontinuation and switching among long acting reversible contraceptive users in health facilities of Southern Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARCs) are contraceptives that prevent unplanned pregnancy in a more safer and effective way than other modern short acting methods. However, method discontinuation and switching are still challenges for utilization of LARCs in resource limited countries for several reasons. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine magnitude and factors for method discontinuation and switching among LARCs users in health facilities of Southern Ethiopia. METHODS: A Facility based record review was used to collect data from May to June 2019. Three hospitals

Systematic adaptation of a visual-aided adolescent nutrition intervention from peri-urban Burkina Faso for rural Uganda using intervention mapping.

BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young adults (AYAs) aged 10–24 years in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), including rural Uganda, frequently exhibit low nutrition literacy and poor diet quality, increasing their risk of malnutrition and diet-related non-communicable diseases. Many nutrition interventions are developed in high-income or school-based settings, limiting their relevance for low-income, rural, and out-of-school populations. Context-specific, community-anchored interventions deliverable through existing community health systems remain scarce. This study systematically adapted an adolescent nutr

Meeting the reproductive health needs of female sex workers in Côte d'Ivoire: protecting the human right to dignified health.

The sexual and reproductive health needs of female sex workers (FSW) are often understudied and underserved in the context of HIV-related research in countries across Sub-Saharan Africa and West Africa. We assessed the lived experiences of FSW across Côte d'Ivoire to characterize unmet reproductive health needs and opportunities to address them. From February-August, 2020, ENDA Santé, Côte d'Ivoire conducted 75 in-depth interviews and 15 focus group discussions with FSW and community informants in five cities in Côte d'Ivoire. Themes that emerged included the inconsistent use of contraception

[Preparedness for summer illnesses and emergencies in Chile, 2024-2025: lessons from an innovative policyPreparação para doenças e emergências no verão de 2024-2025 no Chile: lições de uma política inovadora].

Climate change and the increasing frequency of extreme heat events have heightened the importance of health issues during the summer season. This season is also associated with greater population mobility, outdoor recreational activities, and exposure to biological and environmental risks, all of which require coordinated responses from health systems. Within this context, the Ministry of Health of Chile implemented the summer seasonal illness and emergency preparedness plan 2024-2025, with the goal of strengthening surveillance, intersectoral coordination, and risk communication in response t

Opportunities, barriers, and recommendations in down syndrome research.

BACKGROUND: Recent advances in medical care have increased life expectancy and improved the quality of life for people with Down syndrome (DS). These advances are the result of both pre-clinical and clinical research but much about DS is still poorly understood. In 2020, the NIH announced their plan to update their DS research plan and requested input from the scientific and advocacy community. OBJECTIVE: The National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) and the LuMind IDSC Foundation worked together with scientific and medical experts to develop recommendations for the NIH research plan. METHODS: N

Predicting Stroke Risk Based on Health Behaviours: Development of the Stroke Population Risk Tool (SPoRT).

BACKGROUND: Health behaviours, important factors in cardiovascular disease, are increasingly a focus of prevention. We appraised whether stroke risk can be accurately assessed using self-reported information focused on health behaviours. METHODS: Behavioural, sociodemographic and other risk factors were assessed in a population-based survey of 82,259 Ontarians who were followed for a median of 8.6 years (688,000 person-years follow-up) starting in 2001. Predictive algorithms for 5-year incident stroke resulting in hospitalization were created and then validated in a similar 2007 survey of 28,

The Israeli eye care system through a public and global health lens.

Global eye health is increasingly recognized as integral to achieving universal health coverage (UHC), with equity, access, and service integration serving as key indicators of system performance. Israel provides a distinctive case study, having established UHC through the 1994 National Health Insurance Law, which guarantees essential services to all residents. This review assesses Israel’s eye care system through a public and global health lens, applying the WHO health system building blocks to examine its organization, strengths, and persistent challenges. Israel benefits from strong integra

How do we improve maternal and child health outcomes in Ghana?

Maternal and infant mortality includes a number of health challenges in Ghana, with outcomes among the worst in the subregion and the world. Our aim here was to provide insights into how Ghana has approached these challenges, with a view to making suggestions for the future. Ghana has made significant gains in reducing infant and maternal deaths in the past decade through initiatives like the Free Maternal Care Policy, the Community-based Health Planning Services, and the National Health Insurance Policy. These policies have improved financial access to maternal and obstetric health services,

City-wide cognitive function screening study of older adults in Beijing reveal protective association of urban green space.

Green spaces offer a passive yet impactful component of urban design, with the potential to enhance cognitive function and reduce the risk of dementia in older adults. While the cognitive benefits of green spaces are recognized, particularly in improving cognitive performance among older populations, this area remains a critical yet underexplored domain within urban health research. This study aimed to investigate the association of exposure to green spaces with cognitive function among older adults across urban Beijing. A total of 62,333 participants from 114 communities were included in a ci

Perinatal periods of risk: analytic preparation and phase 1 analytic methods for investigating feto-infant mortality.

The Perinatal Periods of Risk (PPOR) methods provide the necessary framework and tools for large urban communities to investigate feto-infant mortality problems. Adapted from the Periods of Risk model developed by Dr. Brian McCarthy, the six-stage PPOR approach includes epidemiologic methods to be used in conjunction with community planning processes. Stage 2 of the PPOR approach has three major analytic parts: Analytic Preparation, which involves acquiring, preparing, and assessing vital records files; Phase 1 Analysis, which identifies local opportunity gaps; and Phase 2 Analyses, which inve

Community based distribution of ivermectin in eastern Sudan: acceptability and early post-treatment reactions.

A study to monitor ivermectin acceptability and post-treatment reactions during mass community distribution was carried out in eastern Sudan, where severe reactive onchodermatitis is prevalent. Of 1081 individuals eligible for treatment, 1076 (99.5%) accepted the ivermectin. Post-treatment reactions were monitored by self reporting, 5 d after a single dose of about 150 micrograms/kg (range 103-200 micrograms/kg); 230 persons reported adverse events (21.4%). No reaction was rated as severe. The most common problem was itching with cutaneous papular eruptions (16.2%). Local oedematous swelling w

Integrating Neurology, Palliative Care and Emergency Services in ALS: A Community-Integrated Neuropalliative Pathway in Modena, Italy.

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that causes severe motor, respiratory and communication impairment and imposes a high psychosocial burden on patients and families. Recent evidence shows that integrated neuropalliative care-early collaboration between neurology and palliative services with community support-improves quality of life and reduces avoidable hospitalisations. Yet there are few descriptions of how such integration is operationalised. OBJECTIVE: This study examines a Community-Integrated Neuropalliative Pathway (CINP) impleme

Community-acquired infections among children in an urban environment: a 2-year prospective study in Liverpool, U.K.

Community-acquired infections are an important cause of admission of children to hospital. We have made a 2-year prospective study of 1,599 children admitted with infection to the Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital in order to determine the pattern of infections, their seasonal distribution and the role of the laboratory in isolating causative agents. Respiratory infections (32% cases) and gastroenteritis (28% cases) were the principal causes of admission. Of all admissions, 64% were children aged less than 1 year. Appropriate specimens were obtained and/or investigations made of 48% cases. O

Predicting measles elimination through surveillance-response and health system determinants: a village-level structural equation modeling study in Cirebon Regency, Indonesia.

OBJECTIVES: Measles elimination remains a major public health challenge despite the widespread availability of effective vaccines. Rising outbreaks in some countries suggest that high immunization coverage alone may not be enough to stop transmission. However, evidence remains limited regarding how surveillance-response, health system capacity, nutritional status, and community vulnerability interact to influence measles elimination within a single epidemiological framework. This study aimed to develop and validate an integrated epidemiological prediction model for measles elimination using st
