Real-time brain-computer interface control of walking exoskeleton with bilateral sensory feedback.

PURPOSE: Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) offer a pathway to restore ambulation in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). However, existing BCI systems for gait are unidirectional and lack sensory feedback. This study aimed to demonstrate that a bidirectional brain-computer interface (BDBCI) can simultaneously enable real-time brain-controlled walking and artificial leg sensation via electrical stimulation of the sensory cortex. METHODS: Epilepsy patients undergoing bilateral interhemispheric subdural electrocorticography (ECoG) implantation were recruited for this proof-of-concept study.

Ensemble deep learning approach for traffic video analytics in edge computing.

Video analytics is the new era of computer vision in identifying and classifying objects. Traffic surveillance videos can be analysed to using computer vision to comprehend the road traffic. Monitoring the real-time road traffic is essential to control them. Computer vision helps in identifying the vehicles on the road, but the present techniques either perform the video analysis on the cloud platform or the edge platform. The former introduces more delay in processing while controlling is needed in real-time, the latter is not accurate in estimating the current road traffic. YOLO algorithms a

Evaluation of MRI-based machine learning approaches for computer-aided diagnosis of dementia in a clinical data warehouse.

A variety of algorithms have been proposed for computer-aided diagnosis of dementia from anatomical brain MRI. These approaches achieve high accuracy when applied to research data sets but their performance on real-life clinical routine data has not been evaluated yet. The aim of this work was to study the performance of such approaches on clinical routine data, based on a hospital data warehouse, and to compare the results to those obtained on a research data set. The clinical data set was extracted from the hospital data warehouse of the Greater Paris area, which includes 39 different hospit

Does fixation method affects temporomandibular joints after mandibular advancement?

PURPOSE: Sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) is a standard procedure in which miniplates and screws are used to achieve stabilization. Although the titanium plate and screw fixation system is stable, resorbable fixation systems are also used. There is currently no consensus on the ideal fixation technique for SSRO procedures and its effect on the condyle. We aimed to evaluate the stress distribution on temporomandibular joints (TMJ). METHODS: A 3D finite element model of a hemimandible was designed and 5 mm advancement was simulated on a computer model. Four different fixation techniques we

Detection of glaucoma using retinal fundus images: A comprehensive review.

Content-based image analysis and computer vision techniques are used in various health-care systems to detect the diseases. The abnormalities in a human eye are detected through fundus images captured through a fundus camera. Among eye diseases, glaucoma is considered as the second leading case that can result in neurodegeneration illness. The inappropriate intraocular pressure within the human eye is reported as the main cause of this disease. There are no symptoms of glaucoma at earlier stages and if the disease remains unrectified then it can lead to complete blindness. The early diagnosis

Computer-aided diagnosis of the airways: beyond nodule detection.

Although to date, the major impetus for the development of computer-assisted diagnosis (CAD) has been the detection of pulmonary nodules, CAD should properly be viewed as a potential tool for assisting radiologic interpretation of the entire gamut of chest diseases, including not just enhanced detection of disease but also characterization and quantification, ideally leading to improved patient management. The use of CAD to improve visualization of the airways using advanced computer techniques, including sophisticated methods for obtaining 3-dimensional segmentation of the central airways and

A computer study of biodegradable plates for internal fixation of mandibular angle fractures.

PURPOSE: This computer-based study was performed to determine the suitability of small biodegradable plate systems for mandibular angle fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a 3-dimensional computer model of the mandible, fracture mobility and plate strain were calculated for bite forces applied on 13 bite points on the dental arch. The angle fracture was fixed with 2 polylactide (PLA) midiplates or with 2 PLA maxiplates. The first plate was positioned buccally on the external oblique ridge. Two positions of the second plate were studied: halfway up the height of the mandible or on the lower b

"Engineering Sense": Donald Hebb, Nathaniel Rochester, and the Origins of Deep Learning.

This paper examines the origins of the concept of "deep learning," and traces it to its origins in the ideas of the psychologist Donald Olding Hebb. In the 1930s, Hebb formulated a theory of brain function that was meant to explain the surprising intelligence scores of brain surgery patients. This paper then traces how Hebb's cell assembly theory found its way into the earliest attempts by the IBM engineer Nathanial Rochester to engineer a learning computer in the 1950s. Finally, I examined the legacy of this encounter between neurophysiology and engineering for modern artificial intelligence
