Problem gambling causes significant harm to individuals and society. Financial losses from gambling in Australia exceed those anywhere else in the world. Problem gamblers are overrepresented among substance users and rural and remote Australians. Limited research exists on the impact of gambling advertising on problem gambling among those seeking substance use treatment, in rural/remote areas, and protective factors that may guard against these impacts. This study examined whether self-efficacy to control gambling moderated the relationship between the perceived impact of gambling advertising

OBJECTIVE: Peer victimization in school is common, with emerging literature suggesting that it may also increase risk for substance abuse. Yet, little is known about the underlying mechanisms within this risk pathway. The objective of this study is to use a prospective 3-wave design to examine the mediating role of depressive symptomatology on the relationship between peer victimization and substance use, as well as examine if the pathway varies based on gender.
METHOD: 801 youth between 6th and 12th grade completed surveys across three years, which included measures on school peer victimizat

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The present review compares and contrasts the diagnostic entities and taxonomy of substance use and addictive disorders in the beta draft of the Eleventh Revision of the International Classification of Diseases (ICD 11), which was released in November 2016, and the Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), which was published in mid-2013. Recently published papers relevant to these two classification systems are examined. New initiatives in diagnosis and assessment including the addictions neuroclinical assessment are noted.

OBJECTIVES: Various factors impact sleep health including mental health and substance use. Mental health issues and substance use continue to rise in the United States. Yet, the association between mental health, substance use and sleep health in adults remains unclear.
METHODS: We used multivariable linear regression models to examine the associations between mental health (poor mental health days in the past 30 days) and substance use (marijuana, tobacco, alcohol) with sleep health (individual dimensions of sleep: alertness, sleep efficiency, duration, and sleep health composite score) in 4

BACKGROUND: The literature on the association between subjective effects (SEs; i.e., how an individual perceives their physiological and psychological reactions to a drug) and substance use disorders (SUDs) is largely limited to community samples. The present study addressed the following aims in a clinical sample: whether SEs predict general versus substance-specific SUD in adolescence and adulthood after controlling for conduct disorder symptoms (CDsymp); whether SEs predict SUDs across drug classes; whether SEs predict change in SUD from adolescence to adulthood; and whether there are racia

BACKGROUND: Extremely low birth weight (ELBW; <1,000 g) infants are the most vulnerable babies and are at higher risk for experiencing overprotective (i.e., controlling and intrusive) parenting, which is hypothesized to contribute to the risk for mental disorders. Despite the increased risk for anxiety disorders and decreased risk for alcohol or substance use disorders seen in ELBW survivors, no research has examined the impact of parenting. This study investigated if overprotective parenting mediates links between ELBW birth status and psychiatric disorders in adulthood.

Psychiatric comorbidity and impaired emotional functioning have been previously reported in adult substance abusers but have been less well documented in adolescents. Thus, we investigated mental health problems and emotion regulation abilities in adolescents and young adults with cannabis dependence. Moreover, we explored the relationships between consumption modalities and affective style. Therefore, 32 cannabis abusers (CA) and 30 healthy controls completed a battery of self-reports measuring depression (BDI-13), anxiety (STAI-Y), alexithymia (TAS20; BVAQ-B), anhedonia (PAS; SAS), and sensa

Substance abuse among individuals with schizophrenia is common and is often associated with poor clinical outcomes. Comprehensive, integrated pharmacological and psychosocial treatments have been shown to improve these outcomes. While a growing number of studies suggest that second-generation antipsychotic medications may have beneficial effects on the treatment of co-occurring substance use disorders, this review suggests that the literature is still in its infancy. Few existing well controlled trials support greater efficacy of second-generation antipsychotics compared with first-generation

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance use disorders (SUD) frequently co-occur during adolescence and are associated with substantial functional impairment and elevated risk for chronic comorbidity. Despite strong evidence supporting integrated, trauma-focused treatments for adults with PTSD + SUD, the adolescent treatment literature remains limited. Objective: This review synthesizes current evidence on the integrated treatments for co-occurring PTSD + SUD problems among adolescents and youth, with emphasis on evaluating the strength of the evidence and identifying key

BACKGROUND: Psychoactive substance use often begins during adolescence, and early initiation increases risks of problematic use and adverse health outcomes. Few evidence-based, technology-supported substance use prevention programs for adolescents exist in Europe. OurFutures (previously Climate Schools) is a web-based substance use prevention program developed in Australia that has been shown to improve substance-related knowledge and strengthen refusal and harm-minimization skills. This study aimed to adapt the OurFutures Alcohol and Cannabis course for German schools and to evaluate its feas

BACKGROUND: Anxiety symptoms are prevalent in individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) and significantly impact treatment outcomes and relapse risk. Recent evidence points to dysregulated interoceptive processing as a potential mechanism underlying anxiety in SUDs. This dysfunction may vary across substances due to their distinct pharmacological profiles. However, direct comparisons of multidimensional interoceptive profiles between different substance addictions and their links to anxiety remain limited.

Chemsex refers to the use of psychoactive drugs for sexual purposes-before or during sex. This phenomenon mainly affects men, in particular those belonging to the LGBTQIA+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer/questioning, asexual, and more diverse individuals) community. From the perspective of the transactional theory of stress, chemsex can be considered a strategy for coping with stress, which is why it is also extremely important to verify its role in functioning outside the sexual sphere. For this reason, this study verified the relationship between the use of chemsex, per

BACKGROUND: Disturbances in gain and loss processing have been extensively reported in adults with addiction, a brain disorder characterized by obsession with addictive substances or behaviours. Previous studies have provided conflicting results with respect to neural abnormalities in gain processing in addiction, and few investigations into loss processing.
METHODS: We conducted voxel-wise meta-analyses of abnormal task-evoked regional activities in adults with substance dependence and gambling addiction during the processing of gains and losses not related to their addiction (mainly monetar
