To elucidate the pathogenesis of diabetes in spontaneously diabetic Chinese hamsters (CHAD strain), a longitudinal study from just after weaning to overt diabetic state was performed. Doxorubicin (DXR), an anthracycline antineoplastic drug, is mainly metabolized to the C-13 dihydroderivative doxorubicinol (DXR-ol), which displays cytotoxic activity on various cell lines. Guinea pigs, gerbils, voles, golden hamsters and Chinese hamsters exposed to experimental infection with Moraxella bovis by ocular instillation or associated routes showed transient infections only and no clinical signs. Five strains of mice were of similarly low susceptibility but another, the C57 Bl strain, was relatively susceptible and treatment with corticosteroid before infection regularly produced keratoconjunctivitis. Cultured Chinese hamster ovary cells were incubated with dilutions of an oil shale retort process water and exposed to nautral sunlight. An enhancement of sevenfold to ninefold was seen in photoinduced cytotoxicity (by a colony-forming assay) and mutagenicity [at the hypoxanthine phosphoribosyltransferase (HPRT) locus] for cells pretreated with the process water compared to effects seen in cells exposed to sunlight only. The production of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells is often affected by position-effect variegation and the gradual loss of transgene expression over time.
