Systematic Review of Assessment in General Chemistry: Trends, Digital Innovations, and Integration of Theory-Laboratory Course.

BACKGROUND: Assessment in general chemistry plays an important role in supporting students' conceptual understanding and laboratory competencies. However, studies that systematically analyze and synthesize research findings related to assessment practices in both theoretical and laboratory-based general chemistry learning remain limited. Previous studies also indicate inconsistencies in the integration of assessment approaches across theoretical and practical learning contexts. Therefore, a comprehensive systematic literature review is needed to identify current trends, gaps, and future direct

What I Wish I Had to Train Endoscopy: The Need for Transformation of Endoscopy Education.

Over the past half century, endoscopy education has evolved from a personal craft to a global discipline. This narrative reflection traces that journey-from the early, unstructured apprenticeship era to today's call for scientific, standardized teaching. Through five decades of experience, it highlights the challenges of tradition-bound methods, the pivotal role of technology, and the urgent need for transformation through structured curricula, deliberate practice, and faculty development. The future of endoscopy education depends not only on innovation but also on our collective commitment to

Academic-to-Academic Partnership to Address the Nursing Shortage: The Center for Future Faculty.

The Center for Future Faculty is an innovative, multi-institutional model addressing the nurse faculty shortage through a collaborative, competency-based approach. Four regional universities partnered to prepare aspiring nurse educators via graduate coursework, mentored fellowships, and seminars aligned with National League for Nursing CNE® competencies. Seven students completed the inaugural year; most planned to pursue educator roles, and course evaluations showed high satisfaction and skill development. Partners benefited from strengthened faculty pipelines and shared academic resources. Ea

Sustainable pharmacy for training and education of pharmacy professionals.

Sustainability and environmental aspects of medicines are generally omitted in pharmacy curricula, despite the recognized burden of the pharmaceutical footprint. Pharmaceutical footprint refers to the societal, economic and environmental impact of pharmaceutical pollution produced during manufacture, distribution, prescription, consumption and waste management of medicines. In order to mitigate the impact of the pharmaceutical sector, a new educational approach based on Sustainable Pharmacy is required. Sustainable Pharmacy integrates education, society, economy, pharmacology, culture and envi

Inclusive Education without Paradigm Change: Explaining Thailand's Misalignment with the Salamanca Vision.

BACKGROUND: Thailand has formally committed to inclusive education for three decades, yet its schools continue to fall short of the transfor … tions, and support services without disturbing the single-standard logic that continues to organise curriculum, assessment, and teacher practice. Four interlocking structural conditions sustain this misalignment: a school system built around the average learner, a charity-oriented framing of disability, a standardised assessment regime, and a teacher role co …

Acceptability of Neuroscientific Interventions in Education.

Researchers are increasingly applying neuroscience technologies that probe or manipulate the brain to improve educational outcomes. However, their use remains fraught with ethical controversies. Here, we investigate the acceptability of neuroscience applications to educational practice in two groups of young adults: those studying bioscience who will be driving future basic neuroscience research and technology transfer, and those studying education who will be choosing among neuroscience-derived applications for their students. Respondents rated the acceptability of six scenarios describing ne

[An integrated course in occupational medicine. A proposed teaching program based on the new organization of the degree course in medicine and surgery].

The curriculum of Italian Medical School of the Faculty of Medicine has been recently renewed at a national level. Considering the numerous innovations introduced, a new role has been attributed to the teaching of occupational health, particularly occupational medicine. Occupational Medicine is usually regarded as a part of community medicine and, despite the fact that occupational disease may be in decline in industrially developed countries, the increasing concern regarding environmental pollution related health effects, stress the relevance of the methodologies already formulated within the…

Skill or Competency: What Should we be Assessing?

India introduced competency-based medical education (CBME) in the year 2019. There is often confusion between terms like ability, skill, and competency. The provided curriculum encourages teaching and assessing skills rather than competencies. Though competency includes skill, it is more than a mere skill, and ignoring the other aspects like communication, ethics, and professionalism can compromise the teaching of competencies as well as their intended benefits to the patient and the society. The focus on skills also undermines the assessment of relevant knowledge. This paper clarifies the dif…

Assessing student competency in compounding sterile preparations after instructional redesign.

INTRODUCTION: In 2023, United States Pharmacopeia updated its <797> standards for sterile compounding preparation. To ensure students received instruction on the most up-to-date content related to the standards, a sterile compounding course was redesigned to include additional assessment of student pharmacist competency to facilitate participation in a summer introductory pharmacy practice experience. A re-designed curriculum incorporating the new requirements led to a reduction in the number of hands-on practice opportunities in compounding sterile preparations for student pharmacists. This s…

A Clinically Immersive Medical Innovation Program for US MD Students: Curricular Description and Program Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: There is growing need for physician-innovators to address the mounting challenges within the US healthcare system. Despite this, there remains a significant gap in understanding of the efficacy of innovation programs for US MD candidates. We present initial program outcomes of a novel, clinically immersive medical innovation program offered to MD candidates at the David Geffen School of Medicine (DGSOM) at UCLA. METHODS: A novel clinically immersive medical innovation curriculum was developed based on existing and reputable medical innovation frameworks and tailored for medical st…

Our institution developed a novel C + C curriculum to teach PE to preclinical students. We aimed to assess the impact of this new curriculum on students' clinical skills and course evaluations in comparison to the traditional "head-to-toe" approach we'd used previously. Exploration of the integration of microbiology and immunology emerging topics into undergraduate medical education.

PURPOSE: Medical school educators face challenges determining which new and emerging topics to incorporate into medical school curricula, and how to do so. A study was conducted to gain a better understanding of the integration of emerging topics related to microbiology and immunology in the undergraduate medical curriculum (UME). METHODS: An anonymous survey with 17 questions was emailed to medical school faculty who teach immunology and/or microbiology through the DR-Ed listserv, the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Connect listserv, and attendees of the Association of Medical School…

Improving patient safety by enhancing raising concerns at medical school.

BACKGROUND: Doctors and medical students have a professional responsibility to raise concerns. Failure to raise concerns may compromise patient safety. It is widely known that medical students frequently encounter unprofessional behaviours in the workplace, but little is known about the barriers to raising concerns amongst medical students. This paper explores these issues and discusses some innovations in the medical undergraduate curriculum, offering a good practice model for other medical and healthcare curricula. We set out to ascertain the attitudes and experiences of medical students in …
