Evidence of bovine viral diarrhea, but absence of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis and bovine brucellosis in the endangered huemul deer (Hippocamelus bisulcus) in Chilean Patagonia.

We screened 18 endangered Chilean huemul (Hippocamelus bisulcus) for antibodies to infectious agents. We detected no antibody to bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1) or Brucella abortus (BA); two huemul had antibody to bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV). Cattle (n=35) had antibody to BVDV and BHV-1 but not BA.

Natural and experimental infection of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from the United States with an Ehrlichia sp. closely related to Ehrlichia ruminantium.

An Ehrlichia sp. (Panola Mountain [PM] Ehrlichia sp.) closely related to Ehrlichia ruminantium was recently detected in a domestic goat experimentally infested with lone star ticks (LSTs, Amblyomma americanum) collected from Georgia, USA. The infected goat exhibited pyrexia and mild clinical pathologic abnormalities consistent with ehrlichiosis. At least two other Ehrlichia species (Ehrlichia chaffeensis and Ehrlichia ewingii) are maintained in nature by a cycle involving LSTs as the primary vector and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginanus) as a known or suspected reservoir. To investigate …

Effects of reduced deer density on the abundance of Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) and Lyme disease incidence in a northern New Jersey endemic area.

We monitored the abundance of Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae) and the Lyme disease incidence rate after the incremental removal of white-tailed deer, Odocoileus virginianus Zimmermann, within a suburban residential area to determine whether there was a measurable decrease in the abundance of ticks due to deer removal and whether the reduction in ticks resulted in a reduction in the incidence rate within the human population. After three seasons, the estimated deer population was reduced by 46.7%, from the 2002 postfawning estimate of 2,899 deer (45.6 deer per km2) to a 2005 estimate of…

Phenotypic variation in seasonal adjustments of testis size, body weight, and food intake in deer mice: role of pineal function and ambient temperature.

We investigated pineal function as well as reproductive and energetic characteristics in male deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) that differentially respond to short photoperiod with full, partial or no gonadal regression. In mice at both high (23 degrees C) and low temperature (1 degree C), these phenotypic differences in reproductive responses to short days were not reflected by differences in urinary excretion of 6-sulphatoxy-melatonin, the main metabolite of pineal melatonin. Neither duration nor amplitude or phase-angle of nocturnal peaks in 6-sulphatoxymelatonin significantly differed be…

Molecular detection of Ehrlichia chaffeensis in marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus) and their parasitic Amblyomma triste ticks in Argentina suggests a local transmission cycle.

BACKGROUND: Since the first finding of Ehrlichia chaffeensis in the Argentinian marsh deer populations in 2018, we have conducted ongoing surveillance efforts to better understand the ecological and epidemiological dynamics of this zoonotic tick-borne pathogen in the region. METHODS: Over a period of 7 years (2018-2024) we analyzed blood and tissue samples from 40 marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus) and 13 parasitic Amblyomma triste ticks in the Paraná River Delta, Argentina. RESULTS: We identified E. chaffeensis DNA in two deer blood samples and in the salivary glands of three A. triste tic…

Case Report: Testicular teratoma with malignant transformation to melanoma and concurrent metastatic carcinoma of undetermined primary origin in a red deer (Cervus elaphus).

Testicular teratomas are rare germ cell neoplasms composed of two or more embryonic germ layers-ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. They are uncommon in domestic species, with only a few cases reported in wild mammals, and malignant transformation is rare. We report the case of a European red deer (Cervus elaphus), approximately 4 years of age, that presented with marked scrotal enlargement. Necropsy revealed an enlarged left testis weighing 3.29 kg. On sectioning, it showed complete loss of its normal architecture, with multiple multinodular solid areas and cystic regions containing dark fluid.…

An ingenious design from nature to accelerate the repair of long-bone critical defects: the longitudinal tubular transverse interconnection structure of deer antlers.

Deer antlers, the only mammalian bony organs capable of complete regeneration, exhibit a growth rate of 2.7 cm/day, far surpassing human long bones (1 mm/day). Long-bone critical defects (LBCDs) occur when defects exceed intrinsic healing capacity. While antler stem cells drive regeneration, their immunogenicity limits clinical translation. Antler extracellular matrix (ECM) components have been proven to enhance bone repair, the role of its unique "longitudinal tubule-transverse connection" structure remains unexplored. Here, matrix scaffolds (devoid of cellular/active components) were prepare…

A Case of XX Disorder of Sexual Development in a Female-Phenotype Roe Deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) Associated with Antlers Growth with Retained Velvet.

A 3-to-4-year-old roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) was admitted to the Veterinary Hospital. Although it showed well-developed antlers with retained velvet, an external female appearance and genitalia were evident. External biometrical measurements were taken for the antlers, and a computed tomography was performed. Molecular studies targeting the SRY gene were performed, and a PIS (polled intersex syndrome) mutation diagnosis was implemented. The gonads consisted of a right testicle paired with a left ovotestis. Histologically, the ovary-like structures in the ovotestis were functional, but t…

Paragonimus westermani metacercariae in two freshwater crab species in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, as a possible source of infection in wild boars and sika deer.

Paragonimiasis is a particular foodborne parasitic disease that is endemic to southern Kyushu, including Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. We previously detected Paragonimus westermani triploid larvae in meat samples obtained from wild boars and sika deer hunted in Akune City, Kagoshima Prefecture. These mammals act as paratenic hosts and their meat is a source of human paragonimiasis. Paratenic host mammals and humans become infected with the lung fluke, P. westermani, following consumption of second intermediate hosts, freshwater crab species, namely, Geothelphusa dehaani or Sawagani in Japanese,…

Estimating the Efficacy of a Commercial Phase I Inactivated Vaccine in Decreasing the Prevalence of Coxiella burnetii Infection and Shedding in Red Deer (Cervus elaphus).

The red deer (Cervus elaphus) is a relevant reservoir for Coxiella burnetii in Iberia. C. burnetii genotypes that infect red deer also infect humans and domestic animals. Integrated control approaches that target both domestic and wild ruminants are, therefore, required to reduce C. burnetii infection risks in Iberia, especially in wildlife-livestock-human interaction scenarios. The aim of this field experiment was to test the efficacy of an inactivated phase I vaccine [Inactivated phase I vaccine (IPIV); Coxevac®] when used to control C. burnetii shedding prevalence and burden in red deer as …

Seroprevalence of Leptospirosis, Brucellosis, and Q Fever in a Wild Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) Population Kept in a Fenced Reserve in Absence of Contact with Livestock.

Wildlife health is of interest for public and animal health because wild animals have been identified as important sentinels for the surveillance for zoonotic pathogens. This work investigated Brucella spp., Coxiella burnetii, and Leptospira spp. infection seroprevalence in a free-ranging red deer population. The study was conducted in a fenced reserve with controlled hunting activity in central Spain with animals that did not have any contact with livestock. Sampling was performed at two time points before and 5 years after the implementation of new management measures, including a reduction …

A genome survey sequencing of the Java mouse deer (Tragulus javanicus) adds new aspects to the evolution of lineage specific retrotransposons in Ruminantia (Cetartiodactyla).

Ruminantia, the ruminating, hoofed mammals (cow, deer, giraffe and allies) are an unranked artiodactylan clade. Around 50-60 million years ago the BovB retrotransposon entered the ancestral ruminantian genome through horizontal gene transfer. A survey genome screen using 454-pyrosequencing of the Java mouse deer (Tragulus javanicus) and the lesser kudu (Tragelaphus imberbis) was done to investigate and to compare the landscape of transposable elements within Ruminantia. The family Tragulidae (mouse deer) is the only representative of Tragulina and phylogenetically important, because it represe…

Cervus elaphus sibiricus (deer antler) extract alleviates osteoporosis via dual modulation of osteoblast and osteoclast activity in ovariectomy-induced mice on network pharmacology.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Cervus elaphus sibiricus (deer antler; Cervi Parvum Cornu; Nokyong) refers to the unossified antlers of young male deer and has been traditionally used in East Asian medicine to tonify the kidney and strengthen bone, supporting musculoskeletal health (osteoporosis, age-related frailty). Despite its long-standing use, the pharmacological mechanisms underlying its anti-osteoporotic effects remain largely unelucidated. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to evaluate the anti-osteoporotic effects of a dual-extraction deer antler extract (PKDE) and to elucidate its m…

Eight-year monitoring of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) infection in a herd of farmed sika deer (Cervus nippon) following known pasture contamination.

Paratuberculosis (PTB), a chronic granulomatous enteritis caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), results in considerable economic losses in deer farming globally. Transmission mainly occurs via the faecal-oral route when the environment is contaminated by subclinically infected deer shedding MAP. Field studies on the spread of disease in naturally infected sika deer do not exist. In this short communication, we report on the 8-year close monitoring of a small sika deer herd on year-round grazing to investigate MAP transmission after a subclinically MAP infected stag B33 h…

A historical review of Babesia spp. associated with deer in Europe: Babesia divergens/Babesia divergens-like, Babesia capreoli, Babesia venatorum, Babesia cf. odocoilei.

This review is intended to provide an overview of the occurrence and diversity of Babesia spp. in European deer. Babesiosis is an emerging vector-borne disease with negative implications on animal and public health. Cervidae are important hosts for Ixodidae ticks, playing a critical role in the epidemiology of the parasite. Deer are susceptible to different Babesia spp., some of them with zoonotic potential. The infection is usually asymptomatic with high prevalence rates, although some fatal cases due to B. capreoli and B. venatorum have been reported. In Europe, 3 main Babesia spp. have been…
