Evaluation of RURS elbow guard in the management of thumb-sucking habit in children with and without intellectual disability.

BACKGROUND: Digit sucking is a common oral habit among many children, which involves placing the thumb/finger into the mouth, which can cause malocclusion in mixed and permanent dentition. AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of the RURS elbow guard in the management of thumb-sucking habits in children with intellectual disabilities and those without in terms of the mean duration of appliance therapy. The secondary objective was to compare the RURS elbow guard with an intraoral crib in healthy children (without intellectual disabilities) to manage the habit of thumb-sucking. DESIGN: Children with i

Alveolar Oral Layer Repair by Periosteal Grafts versus Maxillary Flaps and Gingivoperiosteoplasty: Techniques and Follow-up to Adolescence.

BACKGROUND: Alveolar periosteoplasty during primary repair of cleft lip is still a topic of debate due to the fear exacerbating maxillary retrusion. The authors present their experience with early closure of alveolar clefts. The study aims to analyze gingivoperiosteoplasty (GPP) by comparing the use of locoregional flaps versus distant grafts for reconstruction of the lower layer of the primary palate cleft. METHODS: Seventeen infants underwent 22 alveolar cleft repairs. After nasal floor repair by nasal mucoperiosteum, the oral layer was repaired by maxillary or gingival periosteal flaps in

Limited Access to Alveolar Bone Graft Surgery Following Primary Cleft Lip and Palate Repair in Indonesia: A Questionnaire-Based Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Cleft Lip and Palate is the most common craniofacial anomaly, and cleft lip and palate repair is widely performed. Alveolar cleft accompanies 75% of cleft lip cases and requires alveolar bone graft (ABG) surgery at mixed dentition age. However, studies on rates of ABG surgery are scarce. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the low popularity of ABG and orthodontic care among patients with ABG history at Cleft and Craniofacial Centre, Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta. METHOD: A total of 771 patients had orofacial cleft surgeries throughout 2015 to 2021. A descriptive a

Establishing a Novel Treatment Algorithm for Pediatric Mandibular Tumor Reconstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Guidelines for pediatric mandibular reconstruction (PMR) are not well-established. One must consider the growing craniofacial skeleton, mixed dentition, long-term dental occlusion, need for secondary reconstruction, and speech development. The traditional guideline (bone defect > 5 cm) for use of vascularized bone grafts (VBG) is not applicable given the variation of pediatric mandibular size and growth. We seek to propose a novel algorithm for PMR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An Institutional Review Board approved retrospective review of patients who underwent PMR for tumor resectio

Ethnic differences in the root to crown ratios of the permanent dentition.

OBJECTIVE: Root resorption due to orthodontic tooth movement may adversely affect the root-crown (R/C) ratios of permanent teeth, especially in patients with Short Root Anomaly (SRA), a poorly understood disorder affecting root development. Evaluation of SRA R/C ratios to normal dentition would facilitate diagnosis and orthodontic treatment planning. However, reference values are not available for all ethnicities. Our goal was to determine R/C ratios of permanent teeth and their relationship to gender and ethnicity. SETTING/SAMPLE: A retrospective study of 333 patients (109 Caucasians, 112 Af
