BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether the causative factors of non-psychotic postnatal depression are the same as those of depression at other times.
METHOD: The course and recurrence of postnatal depression was studied in two groups of primiparous women experiencing an index episode of postnatal depression: those for whom the mood disorder had arisen de novo (n = 34), and those for whom it was a recurrence of previous affective disturbance (n = 21). The mental state of these two groups, together with a psychiatrically well control group (n = 40), was studied for five years.
RESULTS: It was foun

BACKGROUND: Mental health is an integral part of overall health. Mental health disorders following childbirth are common and poor maternal mental health has consequences for both the mother and her infant. Preeclampsia is also relatively common in pregnancy but there is little known about the intersection between these two important conditions. Gaining a better understanding of the psychological consequences following preeclampsia is important, especially the link with depression, anxiety and posttraumatic stress disorder. If women who experience preeclampsia are recognised as being at increas

Women with a history of major depressive disorder (MDD) have increased risks for postpartum depression, but less is known about postpartum mania in this population. The objectives of this study were to prospectively determine the frequency with which mania occurs in the postpartum among women who have a history of MDD and to explore temporal relationships between onset of mania/hypomania and depression. We administered the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM IV disorders (SCID) to pregnant women with a self-reported history of MDD to confirm diagnosis and exclude women with any history of ma

Objective: Maternal mental health difficulties are common during the perinatal period and have a negative impact on breastfeeding practices. Most research has focused on the role of postpartum depression, whereas maternal anxiety has been less studied, despite its high prevalence. A better understanding of the mental health variables that impact breastfeeding practices is necessary to support maternal and infant health and well-being. The aim of this study is to explore the association between breastfeeding practices and maternal mental health, with an emphasis on maternal anxiety. Materials a

BACKGROUND: Parental attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with increased postpartum depressive symptoms and impaired daily functioning, potentially impacting early maternal-infant attachment (MIA).
METHODS: 78 mothers, half with ADHD, were enrolled during pregnancy or postpartum. Participants completed questionnaires regarding social support, home chaos, postpartum depressive symptoms, and postnatal MIA. Pregnant participants (n = 45) also reported antenatal MIA. ANOVA compared mothers without ADHD (n = 44), mothers with ADHD (n = 21), and mothers with ADHD coparents

Depression during pregnancy and postpartum has impacts on both the birthing parent and offspring. This period is characterized by changes in which stress (e.g., cortisol) and reproductive hormone (e.g., progesterone and estradiol) levels gradually increase across pregnancy and decrease rapidly postpartum, but there are mixed associations of cortisol, progesterone, and estradiol levels with depressive symptoms. Prior studies typically have focused on single hormones across time or multiple hormones at a single time point. The present study aimed to expand the literature by examining patterns of

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Postpartum sleep disorder and mental disorders are common unpleasant conditions faced by women after delivery, and they have many adverse effects on both mothers and infants. It is unclear whether breast milk composition is affected by maternal sleep, psychological state, diet and gut microbiome. This study aims to explore the effects of these key factors on the functional protein components of breast milk.
METHODS: With a prospective design, this pilot study included a total of 41 postpartum women. Breast milk and maternal faecal samples collected at 42 days and 3 months p

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental illness presents a significant health burden to both patients and families. Many factors are hypothesized to increase the incidence of perinatal depression and anxiety in the fetal surgical population, including uncertain fetal prognosis and inherent risks of surgery and preterm delivery.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the incidence and disease course of postpartum depression and anxiety in the fetal surgery population.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective medical record review study was conducted of fetal surgery patients delivering between November 2016 and

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), intimate partner violence (IPV), and maternal depression are prevalent globally. IPV mediates the association between ACEs and depressive symptoms. However, the effects of ACEs and IPV on postpartum depressive symptoms have primarily been examined using cross-sectional designs. This cohort study explored pathways linking ACEs, IPV during pregnancy (p-IPV), and postpartum IPV (IPV-12) with depressive symptoms at 6 and 12 months postpartum. This prospective cohort study recruited 942 pregnant women in their last trimester in Da Nang, Vietnam, and followed th

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: As low folate status has been implicated in depression, high folate intake, in the form of supplements, during pregnancy might offer protection against depression during pregnancy and postpartum.
SUBJECTS/METHODS: We examined the association between change in self-reported depressive symptoms (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale) at different timepoints during and following pregnancy and self-reported folic acid supplementation during pregnancy in a prospective cohort of 6809 pregnant women. We also tested whether there was a main effect of methylenetetrahydrofolate re

BACKGROUND: Women with polycystic ovary syndrome are at a higher risk of cardiometabolic and psychiatric comorbidities and preconception and antepartum complications, but the impact of polycystic ovary syndrome during the postpartum period is unknown.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the risk of postpartum cardiovascular disease complications and perinatal and postpartum depression.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study conducted using a United States insurance claims database. Women with and without polycystic ovary syndrome aged 18 to 50 years enrolled continuously

The persistence of shame-based reactions to child maltreatment (CM) has been associated with poor posttraumatic adjustment. Despite evidence that the postpartum period is a vulnerable time for women with CM histories, little is known about the consequences of maltreatment-specific (MS) shame for postpartum functioning. The current study examined individual differences in MS shame among a sample of women during the postpartum period ( n = 100) as well as prospective relations from MS shame to postpartum psychopathology at 6-, 12-, 15-, and 18-month postpartum. Linear growth curve (LGC) analyses

Despite increasing recognition of the workplace as a key social determinant of health, the role of the workplace in shaping the mental health and well-being of Black mothers has been understudied. The current study examined whether certain occupational stressors and coping resources (i.e., pressure, flexible work arrangements, benefits, supervisor support, and coworker support), predicted levels and changes in African American mothers' depressive symptoms from 6 to 24 months postpartum. Analyses were conducted using data from the Family Life Project, which included 152 full-time employed Afric

BACKGROUND: Peripartum depression (PPD) is a major depression disorder (MDD) episode with onset during pregnancy or within four weeks after childbirth, as defined in DSM-5. However, research suggests that PPD may be a distinct diagnosis. The goal of this study was to summarize the similarities and differences between PPD and MDD by synthesizing the current research on PPD diagnosis concerning different clinical features and give directions for improving diagnosis of PPD in clinical practice.
METHODS: To lay the groundwork for this narrative review, several databases were searched using genera

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) affects 1.2 to 5% of women of reproductive age. Besides significant suffering and social, occupational, and interpersonal impairment, it has been suggested that this syndrome is associated with other affective disorders, in different reproductive phases, such as pregnancy and the postpartum period. However, the literature on this association is scarce and presents great variability in terms of adopted methodology and mixed results. To analyze the relationship between PMDD and other affective disorders, aiming to contribute to the clarification of whether

BACKGROUND: Postpartum psychiatric disorders in women have been discussed more often than postpartum psychiatric disorders in men. However, psychiatric disorders (especially depression) after birth are also experienced by men and may or may not be associated with a postpartum disorder of the mother. The aim of this study is to assess how distressed the partners of women with postpartum psychiatric disorders really are as well as associated factors and the degree of improvement of their emotional well-being after maternal treatment.

PURPOSE: The goal of this study was to understand how the timing, level, and fluctuation of pregnancy stress affected women's postpartum mental health while also considering their experiences of early life stress (adverse childhood events; ACEs). We hypothesized that overall stress level, as well as stress during particular pregnancy weeks, would influence postpartum mental health. We further hypothesized that fluctuations in weekly perceived stress levels across pregnancy would influence postpartum mental health among women who had experienced ≥ 4 ACEs.
METHODS: We collected information on A

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic, inflammatory skin disease associated with considerable burden and mental health symptoms. We sought to determine the association of maternal depression in the postpartum period and maternal and paternal depression in later childhood with AD prevalence and persistence in US children. Data were analyzed from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, a prospective cohort study of 4898 children born in 20 metropolitan US cities. History of postpartum depression was associated with childhood AD overall (multivariable logistic regression; adjusted odds rati

Background: Postpartum body concerns have been consistently associated with greater maternal psychological distress, although the psychological processes associated with this relationship remain insufficiently understood. This study examined whether self-criticism (inadequate self and hated self) and self-reassurance mediate the association between postpartum body concerns and symptoms of depression, anxiety, and stress. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 540 Portuguese mothers of infants aged 2 weeks to 24 months. Participants completed measures of postpartum body concerns, t
