Report of a workshop on ensuring sustainable access to safe blood in developing countries: International Blood Safety Forum, March 24, 2017.

On March 24, 2017, more than 90 experts in blood safety and international development from blood centers, industry, government, and international and nongovernmental organizations gathered in Arlington, Virginia, for the Third International Blood Safety Forum, cosponsored by America's Blood Centers and Global Healing. This report summarizes presentations and major conclusions. The meeting explored ways to increase access to affordable, safe blood for low- and lower-middle-income countries (LMICs) in an era when funding from the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Glo

Guidelines for management of rheumatic diseases in developing countries from basics to real-world situation: relevance, need, and processes for development.

Guidelines or recommendations help to provide uniform standards in medical practice. The development of guidelines requires adherence to pre-defined norms prescribed by different international organizations such as the European League against Rheumatism (EULAR). We searched Pubmed and LILACS to identify published papers in five major rheumatic diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, spondyloarthropathies, osteoarthritis, and scleroderma) from different countries based on their economic prosperity and could find a lack of published literature from most economically weaker

Challenges and opportunities for effective adoption of HRH information systems in developing countries: national rollout of HRHIS and TIIS in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: The establishment of a functional information system for human resource for health (HRH) was one of the major challenges for the Tanzanian health sector. In 2008, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare developed the HRH Strategic Plan, in which establishment of computerized information systems were one of the strategic objectives. In response to this objective, the Ministry developed two information systems, namely the Human Resource for Health Information System (HRHIS) and the Training Institution Information System (TIIS), to capture information from both the public and priva

Hematopoietic cell transplantation for chronic myeloid leukemia in developing countries: perspectives from Latin America in the post-tyrosine kinase inhibitor era.

Tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) are currently the first line treatment for chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) in countries with high and intermediate-high gross national income. Hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT) in these countries is considered salvage therapy for eligible patients who failed TKI or progress to advanced disease stages. In Latin America, treatment for CML also changed with availability of TKI in the region. However, many challenges remain, as the cost of this class of medication and recommended monitoring is high. CML treatment practices in Latin America demonstrate th

Insertional pain and other IUD insertion-related rare events for breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding women--a decade's experience in developing countries.

The possible effect of breastfeeding on intrauterine device (IUD) insertion events was investigated. Analysis included a total of 6493 women who enrolled in multicenter IUD clinical trials over a ten-year period. Findings indicate that breastfeeding exerts a protective effect on the incidence of moderate to severe insertional pain and reduces the need for cervical dilatation to facilitate insertion. The pain protection effect was most evident in breastfeeding women who were still in lactational amenorrhea. Subjects with amenorrhea, both breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding, had a significantly

Development and analysis of a low-cost screening tool to identify and classify hearing loss in children: a proposal for developing countries.

OBJECTIVE: A lack of attention has been given to hearing health in primary care in developing countries. A strategy involving low-cost screening tools may fill the current gap in hearing health care provided to children. Therefore, it is necessary to establish and adopt lower-cost procedures that are accessible to underserved areas that lack other physical or human resources that would enable the identification of groups at risk for hearing loss. The aim of this study was to develop and analyze the efficacy of a low-cost screening tool to identify and classify hearing loss in children. METHOD…

Transfer of occupational health problems from a developed to a developing country: lessons from the Japan-South Korea experience.

Many corporations move their manufacturing facilities or technologies from developed to developing countries. Stringent regulations have made it costly for industries to operate in developed, industrialized countries. In addition, labor costs are high in these countries, and there is increasing awareness among the general public of the health risks associated with industry. The relocation of hazardous industries to developing countries is driven by economic considerations: high unemployment, a cheaper labor force, lack of regulation, and poor enforcement of any existing regulations make certai…

Factors affecting carbon dioxide emissions for sustainable development goals - New insights into six asian developed countries.

The worldwide economic scene faces the dual challenges of rising sea levels and escalating carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Environmental contamination impedes sustainable growth, increasing the demand for sustainable energy resources as a fundamental aspect of sustainable economies. The present research uses an analytical model to examine the elements influencing carbon dioxide output in six economically developed Asian nations, intending to assist in realizing the UNSDG- United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. The manuscript applies the fixed effect model- FEM and the random effects ap

Development of clinical decision rules for traumatic intracranial injuries in patients with mild traumatic brain injury in a developing country.

BACKGROUND: The majority of clinical decision rules for prediction of intracranial injury in patients with mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) were developed from high-income countries. The application of these rules in low or middle-income countries, where the primary mechanism of injury was traffic accidents, is questionable. METHODS: We developed two practical decision rules from a secondary analysis of a multicenter, prospective cohort of 1,164 patients with mild TBI who visited the emergency departments from 2013 to 2016. The clinical endpoints were the presence of any intracranial injury

Development of a lower limb arthroplasty service in a developing country : Lessons learned after the first 100 cases (joints).

There is emerging evidence that total hip arthroplasty (THR) can be safely practiced in developing countries but scant evidence of safety of total knee replacement (TKR). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the outcomes of these procedures focusing on procedure related complications. This is a retrospective study of the first 100 arthroplasties (92 patients) consisting of 58 TKR and 42 THR with a minimum follow-up of 26 months (range of 26 to 47 months). Major complications included deep infection in one TKR and dislocation of one THR and one TKR. Two patients died in the second post-oper…

Neonatal inpatient dataset for small and sick newborn care in low- and middle-income countries: systematic development and multi-country operationalisation with NEST360.

BACKGROUND: Every Newborn Action Plan (ENAP) coverage target 4 necessitates national scale-up of Level-2 Small and Sick Newborn Care (SSNC) (with Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)) in 80% of districts by 2025. Routine neonatal inpatient data is important for improving quality of care, targeting equity gaps, and enabling data-driven decision-making at individual, district, and national-levels. Existing neonatal inpatient datasets vary in purpose, size, definitions, and collection processes. We describe the co-design and operationalisation of a core inpatient dataset for use to track ou

Beyond development: Global disparities in gastrointestinal cancer outcomes across 176 countries.

BACKGROUND: Mortality-to-incidence ratio (MIR) - defined as the age-standardized mortality rate divided by the age-standardized incidence rate - has been proposed as an ecological proxy for cancer treatment access at the population level. We characterized MIR for four gastrointestinal (GI) cancers across 176 countries and quantified the Surgical Access Gap (SAG), defined as the residual between observed and human development index (HDI)-adjusted expected MIR. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional ecological analysis using GLOBOCAN 2022 data for colorectal, gastric, esophageal, and pancreati
