MRI of a middle ear cholesteatoma in a cat.

A 9-year-old Maine coon cat presented with right-sided Horner and facial nerve paralysis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a heterogeneously contrast-enhancing mass occupying the right dorsolateral compartment of the tympanic cavity and extending into the ventromedial compartment, which was expanded and fluid filled. A ventral bulla osteotomy was performed to debulk the soft tissue mass. Histopathology revealed a cholesteatoma. The cat showed slow improvement of clinical signs and was euthanized eleven months postoperatively for unrelated causes. The MRI characteristics of middle ear ch…

Radiological evaluation of the postsurgical middle ear.

OBJECTIVE: The radiological evaluation of the postsurgical middle ear is complex due to the intricate anatomy of this region and the wide variety of procedures and materials used iin middle ear surgery. Knowledge of these factors will enable normal postsurgical changes to be differentiated from complications. This article describes the most common surgical procedures in the middle ear, their indications, and the normal radiological appearance after these procedures. It reviews the most common causes of failure in stapes surgery, in surgery for chronic otitis media, and in surgery for cholestea…

[Neoplasms of the upper respiratory tract and ear].

Neoplasms of the upper respiratory tract and ear are tumors of visual localization; however, patients often go to specialized medical institutions in the presence of a widespread tumor process. This paper presents a brief overview of the most common benign and malignant tumors with localization in the oropharynx, nasopharynx, larynx and ear. The clinical picture, diagnosis and various treatment options are presented. Attention is paid to early diagnosis and the need for timely consultation with an oncologist and doctors of related specialties.

Epidermoid Cyst of the Ear Lobule in Adult.

An epidermoid cyst is one of the most common benign cysts of the skin. The cyst is filled with keratin flakes and its wall is composed of keratinized, stratified, squamous epithelium. Epidermoid cysts can occur anywhere on the body, usually along the lines of embryonic fusion and mostly on the face, scalp, neck, chest, and upper back. Around 80% of the epidermoid cysts are seen in ovaries and testicles whereas, in the head and neck, they account for only about 7% and 1.6% of epidermoid cysts are reported in the oral cavity. The condition can be congenital or acquired. Congenital causes are rar

Invasive histiocytoma in the ear canal of a dog.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous histiocytomas (CH) are derived from epidermal Langerhans cells. Single CH are generally associated with a good prognosis in dogs because most undergo spontaneous remission. However, aggressive behaviour and lymph node metastasis have been reported in a small number of dogs with single CH. OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical presentation, treatment and disease progression of an aggressive CH located in the ear canal of a dog. ANIMAL: An 8-year-old intact male Rottweiler dog. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A unilateral ear canal mass was identified as a CH on routine haematoxyli…

[Spectroscopic investigation of the middle ear mucosa].

BACKGROUND: The middle ear mucosa (MEM) plays a central role in the middle ear due to its function of providing regular ventilation. To date, assessment of the state of the MEM is only possible subjectively by the surgeon. An objective characterization of the state of the MEM is desirable. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to enable objective characterization of the MEM and test infrared (IR) spectroscopy as a possible diagnostic tool for clinical use. MATERIALS AND METHODS: During middle ear surgery, 48 MEM samples were collected and divided into four groups according to clinical appeara…

An evolutionary approach to middle-ear prostheses.

The erroneous idea that mammalian three-ossicle middle ears are superior to single-ossicle ones has influenced thinking about prostheses. Evolutionary facts and measurements indicate that single-ossicle ears are equivalent and more flexible, supporting - in spite of new technological reconstruction techniques - their continued use as prostheses.

The History of Alloplastic Ear Reconstruction for Microtia.

Microtia reconstruction is a unique and challenging field in reconstructive surgery. In the early 20th century, many different alloplastic materials have been used in an attempt to recreate the fibrocartilaginous framework of the native ear. These materials include celluloid, tantalum wire cage, nylon mesh, polyethylene, and acrylic. The first standard for alloplastic microtia reconstruction, silicone, is one fraught with complications and failures. This alloplastic material is walled off by the host and prone to scar tissue formation and extrusion. Alloplastic microtia reconstruction largely …

Tsukushi is essential for the development of the inner ear.

Tsukushi (TSK)-a small, secreted, leucine-rich-repeat proteoglycan-interacts with and regulates essential cellular signaling cascades. However, its functions in the mouse inner ear are unknown. In this study, measurement of auditory brainstem responses, fluorescence microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy revealed that TSK deficiency in mice resulted in the formation of abnormal stereocilia in the inner hair cells and hearing loss but not in the loss of these cells. TSK accumulated in nonprosensory regions during early embryonic stages and in both nonprosensory and prosensory regions in l…

Evolution of the Mammalian Ear: An Evolvability Hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: Neisseria meningitidis remains the main cause of sporadic meningitis and sepsis in military camps in Vietnam. Yet, very limited molecular data of their genotypic and epidemiological characteristics are available from Vietnam, and particularly the military environment. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) has proven useful for meningococcal disease surveillance and guiding preventative vaccination programs. Previously, we characterized key genetic and epidemiological features of an invasive N. meningitidis B isolate from a military unit in Vietnam. Here, we extend these findings by sequenc

Ambiguous skin ulcer on the ear pinna.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a parasitic disease which has a biphasic life cycle; infection by promastigotes from the sandfly reaches a wound where it is phagocytosed by macrophages, producing the amastigote (the Leishmania donovani body) in the host. A protozoan parasite transmitted by the phlebotomous sandfly causes human leishmaniasis. Cutaneous forms include classical cutaneous, mucocutaneous and post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis. It affects c. 300 million individuals in more than 90 nations around the globe. The cutaneous form in the Old World is caused at low altitudes mainly by L.

Expression of aquaporins in inner ear disease.

The inner ear is responsible for hearing and balance and consists of a membranous labyrinth within a bony labyrinth. The balance structure is divided into the otolith organ that recognizes linear acceleration and the semicircular canal that is responsible for rotational movement. The cochlea is the hearing organ. The external and middle ear are covered with skin and mucosa, respectively, and the space is filled with air, whereas the inner ear is composed of endolymph and perilymph. The inner ear is a fluid-filled sensory organ composed of hair cells with cilia on the upper part of the cells th…

Not 'just' a foreign body in the ear canal.

Foreign bodies are commonly seen by the Ear, Nose and Throat emergency team with cotton wool being the most common aural foreign body seen in the adult population. Most complications secondary to aural foreign bodies described in the literature are minor and rarely require any surgical intervention. Here, we present two cases with impacted cotton wool as aural foreign bodies which resulted in suppurative labyrinthitis and osteomyelitis causing profound sensorineural hearing. These cases highlight the importance of considering aural foreign bodies in the differential diagnosis in those presenti…
