A case of partial duplication of vas deferens is reported. The reports relevant to this malformation are reviewed and the embryologic etiology is discussed.

This case report presents a rare incidence of a persistent Eustachian valve (EV) causing notable venous dilation in the abdominal and pelvic regions of a 44-year-old healthy male. Initially presenting with left flank pain, diagnostic evaluations identified a 4.8-mm calculus in the distal left ureterovesical junction. Incidentally, imaging also revealed unexplained venous distensions, subsequently attributed to a prominent EV obstructing the inferior vena cava (IVC). The EV, an embryological structure in fetal circulation that helps divert blood from the IVC to the left atrium via the foramen o

Renal ectopia also known as ectopic kidney is an embryological renal anomaly characterised by abnormal anatomical location of one or both of the kidneys. This can occur in various forms such as (1) crossed fused renal ectopia, (2) ectopic thoracic kidney and (3) pelvic kidneys. The lump kidney is one of the six variations of crossed fused ectopic kidney. Throughout life, the patient may remain asymptomatic, however, symptomatic patients may present with minor traumatic injuries due to the abnormal location or normal kidney pathologies. During normal embryological development, there is cephalic

Johann Friedrich Meckel (1781-1833) was a 19th century anatomist born into an eminent dynasty. He was a professor of anatomy, pathology, and zoology at the University of Halle, in Central Germany. The diverticulum, a congenital remnant of the vitellointestinal duct was named after him. Other eponyms include Meckel's cartilage, Meckel syndrome, and Meckel-Serres law of recapitulation. His concepts in comparative anatomy, embryology, and teratology anticipated Darwin. This review is a short tribute to this legend and his prolific contributions. LEVEL: Historic review, level V.

Although the most common form of the persistent left superior vena cava anomaly is usually clinically silent and often discovered incidentally, the risk of developing cyanosis, heart failure, and embolic cerebrovascular events is high among cases where the anomaly causes a right to left shunt. A rare case of persistent left superior vena cava draining into the left atrium through the superior left pulmonary vein is presented with a discussion of the embryology, morphologic forms, and clinical significance of the persistent left superior vena cava.

The optic chiasm is formed when the optic nerves come together in order to allow for the crossing of fibers from the nasal retina to the optic tract on the other side. This enables vision from one side of both the eyes to be appreciated by the occipital cortex of the opposite side. This review makes note of the embryology, anatomy and vascular supply of the optic chiasm, then discusses the clinical syndromes associated with chiasmal disease, and the diseases which commonly influence its function.

The embryology, epidemiology, associated anomalies, prenatal course and the neonatal and surgical care of newborns with gastroschisis and omphalocele are reviewed. For gastroschisis temporary intestinal coverage is often done before a more definitive operative closure that may be immediate or delayed. Outcomes in gastroschisis are determined by associated bowel injury. For omphalocele small defects are closed primarily while large defects are treated topically to allow initial skin coverage before a later definitive closure. Outcomes for omphalocele are determined mainly by the presence of ass…

The majority of neck masses in the pediatric population are congenital or inflammatory in origin requiring a thorough understanding of embryology and anatomy of the cervical region. However, malignancy must always be ruled out as they represent 11%-15% of all neck masses in the pediatric population. The initial history and physical are of utmost important to correctly work-up and eventually diagnose the lesion. This article addresses many aspects of the workup, diagnosis and eventual proper surgical or medical management of pediatric neck masses.

Sonography is the imaging modality of choice for the scrotum because it is simple, relatively inexpensive, and quick. Recent technological advances and transducer improvements have led to exquisite high-resolution detail in gray-scale as well as Doppler imaging. The purposes of this pictorial essay are to review the anatomy and embryology of the scrotal contents and to review the various scrotal and extrascrotal pathologic conditions, including acute scrotum, pediatric and adult testicular and extratesticular scrotal neoplasms, traumatic lesions, and miscellaneous other scrotal lesions.

Previous studies on morphology and embryology revealed that the Hatschek's pit, endostyle and hepatic caecum in amphioxus were homologous to the precursors of pituitary, thyroid and liver in vertebrates, respectively. Here, we summarize the recent advances on the relationship between amphioxus hepatic caecum and the vertebrate liver as well as the origin of growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor (GH/IGF) and thyroid hormone/thyroid hormone receptor (TH/THR) signal pathways, which will provide molecular support to the homology of amphioxus hepatic caecum to vertebrate liver.

Defects of development of the neural tube can result in a number of seemingly different malformations. Understanding the abnormal embryology helps one understand the malformations and their surgical treatments. The clinical presentations and the follow-up of these patients require attention to various end organs besides the nervous system. For most of these conditions, long-term follow-up is necessary regardless of initial treatment. A decline in function is not a part of the natural history of these malformations and requires prompt evaluation and treatment.

Despite the fact that hypospadias is one of the most common congenital abnormalities of the genitalia, it is often missed on prenatal sonograms. In this paper, sonographic findings of six fetuses who were prospectively suspected to have hypospadias are presented. Of the six patients, isolated hypospadias was found in three, hypospadias with chordee in two, and isolated chordee in one. Additional malformations were present in four of the six fetuses. Sonographic findings of fetal hypospadias are described, and the embryology, anatomy, and associated abnormalities are discussed.

A two-month-old girl with aniridia was found to have an optic pit in one eye and the morning glory disc anomaly in the other eye. The patient's mother had corectopia and atypical iris defects. The findings are described and the embryology of the various abnormalities briefly reviewed. This is the first report of such an association of findings in a family with aniridia. Failure of normal neuroectodermal development may play a role in the development of optic pits and the morning glory disc anomaly.

A case of triplication of the gallbladder is presented. This is the ninth case to be reported in the world literature. The triple gallbladder with a common cystic duct was found on single dose oral cholecystogram during the gastrointestinal evaluation of a man with hematemesis. No surgery was performed due to the absence of biliary tract symptoms and absence of pathology on roentgenograms. The embryology, anatomy, pathology, and clinical significance of vesica fellea triplex are discussed and the previous eight case reports are reviewed.

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) was introduced in 1992 as a method to treat couples with severe male infertility. However, in the last two decades, the use of ICSI has increased substantially even among patients without male factor infertility. In ICSI the oocytes are scrutinized for maturity upon insemination and the immature oocytes are discarded. The aim of the present study was to assess the ability of an experienced embryologist to identify the maturity of the oocytes prior to their denudation. In the present prospective observational study, four experienced embryologists examined

Background-Bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) disease is the most prevalent congenital heart disease in the world. Knowledge about its subtypes ori … s regarding coronary ostia. Sievers' classification is the reference. The phenotypic description of embryology revealed that all subtypes of BAV are the results of different embryological pathogenesis, and therefore, should be considered as distinct conditions. Their common development towards aortic dilatation is explained by the aortic media's pathological …
