Imaging assessment of gunshot wounds.

Gunshot injuries occur when someone is shot by a bullet or other sort of projectile from a firearm. Wounds are generally classified as low velocity (less than 609.6m/s) or high velocity (more than 609.6m/s). Those with higher velocity may be expected, on this basis, to dissipate more energy into surrounding tissue as they are slow and cause more tissue damage, but this is only a very approximate guide. However, these terms can be misleading; more important than velocity is the efficiency of energy transfer, which is dependent on the physical characteristics of the projectile, as well as the ki…

[The New Idea about Early Intervention for Type 2 Diabetes Based on Gan Disease Transferring to Pi in Metabolic Diseases].

Excess energy has become a main reason for increasingly serious human health hazards. Excess energy, mainly ectopically deposits in the liver, pancreas and other organs in the form of triglycerides, and produces chronic oxidative, nitrosative stress (ONS) , and fat toxicity, resulting in insulin resistance and impaired insulin secretion, and further impaired glucose regulation (Pidan). By combining Chinese medical pathogeneses and symptoms analyses, authors found this process has features of Gan disease transferring to Pi. Based on a number of related guidelines and clinical practice, we demon

Probing One-Electron Transfer in Selected Trace Elements.

Electron transfer is a key process in many biological redox reactions like photosynthesis, respiration and peroxidases. Several of these processes are mediated by trace elements like transition metals and chalcogens. Although the overall redox reaction often involves the transfer of multiple electrons, it may happen in several steps of single electron transfer processes. Understanding and probing such one-electron processes is necessary to optimize the energy channeling in the mimetic redox biology. However, monitoring such reactions requires advanced spectroscopic tools. In transition metals,

Assessing the performance of motorcyclists' impact protectors in simulated ATD knee and shoulder impacts.

OBJECTIVE: Fractures are a common injury among motorcycle riders and can have serious health implications. Impact protection (IP) has been designed to help prevent fractures, yet there are conflicting opinions as to whether this IP does in fact help prevent fractures in real-world crashes. This work aimed to (1) use simulated dummy impacts to examine whether existing types of IP could reduce the force transferred to the underlying bone to below fracture tolerance levels and (2) investigate whether current European Standard (EN 1621-1) test procedures for impact protectors designed for motorcyc

Free mitochondrial transfer enhances bone regeneration through cathepsin H mediated cysteine cycle.

BACKGROUND: Mitochondria, as crucial organelles in eukaryotic cells, are deeply involved in cellular energy metabolism and biogenesis. Currently, mitochondria have been found to transfer between cells and regulate a range of cellular functions and research has found that mitochondrial transfer has been shown to play an important role in regulating bone homeostasis. METHODS: Laser confocal imaging was used to confirm the occurrence of mitochondrial transfer between cells. JC-1 staining explains the state of free mitochondria in receptor cells. In order to reveal the relationship between the st

An electron transfer dependent membrane potential in chromaffin-vesicle ghosts.

Adrenal medullary chromaffin-vesicle membranes contain a transmembrane electron carrier that may provide reducing equivalents for intravesicular dopamine beta-hydroxylase in vivo. This electron transfer system can generate a membrane potential (inside positive) across resealed chromaffin-vesicle membranes (ghosts) by passing electrons from an internal electron donor to an external electron acceptor. Both ascorbic acid and isoascorbic acid are suitable electron donors. As an electron acceptor, ferricyanide elicits a transient increase in membrane potential at physiological temperatures. A stabl

Self-assembled FeS-Clostridium ljungdahlii biohybrid boost chemicals production in microbial electrosynthesis.

The low extracellular electron transfer rate ofClostridium ljungdahliilimits its capacity to acquire reducing power from the electrode for CO2 reduction and chemical synthesis. Herein, we employ a biologically self-assembled FeS construct to accelerate electron transfer forC. ljungdahlii, which enhances CO2-to-chemical conversion in microbial electrosynthesis (MES). The synthesized FeS nanoparticles werelocalized tothe cell surface and intracellular space ofC. ljungdahlii, thereby establishing a contiguous, bio-derived conductive network across the cellular boundary. Solvent polarity and chalcogen electronegativity synergistically regulate excited-state proton transfer in BBYPD derivatives.

This study aims to investigate the regulatory behaviors of solvent polarity and chalcogen electronegativity on excited-state proton transfer process of BBYPD derivatives, filling the theoretical gaps related to proton transfer pathways and regulatory rules of double hydrogen bond systems in similar studies. The study used DFT and TDDFT methods for systematic calculations, selected three solvents with different polarities (hexane, benzene, acetonitrile), and constructed two types of BBYPD derivative systems: symmetrically substituted (BBYPD-SS, BBYPD-SeSe) and asymmetrically substituted (BBYPD-

Rate of iron transfer through the horse spleen ferritin shell determined by the rate of formation of Prussian Blue and Fe-desferrioxamine within the ferritin cavity.

Iron (2+ and 3+) is believed to transfer through the three-fold channels in the ferritin shell during iron deposition and release in animal ferritins. However, the rate of iron transit in and out through these channels has not been reported. The recent synthesis of [Fe(CN)6]3-, Prussian Blue (PB) and desferrioxamine (DES) all trapped within the horse spleen ferritin (HoSF) interior makes these measurements feasible. We report the rate of Fe2+ penetrating into the ferritin interior by adding external Fe2+ to [Fe(CN)6]3- encapsulated in the HoSF interior and measuring the rate of formation of th

Enhancing Electrochemiluminescence with Two-Component Spontaneously Adsorbed Monolayers and Films.

Multicomponent films offer important opportunities in electrochemiluminescence, ECL, including the possibility to coimmobilize an electron transfer mediator to facilitate the generation of radicals from a coreactant and to enhance indirect ECL at potentials that are lower than the direct route. Moreover, the local microenvironment, as well as energy and electron transfer pathways, can be controlled which have important implications for improving ECL assays and sensors. Here, spontaneously adsorbed monolayers and thin films of [Ru-(bpy)2(Qbpy)]2+, RuN6, and [Ru-(bpy)2(Qbpy)-Cl]+, RuN5Cl, have b

Engineering dual-mode pure green emission in cerium oxide-based phosphors for optical thermometry applications.

In this work, selective enhancements in green upconversion (UC) and downconversion (DC) emissions are achieved in Ho3+/Yb3+/Mo6+ tri-doped C … ed enhanced green emissions without obvious concentration quenching, which can be attributed to the energy transfer from the charge-transfer band (O2--Mo6+) to Ho3+. In contrast, the Mo-doped UC samples exhibited an optimal emission intensity at 3 mol%, which is approximately three times higher than that of the undoped sample. This enhancement is associated with …

Atomically engineered Fe/Mn catalysts enable ultrafast self-sustaining water purification via oxidant-free Fenton-like electron-transfer reaction.

Green Fenton-like reactions based on monometallic single-atom dual-reaction-center systems have emerged as promising strategies for sustainable water purification owing to their oxidant-free operation and low energy demand. However, their practical deployment is often hindered by limited degradation kinetics and unresolved mechanisms. Here, we report a carbon nitride-supported Fe/Mn bimetallic catalyst composed of Fe nanoclusters and adjacent Mn single atoms (FeMn-CN) that enables ultrafast and self-sustaining pollutant degradation under oxidant-free conditions. The catalyst achieves 99.5 % re

Fluorination Anodization of n‑Type Silicon in the Dark via Schottky-Driven Electron Extraction.

The band structure of semiconductors governs electron exchange, rendering interfacial electron transfer both controllable and intrinsically time-integrated. Because electron transfer affects the formation and rupture of interatomic bonds, it constitutes the main driving force of chemical and electrochemical reactions. Fluorination anodization of n-type silicon in the dark is traditionally considered impossible because of the scarcity of the required speciesholes. Here, we report that sufficiently sustained bias induces fluorination anodization of n-type silicon in complete darkness under stan

Electron transfer within complex II. Succinate:ubiquinone oxidoreductase of Escherichia coli.

Electron transfer within Escherichia coli succinate:ubiquinone oxidoreductase has been examined by the pulse radiolysis technique using spectrophotometric detection. Electrons have been introduced into the protein by the bimolecular reaction with quantified concentrations of the low potential N-methylnicotinamide radical at a rate constant of 7 x 10(8) M(-1) s(-1). Two redox-active centers in the protein are initially reduced, assigned as the high potential [3Fe-4S] center and the bound ubiquinone, followed by intramolecular equilibration with the b heme in both cases. Electron equilibration a

The study of post-irradiation recovery of yeast: the 'premolecular period'.

Recovery of yeast cells after exposure to ionizing radiation was discovered in 1957. During the following decade, i.e., in the 'premolecular period' of studying this phenomenon, its basic features including dependence on cell ploidy, cellular energy exchange and radiation linear energy transfer (LET) were determined and a mathematical model of recovery was proposed. In addition, DNA double-strand breaks were shown to be the damage causing death of irradiated haploid and diploid cells. The results of these investigations led to the formulation of the concept that the ability of a cell to repair…

Electrochemical Charge Transfer Kinetics of Ferrocene in the Light of Different Working Electrodes.

Ferrocene is an accidentally discovered organometallic compound that serves as a crucial redox probe in investigating electrochemical charge transfer dynamics. Besides solution phase studies, ferrocene derivatives are well-explored in molecular thin films, including self-assembled monolayers on various electrodes for understanding on-surface redox behavior, molecular electronics, and charge storage applications. Heterogeneous charge transfer is an imperative parameter for efficient charge transport in spin-dependent electrochemistry, photoelectrochemistry, and molecular electronic devices. In

Polarity effects on the photophysics of dendrimers with an oligophenylenevinylene core and peripheral fullerene units.

Highly soluble dendritic branches with fullerene subunits at the periphery and a carboxylic acid function at the focal point have been prepared by a convergent approach. They have been attached to an oligophenylenevinylene (OPV) core bearing two alcohol functions to yield dendrimers with two, four or eight peripheral C60 groups. Their photophysical properties have been systematically investigated in solvents of increasing polarity; that is, toluene, dichloromethane, and benzonitrile. Ultrafast OPV-->C60 singlet energy transfer takes place for the whole series of dendrimers, whatever the solven…
