Current approaches used in epidemiologic studies to examine short-term multipollutant air pollution exposures.

PURPOSE: Air pollution epidemiology traditionally focuses on the relationship between individual air pollutants and health outcomes (e.g., mortality). To account for potential copollutant confounding, individual pollutant associations are often estimated by adjusting or controlling for other pollutants in the mixture. Recently, the need to characterize the relationship between health outcomes and the larger multipollutant mixture has been emphasized in an attempt to better protect public health and inform more sustainable air quality management decisions. METHODS: New and innovative statistic

[Epidemiologic profile of children with burns from the Civil Hospital of Guadalajara "Dr. Juan I. Menchaca", 2009-2011].

BACKGROUND: Burns are a public health problem, ranking among the 20 principal causes of morbidity in Mexico. Children are a more vulnerable group to suffer from these injuries. For that reason, we analyzed cases in order to gain a better comprehension and to propose preventive measures for this problem. The aim of the study was to determine the epidemiological profile of those injuries to allow us to plan and implement actions for burn prevention. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study that included demographic characteristics of the child, the parents and the burn injuries from childr

Epidemiology of systemic mastocytosis in Denmark.

Mastocytosis is a heterogeneous group of diseases characterized by abnormal proliferation of mast cells. Systemic mastocytosis (SM), in which abnormal mast cells are present in tissues beyond the skin, is divided into seven subcategories with varying degrees of severity and prognosis. Very little is known about the epidemiology of SM and its subcategories. This retrospective cohort study of 548 adults with SM diagnosed 1997-2010 was constructed using linked Danish national health registries. The most common subtype of mastocytosis was indolent SM (including urticaria pigmentosa) (n = 450; 82%)

Prevalence based epidemiological cancer statistics: a brief assessment from different populations in India.

Modern civilization, urbanization, industrialization, changes in daily life, population growth and ageing all have contributed to epidemiological changes in many diseases, including cancer, in India and other countries. Tobacco has been identified as the most important cause of cancer followed by alcohol consumption, dietary practices, inadequate physical activity, infections due to viruses and sexual behavior. The total number of new cancer cases is increasing rapidly, due to growth in size of the population, and an increase in the proportion of elderly persons, as a result of improved life e

[Epidemiology of meningococcal infection in Georgia].

Epidemiology of meningococcal infection in Georgia was studied for 2009-2011. As the official surveillance data shows, morbidity with the infection is characterized by a downward trend. During the analyzed period the morbidity level declined by 2,4 times. The average incidence rate for the period composed 0,95 ± 0,12 per 100 000 population. The infection is unequally spread throughout the country. High incidence is indicated in Tbilisi city and the regions: Ajara and Kvemo Kartli. Children are the most vulnerable population. 81,3% of all the cases fell on the children' population. High inciden

Self-immolation: socioeconomic, cultural and psychiatric patterns.

INTRODUCTION: Self-immolation remains a significant contemporary problem. Its epidemiology and causes, and the intervention strategies these suggest vary significantly between higher- and lower-income countries. We summarize what is known about suicide by self-immolation in terms of its demographic and psychiatric risk factors, causes, local patterns and means employed, and points of possible intervention. METHODS: We reviewed the literature for all published papers on self-immolation between 1973 and 2010. Epidemiologic and psychiatric risk factors and aspects of method, locale and timing of

The enduring effects of abuse and related adverse experiences in childhood. A convergence of evidence from neurobiology and epidemiology.

BACKGROUND: Childhood maltreatment has been linked to a variety of changes in brain structure and function and stress-responsive neurobiological systems. Epidemiological studies have documented the impact of childhood maltreatment on health and emotional well-being. METHODS: After a brief review of the neurobiology of childhood trauma, we use the Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE) Study as an epidemiological "case example" of the convergence between epidemiologic and neurobiological evidence of the effects of childhood trauma. The ACE Study included 17,337 adult HMO members and assessed 8 ad

[Levels of malaria transmission: methods and parameters].

Evaluation of malaria transmission levels is necessary to compare ecologically diverse areas and to assess the effectiveness of efforts to control the disease. The purpose of this report is to describe useful techniques for descriptive epidemiology and potentially pertinent indicators regarding the three links in the epidemiological chain: transmission from mosquito to man, transmission from man to mosquito, and sporogonic cycle. Standards for evaluation of transmission from mosquito to man are now well established. Techniques and resulting data, mostly entomological, have been validated in nu

Exercise and gall bladder function.

Epidemiological research has demonstrated protective effects of varying strength from physical activity against the risk for several chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease, hypertension, non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and osteoporosis. Epidemiological studies have been supported by experimental research showing that exercise training improves coronary heart disease risk factors and other health-related factors. In contrast, the association between physical activity, exercise and gall stone disease has not yet been firmly established. This paper presents the theoretical role o

Radiofrequency exposure near high-voltage lines.

Many epidemiologic studies suggest a relationship between incidence of diseases like cancer and leukemia and exposure to 50/60 Hz magnetic fields. Some studies suggest a relationship between leukemia incidence in populations residing near high-voltage lines and the distance to these lines. Other epidemiologic studies suggest a relationship between leukemia incidence and exposure to 50/60 Hz magnetic fields (measured or estimated) and distance from the main system (220 or 120 V). The present work does not question these results but is intended to draw attention to a possible concurrent cause th

Novel agents of viral enteritis in humans.

Considerable information has recently emerged regarding certain "groups" of novel viruses associated with gastroenteritis in humans. The viruses reviewed here are 20-35 nm in diameter and can be detected in the stools of acutely ill individuals with gastroenteritis. These viruses can be conveniently divided into four "groups": Norwalk-like agents, caliciviruses, astroviruses, and other small round viruses. The evidence for the etiologic association of these agents with gastroenteritis varies from agent to agent but is most extensive for the Norwalk-like agents, of which the Norwalk serotype is

Intravenous bisphosphonate therapy and bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws.

The purposes of this report are to 1) summarize the epidemiologic evidence supporting an association between intravenous bisphosphonate (BP) exposure and BP-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ), 2) identify measurable risk factors associated with BRONJ, and 3) assess the risk of BRONJ for patients receiving intravenous BPs to manage osteoporosis. The results of this review suggest a compelling, circumstantial association between intravenous BP exposure and BRONJ. The factors consistently associated with an increased risk of BRONJ included intravenous BP exposure in the setting of malignan

Hair as a biomarker for exposure to tobacco smoke.

This article provides an overview of the hair nicotine biomarker for assessment of exposure to tobacco smoke, with emphasis on environmental tobacco smoke (ETS). Measurement of nicotine in hair can be an informative tool for research looking at ETS and related illnesses. There are still unresolved issues in relation to this biomarker such as influence of hair treatment, hair colour, and growth rate on nicotine levels in hair, which need to be addressed in order to further refine this biomarker for exposure assessment. Nevertheless, hair nicotine promises to be a valid and reliable measure of l

Tailoring Biosecurity Advice in Dairy Cattle Farms: Decision Analysis to Estimate the Most Cost-Effective Option.

The implementation of biosecurity measures on dairy farms is influenced by multiple factors, including farmers' experience, perception of disease risk, social influences, and epidemiological and economic factors. The aim of this study was to identify the biosecurity option providing the highest economic return for dairy farms. To achieve this, a biosecurity cost calculator was developed using a database of prices associated with the different components required to implement each biosecurity measure. The probability of pathogen introduction was estimated through a quantitative risk assessment

Using wastewater-based epidemiology to evaluate the relative scale of use of opioids.

Wastewater analysis (WWA) has been used as a tool to monitor population drug use, both pharmaceutical and illicit, for over 15 years. Policymakers, law enforcement and treatment services may use WWA-derived data to seek an objective understanding of the extent of drug use in specific areas. Therefore, wastewater data should best be reported in a meaningful form to allow those that are not experts in the field to compare the scale within and between drug classes. Excreted drug loads quantified in wastewater describe the mass of drug present in the sewer. Normalisation for wastewater flow and po

Reliability of fasting plasma alkylresorcinol concentrations measured 4 months apart.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Alkylresorcinols (ARs) have been suggested as specific dietary biomarkers of whole-grain intake. Evaluation of long-term reliability in repeatedly collected samples in population-based studies is needed to assess whether plasma AR reflect long-term exposure and may be used to study exposure-disease relationships in large-scale epidemiologic studies. The objective of this study was to analyze the reliability (reproducibility) of AR concentrations in fasting plasma measured 4 months apart. SUBJECTS/METHODS: AR concentrations (C17:0, C19:0, C21:0, C23:0 and C25:0 and total
