Routinely collected electronic health records (EHRs) data contain a vast amount of valuable information for conducting epidemiological studies. With the right tools, we can gain insights into disease processes and development, identify the best treatment and develop accurate models for predicting outcomes. Our recent systematic review has found that the number of big data studies from Hong Kong has rapidly increased since 2015, with an increasingly common application of artificial intelligence (AI). The advantages of big data are that i) the models developed are highly generalisable to the pop

Geo-statistical models have been applied to assess fine-scale air pollution exposures in epidemiological studies. Many of the models were developed for criteria air pollutants rather than others that have not been regulated (e.g., ultrafine particles, black carbon, and benzene) which may also be harmful to human health. We aim to develop spatial models for regulated and non-regulated air pollutants using 6 algorithms and compare their prediction performances. A mobile platform with fast-response monitors was used to measure gaseous air pollutants (nitrogen dioxides, carbon monoxide, sulfur dio

Until recently, DSM classifications regarding women's sexual dysfunctions were based on definitions that mainly derived from experts opinions, rather than clinical or epidemiological studies. Additionally, this classification was the same for men and women, taking for granted the existence of a single sexual response model for men and women. More specifically, the main models that were described and prevailed were the linear models of Master's & Johnson and Kaplan, as well as the circular model of Rosemary Basson that followed. The differences between linear and circular models have to do main

Animal experimentation in the Parkinson's disease (PD) field is a classic example of how the use of animal models to study diseases can have a significant impact on human health. Among the different neurotoxin-based animal models of PD that are presently available, the 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) and the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) models have been established and validated as useful models for the development of therapeutic strategies aimed to treat motor symptoms and to study alterations of the basal ganglia that occur in this disease. The 6-OHDA rat model and the MPTP

Transmembrane 6 superfamily member 2 (TM6SF2) is located on chromosome 19 (19p12) and encodes for a protein of undetermined function. Genetic studies have reported the association between a nonsynonymous variant in TM6SF2 (E167K, rs58542926) with hepatic triglyceride content and its impact on the cardiovascular system. Clinical and epidemiological studies have confirmed the role of TM6SF2 in the development of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Recently, TM6SF2 was also shown to play an important role in promoting hepatic fibrosis and hepatocellular cancer in mouse models. This review a

Transmission of the carcinogenic liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini is ongoing across Southeast Asia. Endemic countries within the region are in different stages of achieving control. However, evidence on which interventions are the most effective for reducing parasite transmission, and the resulting liver cancer, is currently lacking. Quantitative modelling can be used to evaluate different control measures against O. viverrini and assist the design of clinical trials. In this article we evaluate the epidemiological parameters that underpin models of O. viverrini and the data necessary for th

The transmission of cholera involves both human-to-human and environment-to-human pathways that complicate its dynamics. In this paper, we present a new and unified deterministic model that incorporates a general incidence rate and a general formulation of the pathogen concentration to analyse the dynamics of cholera. Particularly, this work unifies many existing cholera models proposed by different authors. We conduct equilibrium analysis to carefully study the complex epidemic and endemic behaviour of the disease. Our results show that despite the incorporation of the environmental component

The incidence of immune diseases has had a steady significant increase in the industrialized countries since the end of the last century. Epidemiological data suggest that prevention of exposure to helminths may be one of the factors promoting the rise in these diseases. Animal models of immune diseases support this concept by showing that these parasites can prevent and reverse developed diseases. Helminths strongly modulate the host's immune system inducing regulatory immune cells and pathways that afford protection from these illnesses. Helminthic therapy has emerged as a promising treatmen

Clinical observation, as well as epidemiological and research data, suggest that female gonadal hormones influence the course of panic disorder (PD). Panicogenic agents such as pentagastrin are useful tools with which to study the pathophysiology of panic attacks. Nine women with PD were randomly assigned to receive, in a crossover design, a 3-day pretreatment with medroxyprogesterone acetate (MP) prior to an injection of pentagastrin, and a 3-day pretreatment with a placebo prior to another injection of pentagastrin. The panic response and the anxiety response to pentagastrin were decreased a

The strategies against yellow fever developed by Argentina and Brazil were discussed at the Second Medical Congress of Latin America which was held in Buenos Aires in 1904. The study of the controversy between physicians from Argentina and Brazil around the existing explanatory models of this illness and the international prophylactic strategies in use at the time enables an epistemological understanding of the breakthrough brought about by the emergence of medicine of vectors. This chapter of Latin American medicine history constitutes a unique opportunity to analyze that reorganization of kn

Conflicting data from epidemiological trials, genetic family studies, transgenic animal models, and in vitro experiments have created controversy regarding the importance of HDL and apolipoprotein (apo) A-I for reverse cholesterol transport and protection from atherosclerosis. In this study we identified a homozygous nonsense mutation in codon 32 (Q32X) of the apoA-I gene as the molecular basis of apoA-I deficiency in a 31-year-old woman who did not present with clinical signs of atherosclerosis. Despite half-normal plasma concentrations of HDL cholesterol and apoA-I in subjects heterozygous f

Over the past two decades there has been an upsurge of interest in defining morphological, immunological, biochemical, biological and genetic differences between species of Onchocerca to provide solutions to practical problems associated with finding models and epidemiological tools to assist with control of human onchocerciasis. The information gathered has confirmed the close relationship between species of Onchocerca and provided highly sensitive and specific probes to distinguish species and even strains of the same species. It has also identified pathways, especially using sequences from

The analysis of short term relation between daily ambient air pollution and daily number of deaths in Kraków, Poland, during the period 1993-1996 was the purpose of the study. The exposure time series data dealt with sulphur dioxide (SO2) and particles with aero-diameter smaller than 10 microns (PM10). Daily mortality due to all causes and cardiovascular diseases were considered separately for two age groups. The statistical procedures included modelling of potential confounding factors (seasonal patterns, meteorological factors) and in the final analysis the Poisson regression model was appli

Mosquito blood-feeding behavior is a key determinant of the epidemiology of dengue viruses (DENV), the most-prevalent mosquito-borne viruses. However, despite its importance, how DENV infection influences mosquito blood-feeding and, consequently, transmission remains unclear. Here, we developed a high-resolution, video-based assay to observe the blood-feeding behavior of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes on mice. We then applied multivariate analysis on the high-throughput, unbiased data generated from the assay to ordinate behavioral parameters into complex behaviors. We showed that DENV infection inc

BACKGROUND: Social distancing is one of the community mitigation measures that may be recommended during influenza pandemics. Social distancing can reduce virus transmission by increasing physical distance or reducing frequency of congregation in socially dense community settings, such as schools or workplaces. We conducted a systematic review to assess the evidence that social distancing in non-healthcare workplaces reduces or slows influenza transmission.
METHODS: Electronic searches were conducted using MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Cochrane Library, PsycINFO, CINAHL, NIOSHTIC-2, and EconLit to

This study aimed at establishing baseline key epidemiological parameters for varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection in Vojvodina, Serbia, with the ultimate goal to quantify the VZV transmission potential in the population. Seroprevalence data generated during the first large cross-sectional VZV serosurvey were modelled, using a two-tiered modelling approach to calculate age-specific forces of infection (FOI), the basic reproduction number (R0) and herd immunity threshold (H). Seroprevalence and modelling data were compared with corresponding pre-vaccination epidemiological parameters from 11 c

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the contribution of hierarchical mixed models to the analysis of epidemiologic studies of environmental exposure and reproductive outcomes. We have re-analyzed, with a logistic-normal mixed model, four studies investigating the relation between the frequency of spontaneous abortions and paternal or maternal environmental exposures. The data include multiple pregnancies for some women. The fitted models allow for between-woman variation of the propensity for spontaneous abortion, by including a random intercept in the logistic model to adjust for within-woma

A survey of the sexual behaviour of gonorrhoea patients in Newark was undertaken to evaluate parameters within a model of gonorrhoea transmission. Modelling work aimed to explain observed epidemiological patterns and to explore the potential impact of interventions. Reported behaviours, along with values derived from the literature, were used within a standard deterministic model of gonorrhoea transmission, where the population was stratified according to sex and rates of sex-partner change. The behaviours reported, particularly among women, are insufficient by themselves to explain the contin

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Chronic pain is a major global health challenge with substantial individual and societal burden. Epidemiological studies are essential for understanding the scale of the problem and identifying approaches to management. However, they reveal wide variation in reported prevalence, largely due to variations in defining and phenotyping of pain, with estimates spanning roughly 10%-50% depending on wording, recall period, severity thresholds, sampling and ascertainment mode. This paper discusses phenotyping approaches in pain epidemiology, highlighting the need for pre-spec
