Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) has recently been found in the aqueous humor. The present study was initiated to test whether the ciliary-body epithelium, the site of aqueous humor formation, is capable of producing TGF-beta. We studied the morphology and removal of lens epithelial cells in the following ways. Electronmicrographs of the choroid plexus from rats infected with Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense showed that trypomastigotes from the perivascular spaces may penetrate and undergo multiple division in the ependymal cells which locally constitute the blood-brain barrier. Bacterial colonization of mucosal surfaces may be mediated by bacterial adherence to epithelial cells. To study the role of adherence in gram-negative bacillary colonization of the upper respiratory tract, we studied 32 noncolonized patients undergoing elective surgery. An epithelial cell line (MDCK) was used to prepare monolayers which, in vitro, develop properties of transporting epithelia.
