The effects of ageing on flash visual evoked potentials (FVEP) recorded from 6 posterior parietal and occipital sites were studied in a sample of 73 healthy subjects of between 20 and 86 years of age. Latencies of components P1, N1 and P2, and amplitudes of components P1 and P3 increased linearly with age at all emplacements. The results obtained from occipital electrodes are in line with previous reports and additionally show that i) the effects of age constantly increase over time, and ii) age affects not only the early but also the later components (> 150 ms) of the FVEP. The overall patter…

PURPOSE: We wished to define the localization of cortical generators of visual (pattern) evoked potentials (VEP) and the temporal sequence of activation in the occipital region.
METHODS: In 4 candidates for epilepsy surgery, a large array of subdural electrodes was placed over occipital areas. Checkerboard pattern reversal stimuli were generated and the epileptogenic focus was localized and functionally mapped. Magnetic resonance imaging did not show any occipital lesions in any of the 4 patients.
RESULTS: The area first activated was the lingual gyrus in the mesial occipital lobe (negative …

BACKGROUND: An animal study in anaesthetized baboons demonstrated that somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEP) can be affected by extreme haemodilution. This might lead to misinterpretation and reduce the value of intraoperative SSEP monitoring when colloids are administered. In the present study, the effect of haemodilution (HD) and subsequent retransfusion of autologous blood on SSEP was determined in healthy non-premedicated volunteers.
METHOD: Acute isovolaemic HD served as a model for blood loss immediately replaced with colloids. In 12 volunteers, 20 ml/kg.bw blood was withdrawn within 3…

Cutaneous stimulation with CO2 laser pulses activates A delta of nociceptive afferents and evokes late cerebral potentials (LEPs), the amplitude of which correlates parametrically with the perceived magnitude estimation of laser pulses. Capsaicin is known to desensitize the nociceptive terminals of C fibers. In this double-blind, vehicle-controlled experiment, we tested the hypothesis that topical capsaicin would inactivate A delta afferents and lead to an attenuation of the LEPs. Subjects applied capsaicin cream to the dorsum of one hand and vehicle cream to the other 3 times daily for a peri

Pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials elicited by patterns of 60' and 20' checks and 33 Hz steady-state flash visual evoked potentials were recorded in low-vision children (visual acuity less than 20/120) with optic atrophy (18 eyes), amblyopia (18 eyes), macular degeneration (7 eyes) and controls (24 eyes). Steady-state visual evoked potentials were non-recordable in 17 out of 18 eyes of optic atrophy patients and normal in other children. Abnormalities of pattern-reversal visual evoked potentials were similar in all groups of patients. 33 Hz steady-state flash visual evoked potentials ar…

We studied vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in 6 patients after unilateral vestibular neurectomy and in 22 patients after unilateral vestibular neuritis and unilateral absent caloric responses. We found that the ipsilesional vestibular evoked potentials were abolished in every patient after unilateral vestibular neurectomy. In vestibular neuritis patients we found that the ipsilesional vestibular evoked potentials were absent in some but not in all cases. These findings confirm that the p13-n23 potential is of vestibular origin and also show that it is not of lateral canal origin.

We studied 13 patients suffering from localized spinal cord lesions by means of somatosensory evoked potentials obtained by electrical stimulation at various dermatome levels (SEPD). The results were compared to those of somatosensory evoked potentials obtained by stimulation of the posterior tibial nerve (SEPpt), as well as to clinical and radiologic data. Structural lesions could be demonstrated in 8 patients; in 5 patients, however, X-rays were normal and/or incompatible with symptoms. We found clear correlations among clinical or radiologic data and the level of lesion indicated by SEPD in…

Sixteen consecutive patients who were unable to ambulate independently due to cervical spondylotic myelopathy were treated surgically with the guidance of spinal cord evoked potentials (SCEPs). The SCEPs were recorded intraoperatively with needle electrodes inserted into serial cervical intervertebral discs after caudal epidural stimulation. Despite the presence of multiple extradural defects and/or cord compression seen on MRI, anterior decompression followed by fusion was able to be focused on a single level where the distinct change in waveform of the SCEP suggestive of spinal conduction bl…

The anterior faucial pillar, which is innervated by the glossopharyngeal nerve, is thought to be important in eliciting the pharyngeal swallow in awake humans. Glossopharyngeal evoked potentials (GPEP), elicited by mechanically stimulating this structure, were recorded from 30 normal adults using standard averaging techniques and a recording montage of 16 scalp electrodes. Ten of the subjects experienced a desire to swallow in response to stimulation. Repeatable responses were recorded from all 30 subjects. The GPEPs recorded from the posterior scalp were W-shaped and consisted of P1, N1, P2, …

Radial, median, and ulnar nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were recorded, with non-cephalic reference montage, in 38 patients with clinical signs of cervical myelopathy and MRI evidence of spondylotic compression of the cervical cord. Upper limb SEPs are useful in spondylotic myelopathy because SEPs were abnormal in all patients for at least one of the stimulated nerves and SEP abnormalities were bilateral in all patients but one. Reduction of the amplitude of the N13 potential indicating a segmental dysfunction of the cervical cord was the most frequent abnormality; it occurred in…

Visual evoked potentials (VEPs) were compared among six groups of patients tested at various times after an episode of acute unilateral optic neuritis (ON). The incidence of abnormalities ranged from above 90% in patients tested during the first 6 months to about 70% when more than 2 years had elapsed. Compared with the acute stage (1-8 weeks), latency prolongation was almost 50% less in patients tested after 2-19 years. In the latter group, latencies were significantly correlated with the patients' age at the time of the attack. The findings confirm and extend the evidence of serial studies w…

A reversible conductive hearing loss produced during the first 4 weeks post partum caused marked alterations in the development of click-evoked auditory brainstem (ABR) and middle latency (MLR) responses in guinea pigs. The early component PI in the ABR in controls showed adult-like latencies at the time of birth, while the later ABR components PIII and PV and all components investigated in the MLR showed postnatal development characterized by a shortened latency that persisted for the whole period of investigation. The course of the ABR latencies showed the sharpest decrease during the first

Somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were recorded from rat spinal cord (sSEPs) and cerebral cortex (cSEPs). Stimulus sites included either one or both sural nerve branches having different fiber populations (group A), or distal to a lesion of controlled size of the sural nerve made 1 week earlier (group B). In the two groups of animals, amplitudes of SEPs correlated with the quantity of large myelinated nerve fibers. Peak latencies of sSEPs in group A related to the ratio of sizes of transmitting fibers. sSEPs and cSEPs in both groups A and B could be recorded in a reproducible fashion by s…

Objective diagnosis of olfaction can be performed by registration of cortical olfactory evoked potentials (OEP) and of contingent negative variation (CNV). The CNV is a negative voltage developing at the vertex after discrimination of one of two smells while the patient is expecting a second stimulus. By an adequate procedure, including a long time window for averaging (2.56 seconds) with appropriate filters, the two tests can be performed simultaneously in a single session of less than 10 minutes. Anosmia is determinable by both OEP and CNV, although CNV shows less variability. On the other h…

Somatosensory evoked potentials were after double stimuli on the posterior tibial nerve for the intraoperative monitoring in 58 thoracolumbar or lumbar surgeries. The first cortical positive potential P38 and P'38 after the second stimulus was recorded after double stimuli. Transient decreased amplitude more than 50% or missing potential of P'38 was found in 11 cases. These P'38 changes occurred in five procedures of retracting the nerve roots or dural sacs, three cases of reducing of thoracolumbar fractures, and two procedures of transpedicular screwing. No causative procedure was found in on…
