Effects of Heart Rate-Synchronized Breathing on Anaerobic Threshold During Incremental Exercise Testing: A Preliminary Case Series.

Heart rate-synchronized breathing (HRSB) -- a technique in which the respiratory cycle is entrained to the cardiac cycle -- may optimize autonomic nervous function and ventilatory efficiency, potentially improving exercise tolerance. However, its effect on the anaerobic threshold (AT) remains unclear. This study examined the influence of HRSB on AT and related physiological indices during incremental cycle ergometry in healthy young adults. Three healthy male adults (mean age: 22.3 ± 1.2 years) underwent two cardiopulmonary exercise tests on separate days: Day 1 (normal breathing, control) and…

Encapsulated environment.

In many occupational settings, clothing must be worn to protect individuals from hazards in their work environment. However, personal protective clothing (PPC) restricts heat exchange with the environment due to high thermal resistance and low water vapor permeability. As a consequence, individuals who wear PPC often work in uncompensable heat stress conditions where body heat storage continues to rise and the risk of heat injury is greatly enhanced. Tolerance time while wearing PPC is influenced by three factors: (i) initial core temperature (Tc), affected by heat acclimation, precooling, hyd

Canagliflozin Prevents Hyperglycemia-Associated Muscle Extracellular Matrix Accumulation and Improves the Adaptive Response to Aerobic Exercise.

Chronic hyperglycemia is associated with low response to aerobic exercise training in rodent models and humans, including reduced aerobic exercise capacity and impaired oxidative remodeling in skeletal muscle. Here, we investigated whether glucose lowering with the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i), canagliflozin (Cana; 30 mg/kg/day), could restore exercise training response in a model of hyperglycemia (low-dose streptozotocin [STZ]). Cana effectively prevented increased blood glucose in STZ-treated mice. After 6 weeks of voluntary wheel running, Cana-treated mice displayed imp

Paradoxical response to exercise in asymptomatic hypertrophic cardiomyopathy: a new description of outflow tract obstruction dynamics.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to analyze left ventricular obstruction in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) during exercise echocardiography. BACKGROUND: Despite the association of symptoms with left ventricular outflow tract obstruction in HCM, there exist paradoxical situations in which significant intraventricular gradients (>50 mm Hg) at rest occur in conjunction with excellent exercise tolerance. METHODS: To examine this phenomenon, we performed exercise echocardiography and analyzed the clinical status of 107 HCM patients with and without resting obstruction. …

Cardiopulmonary exercise testing in the functional and prognostic evaluation of patients with pulmonary diseases.

Exercise testing is increasingly utilized to evaluate the level of exercise intolerance in patients with lung and heart diseases. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is considered the gold standard to study a patient's level of exercise limitation and its causes. The 2 CPET protocols most frequently used in the clinical setting are the maximal incremental and the constant work rate tests. The aim of this review is to focus on the main respiratory diseases for which exercise tolerance is indicated; for example, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interstitial lung disease, primary pulmon…

Exploring whether home-based neuromodulation can boost the analgesic effects of exercise in people with knee osteoarthritis: protocol for a double-blinded, pilot randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) represents a leading cause of disability globally. Exercise has been demonstrated to improve pain and function in people with knee OA. However, when in pain, commencement of exercise is difficult, and clinical effects with such interventions are often modest. Recently, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a form of non-invasive brain stimulation, has been shown to bolster the pain-relieving effect of exercise in experimental settings. While promising, the utility of employing this approach beyond the research environment is yet to be elucidated

Ventilatory limitation to exercise in patients with HFpEF and obesity: No room to breathe.

BACKGROUND: Lowering pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) by sublingual nitroglycerin (NTG) fails to increase exercise capacity in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). These findings beg the question as to the origin of exercise limitation. Our objective was to determine whether exercise tolerance could be ventilatory limited in older patients with HFpEF and obesity. METHODS: Patients with HFpEF and obesity (n = 42) underwent pulmonary artery and radial artery catheterizations. Cardiorespiratory responses, breathing mechanics, and arterial blood gases wer…

The Effects of Exercise Training on Glucose Homeostasis and Muscle Metabolism in Type 1 Diabetic Female Mice.

Although exercise training is an important recommendation for the management of type 1 diabetes (T1D), most of the available research studies predominantly focus on male subjects. Given the importance of sex as a biological variable, additional studies are required to improve the knowledge gap regarding sex differences in T1D research. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the role of exercise training in mediating changes in glucose homeostasis and skeletal muscle metabolism in T1D female mice. Female mice were injected with streptozotocin (STZ) to induce T1D. Two weeks after ST

Central and peripheral adaptations to physical training in patients with end-stage renal disease.

Renal replacement treatment options are life-saving treatments for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). However, prolonged survival in patients with ESRD is associated with various functional and morphological disorders from almost all systems. Anaemia, deconditioning, cardiac dysfunction. impairment of cardiac autonomic control and skeletal muscle weakness and fatigue, primarily because of 'uraemic' myopathy and neuropathy, are the main predisposing factors for their poor functional ability. Physical training is being recommended as a complementary therapeutic modality. There are gen

Choices of therapy for exercise-induced asthma in children.

Cough and wheezing interferes with sport and other forms of physical activity in half of asthmatic children. Airway obstruction can be induced by a standard exercise test in over 70% of children with asthma. A beta-adrenergic agonist or cromone taken by inhalation beforehand will usually inhibit bronchoconstriction provoked by a free running exercise test. The duration of protective effect with salbutamol, terbutaline and cromones is less than 4 h. The long acting beta-adrenergic agonists formoterol and salmeterol give protection against exercise-induced airway obstruction for up to 12 h, whic
