Predicting coronary heart disease in Chinese diabetics using machine learning.

Diabetes, a common chronic disease worldwide, can induce vascular complications, such as coronary heart disease (CHD), which is also one of the main causes of human death. It is of great significance to study the factors of diabetic patients complicated with CHD for understanding the occurrence of diabetes/CHD comorbidity. In this study, by analyzing the risk of CHD in more than 300,000 diabetes patients in southwest China, an artificial intelligence (AI) model was proposed to predict the risk of diabetes/CHD comorbidity. Firstly, we statistically analyzed the distribution of four types of fea

Electroencephalography in encephalopathy and encephalitis.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a useful adjunct to clinical neurological examination, particularly as it may detect subtle or subclinical disturbance of cerebral function and it allows monitoring of cerebral activity over time. Continuous EEG combined with quantitative analysis and machine learning may help identify changes in real time, before the emergence of clinical signs and response to interventions. EEG is rarely pathognomonic in encephalopathy/encephalitis but when interpreted correctly and within the clinical context, certain phenotypes may indicate a specific pathophysiology (eg, la

Electromyography pattern-recognition based prosthetic limb control using various machine learning techniques.

People who have lost their limbs to amputation and neurological disorders confront this loss every morning. As per the literature review, nearly 30% of the Indian population suffered from upper extremity amputation. As a coping-up measure, a force-controlled prosthetic limb has been developed to improve their self-reliance, quality of lifestyle and mental strength. The current prosthetic limb operation is done by residual muscle contraction, which contributes to the activation of the sensor and the motor. But there are some cons, the amputee does not know how much pressure needs to be exerted

Development of AI classification model for angiosome-wise interpretive substantiation of plantar feet thermal asymmetry in type 2 diabetic subjects using infrared thermograms.

Diabetic Foot Syndrome (DFS) is the prime impetus for most of the lower extremity complications among the diabetic subjects. DFS is characterized by aberrant variations in plantar foot temperature distribution while healthy subjects exhibit a symmetric thermal pattern between the contralateral and ipsilateral plantar feet. Thus, "asymmetry analysis" of foot thermal distribution is contributory in assessment of overall foot health of diabetic subjects. The study, aims to classify symmetric and asymmetric foot regions angiosome-wise, by comparing minimal number of color image features - color mo

An optimized machine learning framework for predicting intradialytic hypotension using indexes of chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorders.

Intradialytic hypotension (IDH) is the most common acute complication in hemodialysis (HD) sessions and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in HD patients. To prevent the episode of IDH, it is critical to predict its occurrence. Chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorders (CKD-MBD) induce cardiac and vascular calcification, which impairs the compensatory mechanisms of blood pressure during HD. In this study, we proposed a feature selection framework called BSWEGWO_KELM to analyze 1940 records from 178 HD patients, which was based on an enhanced grey wolf optimization (GW

A fast approximation method for principal component analysis applied to ECG derived respiration for OSA detection.

In this paper, we present an approximation method for principal component analysis (PCA) and apply it to estimating the respiration from the overnight ECG signal. The approximation method is computationally fast with low memory requirements. We compare it to a full PCA method which is applied to segments of the ECG. Features were calculated from the two ECG derived respiration signals (EDR) and classifiers trained to detect obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). The Extreme Learning Machine and Linear Discriminant classifier were used to classify the recordings. The data from 35 overnight ECG recordi

Enhancement of early cervical cancer diagnosis with epithelial layer analysis of fluorescence lifetime images.

This work reports the use of layer analysis to aid the fluorescence lifetime diagnosis of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) from H&E stained cervical tissue sections. The mean and standard deviation of lifetimes in single region of interest (ROI) of cervical epithelium were previously shown to correlate to the gold standard histopathological classification of early cervical cancer. These previously defined single ROIs were evenly divided into layers for analysis. A 10-layer model revealed a steady increase in fluorescence lifetime from the inner to the outer epithelial layers of healthy

Fluorescence fingerprinting to predict multiple chromatic and phenolic parameters for a diversified set of red wines.

Absorbance-transmittance and fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (A-TEEM) spectroscopy was utilised to study red wines (n = 113) undergoing maturation or bottle ageing. Chromatic and phenolic parameters including wine colour density, hue, monomeric pigments, various forms of polymeric pigments, tannin concentration using precipitation assays, SO2 resistant pigments, total anthocyanins, and total phenolics were modelled. Machine learning models using extreme gradient boosting (XGB) regression were developed for EEM data and fused A-TEEM data based on reference chemistry, achieving high R2 a

Machine learning uncovers previously undetectable genetic deletions in cancer panel sequencing.

Missed genetic deletions can prevent cancer patients from receiving effective targeted therapy. Standard pipelines, such as TSO500, use bin count averaging for copy number variation detection but often overlook focal events. To address this, we developed a machine learning (ML) pipeline for deletion detection and zygosity evaluation within the MASTERsg precision oncology program. We focused on the tumor suppressor gene PTEN, whose loss confers sensitivity to mTOR/Akt inhibition. An Extreme Gradient Boosting model trained on PTEN-deleted and wild-type tumor samples identified focal deletions mi

Hydrogen isotopes reveal water leakage from the core.

Chemical heterogeneities in Earth's deep mantle may record either preserved primordial reservoirs or later core-mantle exchange, but distinguishing between these origins remains challenging. Hydrogen isotopes offer a sensitive tracer, yet whether magma ocean crystallization could generate a deuterium-depleted deep reservoir has not been quantitatively evaluated. Here, we use machine learning-accelerated path-integral simulations to determine equilibrium hydrogen isotope fractionation between silicate melt and bridgmanite, ringwoodite, and wadsleyite under magma ocean conditions. Incorporating

Robust bionic distributed multimodal flexible sensor for extreme-condition sensing and intelligent operation.

Traditional multimodal flexible sensors struggle with system integration, limited node scalability, and overall robustness, posing multiple critical challenges. Inspired by the tiger-shark scalp, we present BDMFS, a robust bionic distributed multimodal flexible sensor, integrating an S-shaped optical network mimicking subcutaneous mechanoreceptors with a self-powered triboelectric interface emulating ampullae-based proximity sensing. A microstructured elastic dielectric layer serves as both optical substrate and triboelectric layer, providing exceptional flexibility, mechanical robustness, and

SMCseeker: An attentive virtual screening model for antiviral discovery.

Influenza virus, with high morbidity and mortality rates, is a global health threat. Traditional antiviral screenings are costly, whereas machine learning could enhance the effectiveness of antiviral drug discovery. Leveraging a large-scale, in-house antiviral dataset against H1N1, we developed a small molecule compound seeker (SMCseeker) framework for identifying highly active anti-H1N1 agents. Data augmentation and a multi-head attention mechanism were utilized to address the extreme data imbalance and enhance the generalization ability of the model. 18,093 structure-activity signatures afte

Real-time classification of shoulder girdle motions for multifunctional prosthetic hand control: A preliminary study.

In every country in the world, there are a number of amputees who have been exposed to some accidents that led to the loss of their upper limbs. The aim of this study is to suggest a system for real-time classification of five classes of shoulder girdle motions for high-level upper limb amputees using a pattern recognition system. In the suggested system, the wavelet transform was utilized for feature extraction, and the extreme learning machine was used as a classifier. The system was tested on four intact-limbed subjects and one amputee, with eight channels involving five electromyography ch
