We studied the histopathologic changes of three eyes enucleated two weeks, eight weeks, and 17 months, respectively, after noncontact Nd:YAG cyclophotocoagulation. The histologic findings at two weeks were destruction of the nonpigmented and pigmented ciliary body epithelium, occlusion of the capillaries of the ciliary processes, and ciliary body stromal necrosis in the region of the processes. Hyperplasia of the pigmented and nonpigmented epithelium, fibrosis and near total atrophy of the ciliary processes, and partial atrophy of the ciliary muscles were present at eight weeks and 17 months.

Cases of craniocerebral injuries associated with foreign body penetration into the cranial cavity are not frequent in peacetime. The reported case was that of shot wound of the head caused by a steel pin used in construction works. The foreign body penetrated into the cranial cavity through the right eyeball and across the brain to the occipital lobe. The foreign body was not removed, and after 34 days in hospital the patient was discharged home with only a slight neurological deficit, i.e. low-grade paresis of his left foot. No remote complications were observed during 4 years of follow-up.

A young patient is described who presented with sudden visual loss in the left eye quickly followed by proliferative retinopathy with retinal detachment and thrombotic glaucoma. He developed similar initial symptoms in the right eye but has now made a complete recovery in that eye on systemic steroids, oral acyclovir, cyclosporin A and colchicine. Pathological examination of the left eye revealed inflammation in the ciliary body, retina and choroid with prominent eosinophils. The nature of the initial insult and the possible role of the eosinophils are discussed.

Metastatic melanoma to the eye can show a number of unusual features. Two cases with intraocular metastases from primary cutaneous malignant melanoma, with a latency of 5 and 16 years, respectively, from excision to debut of ocular symptoms are reported. An aqueous-drainage silicone device was implanted in a 57-year-old diabetic patient with neovascular glaucoma after failure of conventional therapy. Postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) was well controlled, ranging between 10 and 20 mm Hg without the use of supplemental agents. Eight malignant uveal melanomas irradiated with Stallard's 60Co applicator or Lommatzsch's 106Ru/106Rh applicator were studied by light microscopy and immunohistochemistry to analyse tumour cell morphology, antigenic expression and inflammatory cell infiltration in relation to radiation dose. BACKGROUND: In this study, the effect of intravitreal injection of bevacizumab on choroidal blood vessels was examined in primate eyes.
METHODS: Four Cynomolgus monkeys received an intravitreal injection of 1.25 mg bevacizumab. The eyes were enucleated on days 1, 4, 7 and 14. For each animal, one eye was embedded in paraffin whereas the other eye was embedded for electron microscopy. Seven untreated or PBS (phosphate buffered saline)-injected monkeys were used as controls.
RESULTS: Thrombotic microangiopathy was found in the choriocapillaris and choroidal vessels of all eight injected eyes.

A 5-year-old, neutered male Domestic Short-haired cat was referred with a 5-month history of anterior uveitis and cataract in the right eye. Clinical examination confirmed anterior uveitis and immature cataract in the right eye and chorioretinitis in the left eye. Ocular ultrasound showed a retinal detachment in the right eye. Diagnostic testing revealed elevated serum titers for Toxoplasma gondii. Anterior uveitis in the right eye and chorioretinitis in the left eye progressed, resulting in blindness despite a 21-day course of clindamycin and aggressive topical medical management of uveitis.

Retinoblastoma manifests as ocular malignancy due to mutations in the RB1 gene. A 17-month-old girl with bilateral retinoblastoma having no family history was admitted to our hospital. The right eye was enucleated but the other was preserved with systemic chemotherapy and topical treatment. The patient has been tumor-free for over 7 years since diagnosis. All exons of RB1 were sequenced and a novel 1-base pair deletion (NM_000321.2:c.2409del, p.Asn803Lysfs*7) was detected.
