The balanced polymorphism of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G6PD-) is believed to have evolved through the selective pressure of malarial combined with consumption of fava beans. The implicated fava bean constituents are the hydroxypyrimidine glucosides vicine and convicine, which upon hydrolysis of their beta-O-glucosidic bond, became protein pro-oxidants. In this work we show that the glucosides inhibit the growth of Plasmodium falciparum, increase the hexose-monophosphate shunt activity and the phagocytosis of malaria-infected erythrocytes. These activities are exacerbated in

The use of a DNA alkylating agent, which induces poly(ADP-ribose) formation, has been employed to study the incorporation of [adenine 14C]NAD into pea root meristem nuclei, which is a prerequisite for poly(ADP-ribose) synthesis. The incorporation of [adenine 14C]NAD is significantly reduced when the poly(ADP-ribose)polymerase inhibitors, 7-methylxanthine and 3-methoxybenzamide are present and this incorporation is augmented when the DNA alkylating agent methyl methanesulfonate is added. Such information supports the hypothesis that poly(ADP-ribose) may be involved in the cell cycle regulation

UNLABELLED: Celiac disease is among the most important health problems and the most important feature of this disease is its being the only lifelong food allergy. To overcome this problem, some gluten-free and starch based food products have been generally introduced to the market; however, these products are starch based with low nutritive value. Therefore, it is important to enrich such products for individuals who are obliged to be nourished by gluten-free diet. In this study, wheat flour was replaced with quinoa flour (QF) in the production of tarhana. The objective of this work was to inv

Potent Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) represent a threat to public health and safety. Botulism is a disease caused by BoNT intoxication that results in muscle paralysis that can be fatal. Sensitive assays capable of detecting BoNTs from different substrates and settings are essential to limit foodborne contamination and morbidity. In this report, we describe a rapid 96-well microfluidic double sandwich immunoassay for the sensitive detection of BoNT-A from animal sera. This BoNT microfluidic assay requires only 5 μL of serum, provides results in 75 min using a standard fluorescence microplate r

Besides the known compounds longistylines C (1), D (2), and 3,5-dimethoxystilbene (5), five new prenylated stilbenes, named chiricanines A--E (3, 4, 6--8), have been isolated from the root bark of Lonchocarpus chiricanus. Their structures were resolved on the basis of spectrometric methods including (1)H, (13)C, and 2D NMR experiments and mass spectrometry. Compound 3 was the only prenylated stilbene to demonstrate antifungal effects against Cladosporium cucumerinum. Four of the isolated compounds showed toxic properties against larvae of the yellow fever-transmitting mosquito Aedes aegypti. C
