Escherichia Coli-Related Necrotizing Fasciitis After Renal Transplantation: A Case Report.

A 39-year-old man who had received cadaveric renal transplantation (RT) 1 month previously presented with rash and pain on his left lower extremity. Initially, bacterial cellulitis was suspected, and ampicillin/sulbactam was initiated; however, 3 days later, skin necrosis occurred and pain increased. Ampicillin/sulbactam was replaced with imipenem+ciprofloxacin, and surgical debridement was performed. Escherichia coli was identified in the wound culture, urine culture, and blood culture. After repeated debridement, wound care, and appropriate antimicrobial treatment, wounds began to heal and s

Massive necrotizing fasciitis following bellow-knee arterial surgery - A therapeutic challenge.

INTRODUCTION: Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare, progressive bacterial infection of superficial fascia followed by secondary subcutaneous tissue necrosis. We pressented a patient with massive fulminant lifethreatening necrotising fasciitis after bellow-knee femoro-popliteal vein bypass grafting successfully treated by antibiotics, surgical debridement and final skin reconstruction using the Tierch method. CASE REPORT: A 61-year-old patient was admitted to the Vascular Surgery Clinic for below-knee femoro-popliteal bypass grafting. He complained of intermittent claudication in the left leg after

Streptococcal Necrotizing Fasciitis with Toxic Shock Syndrome and Rapid Fatal Outcome.

INTRODUCTION: Streptococcal necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a serious soft tissue infection with rapid progression of inflammatory process among superficial or deep fascia, systemic host response to infection leading to toxic shock syndrome (TSS), and multiple organ failure. Lethality is high. CASE OUTLINE: A 46-year-old male without co-morbidities was admitted to the Emergency Department with redness, swelling and pain on his right lower leg. He became sick two days earlier with malaise, chills and shivering. On admission he was hypotensive, anuric, with erythematous rash on his face, neck and

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis and diabetic ketoacidosis: literature review and case report.

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare polymicrobial infection that can be life-threatening. It is a rapidly progressive inflammatory process affecting the deep fascia, with secondary necrosis of the subcutaneous tissue. It is characterized by its fulminant course and its high mortality rate. Most cases of NF affect the abdomen, groin, and extremities. NF in the neck is reported to be rare and most cases are odontogenic in origin. Misdiagnosis and delayed treatment can result in death from sepsis, mediastinitis, carotid artery erosion, jugular vein thrombophlebitis, or aspiration pneumonia. The

[Necrotizing fasciitis and double bowel perforation after retropubic sub-urethral sling].

A 60-year-old woman without medical history developed after a Tension-free Vaginal Tape (TVT) procedure a necrotizing fasciitis and an abscess. After unadapted initial treatment, surgical procedure revealed 2 bowel perforations caused by the sling. Treatment was achieved by total mesh removal, bowel repair, necrosis excision and vacuum-assisted closure system. This is the first case report about the association of necrotizing fasciitis and double bowel perforations after TVT procedure. Any critical sepsis or with unsatisfactory evolution after retropubic sub-urethral sling has to make look for

[Necrotizing fasciitis: study of 17 cases presenting a low mortality rate].

UNLABELLED: Necrotizing fasciitis is a hypodermis, muscular fascia then dermis necrotizing infection. OBJECTIVE: The originality of this study is to present a series of necrotizing fasciitis treated and followed these last five years, and to compare the therapeutic results with those of the literature. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We led a retrospective study on the patients treated for necrotizing fasciitis between 2005 and 2009 by bringing together the demographic and clinical data, the bacteriological examinations and the results of management. Follow-up data from these patients during period of

A fatal case of necrotizing Aeromonas schubertii fasciitis after penetrating injury.

Necrotizing fasciitis is an uncommon but life-threatening condition with a high associated mortality and morbidity. Most infections are polymicrobial, another distinct form of necrotizing fasciitis that occurred by penetrating freshwater trauma, such as fishing or wading in wet fields. Aeromonas species are responsible. The rapidity of the infectious process is similar to that of clostridial infection, but gas production is not a consistent feature. We report a patient who presented with fever, chills, and bullae on left forearm, despite antibiotics and wound debridement; the infection extend

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis with descending mediastinitis: literature review and case report.

Cervical necrotizing fasciitis (CNF) can develop from odontogenic infections that spread to the deep fascial planes of the neck. This polymicrobial infection is rapidly progressive, destructive, and often fatal. Prompt diagnosis, recognition of acuity, aggressive, repeated surgical treatment, and medical management contribute to improved survival. Nevertheless, the progression of the disease to descending mediastinitis and septic shock leads to a poor prognosis and decreased survival. A comprehensive review of the current data regarding CNF was conducted using MEDLINE, PubMed, Scopus, and Goog

Necrotizing fasciitis following psoas muscle abscess caused by hypermucoviscous Klebsiella pneumoniae.

A 59-year-old Japanese diabetic woman was admitted to a small private hospital with general malaise, fever, and a 1-month history of low back pain. A computed tomography scan of the abdomen revealed left abdominal necrotizing fasciitis with suspected left psoas muscle abscess. She was transferred to Gunma University Hospital, received antibiotic therapy, and underwent debridement of the infected subcutaneous tissue, fascia, and necrotic left psoas muscle. She was transferred to the intensive care unit to receive mechanical ventilation and inotropic support. Blood culture showed growth of Klebs

Necrotizing fasciitis: a fourteen-year retrospective study of 163 consecutive patients.

This review was prompted by continued public and professional interest of necrotizing fasciitis as well as worldwide increases in the incidence of streptococcal invasive infections. Our objective was to outline the clinical course of necrotizing fasciitis and delineate factors relating to mortality among 163 diagnosed patients. Over 14 years patients diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis were reviewed for patient history, comorbid conditions, and progression of clinical course. A logistic regression model was used to identify factors increasing mortality risk among necrotizing fasciitis patient

[Streptococcus beta hemolytic necrotizing fasciitis. 5 cases in the Brussels area].

In the Brussels area five cases of necrotizing fasciitis occurred during the past two years in patients devoid of any pathology likely to lower the immune defence mechanisms. Alcoholism and the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs seem to act as contributory factors. Necrotizing fasciitis develops alone or as complication of a pre-existent dermo-hypodermic infection. A massive use of antibiotics and a wide surgical slitting up failed to prevent a fatal issue in all five patients. Extremely early massive surgery remains vital in this disease.
