OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between lung function and body composition in cystic fibrosis (CF) and examine the presence of normal-weight obesity (NWO), a high body fat percentage with a normal body mass index (BMI), in this population.
METHODS: In a pilot, cross-sectional study, 32 subjects with CF and a reference group of 20 adults without CF underwent body composition analysis with air displacement plethysmography. NWO was defined as a BMI <25 kg/m(2) and body fat >30% (for women) or >23% (for men). Lung function in subjects with CF was determined by the percen

BACKGROUND: To examine the association of intrahepatic fat with homeostasis model assessment-insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), a marker of insulin resistance, in Japanese adults, and whether intrahepatic fat is associated with insulin resistance independent of waist circumference and other measures of obesity.
METHODS: Fifty-three individuals aged 37-69 were studied. Spectrum obtained using a 3-T magnetic resonance imager was analysed with LCModel to quantify intrahepatic fat. Blood levels of insulin, glucose and other biochemical markers were obtained after 8h or more fasting. Percent body fat w

Background and Objectives: The management of type 2 diabetes (T2D) extends beyond glycemic control, requiring a more global strategy that includes optimization of body composition, even more so in the context of sarcopenia and visceral adiposity, as they contribute to poor outcomes. Past reviews have typically been focused on weight reduction or glycemic effectiveness, with limited inclusion of new therapies' effects on muscle and fat distribution. In addition, the emergence of incretin-based therapies and dual agonists such as tirzepatide requires an updated synthesis of their impacts on body

Sexual dimorphism in human body composition is evident from fetal life, but emerges primarily during puberty. At birth, males have a similar fat mass to females but are longer and have greater lean mass. Such differences remain detectable during childhood; however, females enter puberty earlier and undergo a more rapid pubertal transition, whereas boys have a substantially longer growth period. After adjusting for dimorphism in size (height), adult males have greater total lean mass and mineral mass, and a lower fat mass than females. These whole-body differences are complemented by major diff

BACKGROUND: Lipodystrophy studies in HIV-infected patients have usually defined abnormalities in body fat by clinical evaluation and patient questionnaires. Despite the risk for bias with these subjective approaches, agreement analysis among the large number of variables employed was seldom performed.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze consistency between the usual approaches for definition of abnormalities in body fat distribution.
DESIGN: We evaluated agreement between the clinical and questionnaire findings for abnormalities in body fat in an HIV patient population under antiretroviral treatment follo

The level and source of dietary protein and energy provided during rearing and laying might influence body composition and metabolic functions of laying hens. We therefore studied the influence of a low or high Apparent Fecal Digestible (AFD) Lys level in all rearing diets and constant or reduced ME level and source during laying (Reducing Energy over time with High Oil = REHO; Constant Energy High Oil = CE; Reducing Energy over time with Low Oil = RELO) on body composition and metabolism in a 2 × 3 factorial design. Dekalb White pullets were randomly divided over 8 pens per treatment and hous

BACKGROUND: Normal-weight obesity (NWO) describes individuals with a normal body mass index (BMI), but high body fat percent. NWO are at-risk for cardiometabolic diseases, but little is known about their bone health.
METHODS: Adults (N = 24) were classified as NWO (n = 12; 5M/7F) or low body fat percent controls (Con; n = 12; 6M/6F). Body composition and whole-body bone mineral density (BMD) were assessed using DXA. A serum bioplex assay was performed to examine markers related to bone formation and resorption.
RESULTS: In addition to higher body fat percent and visceral fat, NWO had lower w

Indirect calorimetry was used to measure resting metabolic rates (RMR), and densitometry and anthropometry were used to measure body fat and fat-free masses of 32 adults with very short stature. Twenty-seven of them were achondroplastic dwarfs. Their results were compared to those obtained from 103 lean and obese adults with normal heights. All 32 dwarfs had distinctly greater RMR per kg fat-free mass by densitometry than adults with average stature. However, there was a wide variation in the RMR among dwarfs, which was independent of leanness or obesity. In spite of increased RMR, obesity amo

INTRODUCTION: Body fat distribution is strongly associated with cardiometabolic disease (CMD), but the relative importance of hepatic fat as an underlying driver remains unclear. Here, we applied a systems biology approach to compare the clinical and molecular subnetworks that correlate with hepatic fat, visceral fat, and abdominal subcutaneous fat distribution.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional sub-study of 283 children/adolescents (7-19 years) from the Yale Pediatric NAFLD Cohort. Untargeted, high-resolution metabolomics (HRM) was performed on plasma and combined with

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated changes in body composition before and after neoadjuvant therapy in patients with gastric cancer and explored the relationships between these changes, relative dose intensity (RDI), and hematological toxicity.
METHODS: Body composition parameters (muscle mass, skeletal muscle mass, body fat mass, visceral fat area, and water content) were measured via an InBody 720 analyzer before and after treatment. The primary outcome was a reduced RDI (<85%), and the secondary outcome was Grade 2 or 3 hematological toxicity.
RESULTS: Patients with a reduced RDI (<85%) p

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypotheses that obesity due to a very high-fat diet induces knee osteoarthritis (OA), and that short-term wheel-running exercise protects against obesity-induced knee OA by reducing systemic inflammation and metabolic dysregulation.
METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice were fed either a control diet (13.5% kcal from fat) or a very high-fat diet (60% kcal from fat) from age 12 weeks to age 24 weeks. From 20 to 24 weeks of age, half of the mice were housed with running wheels. The severity of knee OA was determined by assessing histopathologic features, and serum cytokines were me

OBJECTIVES: We recently reported that skeletal muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) is related to total body and abdominal fatness in a pooled population of young and older males. Both MSNA and adiposity increase with age. Thus, it is not clear if the relation between MSNA and adiposity exists among older adults and if the age-related increase in MSNA is explained by increases in adiposity. We therefore tested the hypotheses that: 1) among older men, those with higher total body fatness and abdominal adiposity have higher MSNA and 2) MSNA is not different in healthy young and older men wit

BACKGROUND: Phase angle (PhA) has been recognized as a marker of cellular integrity and muscle quality. Although cross-sectional evidence suggests associations between PhA and body composition components, longitudinal data in adolescent athletes remain limited.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze longitudinal changes in PhA over a 6-month period and to investigate its associations with lean soft tissue and body fat percentage in adolescent athletes.
METHODS: This longitudinal study included 47 adolescent athletes (40.4 percent female; median age 15.2 years at baseline) followed over 6 months. Phase angle

OBJECTIVES: HIV-related lipodystrophy is a syndrome of adipose tissue redistribution, dyslipidaemia and insulin resistance. Combination antiretroviral therapy (CART) is a key risk factor. We hypothesized that fat redistribution in HIV-infected children is related to altered endocrine function of adipose tissue, namely leptin secretion.
METHODS: Serum leptin and fat redistribution were measured in 104 HIV-infected children in a prospective observational study from 2003 to 2004. Fat redistribution was defined by clinical observation. Body fatness was estimated using body mass index and four ski

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is frequent in lung cancer and is measured using various tools, including the novel bioelectric impedance technique for measuring body composition. However, the validation of this technique for assessing body composition in advanced small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is untested.
METHODS: Forty-one treatment naïve patients (all males) and an equal number of age- and sex-matched controls were evaluated by anthropometric measurements of skinfold thicknesses and body composition parameters such as body fat%, fat mass, fat-free mass (FFM), and total body water (TBW).
RESULTS:

PURPOSE: This meta-analysis examined whether short-term probiotic/synbiotic supplementation reduces body weight, BMI, fat mass, body fat percentage, and lean body mass in adults with overweight or obesity.
METHODS: Electronic databases were searched for RCTs of probiotic or synbiotic interventions versus placebo. Study quality was assessed using the Cochrane Risk-of-Bias tool. Standardized mean differences (Hedges' g; RevMan 5.4) were pooled using a random-effects model on post-intervention endpoint values.
RESULTS: Ten RCTs (633 participants) were included. No significant differences were o
