Intracerebral Hemorrhage Secondary to Scorpion Toxin in the Northwest of Argentina; A Case Report.

Scorpionism is the clinical picture resulting from the inoculation of scorpion venom. It is considered a major public health problem, especially in countries with low resources and tropical or subtropical climate. Poisoning can be fatal especially in the first hours due to respiratory and / or cardiovascular collapse. The compromise of the central nervous system (CNS) is infrequent but varied and complex, being able to be triggered due to multiple and different neurotoxic properties of the toxin. We report here a severe case of poisoning with cardiovascular and neurological compromise in an en

Forensic aspects of water intoxication: four case reports and review of relevant literature.

Water intoxication (WI) is a rare condition that originates from over-consumption of water, with a potentially fatal outcome. Increased water intake (polydipsia) is followed by urination of high amount of diluted urine (polyuria) which are the main initial symptoms of WI. We present four case reports of WI. Two of them are unusual pediatric clinical cases using medical documentation and police case files, one of which is related to child abuse, and the other to a psychiatric disorder. The other two cases are fatal adult cases submitted to autopsy from a psychiatric hospital. Also, we present a…

The definitive diagnosis of sclerosing mesenteritis and the cause of the fatal outcome were disclosed at autopsy. This case indicates that sclerosing mesenteritis is a potentially-fatal disease and the need for aggressive treatment should be discussed.

A case of polyarteritis nodosa presenting initially as peripheral vascular disease.

Polyarteritis nodosa is a rare necrotizing vasculitis that can be progressive and fatal, and its initial presenting symptom may be leg claudication due to peripheral vascular ischemia. To date, there have been fewer than ten case reports of polyarteritis nodosa presenting as peripheral vascular disease. We report a case of a 38-year-old man initially diagnosed to have premature peripheral vascular disease who presented 1 year later with symptoms consistent with giant cell arteritis and subsequently developed bowel ischemia leading to a fatal outcome. Based on the autopsy and the patient's clin…

[Outbreak of Marburg hemorrhagic fever in Angola].

Marburg hemorrhagic fever is a rare acute viral fever illness with a serious clinical course often leading to a fatal outcome. The lethality rate ranges between 25 and 80 %. Both the virus reservoir and mode of transmission to humans are unknown. Close contact with body fluids of infected persons is prerequisite for secondary human to human transmission. Seriousness of the infection is underlined by the unavailability of specific treatment and vaccination. The outbreak in Angola in 2004-2005 accounted for the highest prevalence of the disease recorded to date. As many as 374 cases were reporte…

Prognostic significance of quantitative bacteremia in septicemic melioidosis.

Pour-plate blood cultures were performed for 418 adult patients with suspected septicemic melioidosis in order to determine the relationship between quantitative bacterial counts in blood and mortality. Of 108 patients whose hemocultures yielded Burkholderia pseudomallei, 53% had < 10 cfu/mL and 24% had > 100 cfu/mL. High blood bacterial counts were more common than reported previously with regard to other gram-negative septicemias and were significantly associated with the development of hypotension (P = .008) and a fatal outcome (P = .0001). The overall mortality was 63% (95% CI, 53%-72%); h…

Progressive pulmonary venous obstruction and pulmonary interstitial fibrosis associated with tetralogy of Fallot.

Stenosis of individual pulmonary veins is a rare condition associated with a very high mortality. The present report is the first known case of progressive pulmonary venous obstruction associated with the tetralogy of Fallot. This clinical and anatomical study suggests that initial dynamic and possibly reversible occlusion occurs at the junction of the pulmonary vein and left atrium. Anatomical lesions in pulmonary veins then develop, possibly secondary to functional stenosis. The usually fatal outcome of these cases is due to the development of fixed pulmonary venous occlusion and possibly pu…

[Clinical and pathologic-anatomic findings in acute basilar thromboses. A study of 30 autopsy verified cases].

In a retrospective study of 30 cases with fatal basilar artery thrombosis we compared clinical and autopsy findings for clinicopathological correlation. There are only few clinical symptoms which point to a definite localisation and extent of thrombosis or cerebral infarction. In most cases loss of consciousness and hemi- or tetraparesis are due to pontine or mesencephalic infarction. Palsy of the facial nerve suggests infarction of the pons. The incidence of cranial nerve involvement is too low to allow localisation of infarction. There was no case showing infarction of the diencephalon or th

In situ immune response and mechanisms of cell damage in central nervous system of fatal cases microcephaly by Zika virus.

Zika virus (ZIKV) has recently caused a pandemic disease, and many cases of ZIKV infection in pregnant women resulted in abortion, stillbirth, deaths and congenital defects including microcephaly, which now has been proposed as ZIKV congenital syndrome. This study aimed to investigate the in situ immune response profile and mechanisms of neuronal cell damage in fatal Zika microcephaly cases. Brain tissue samples were collected from 15 cases, including 10 microcephalic ZIKV-positive neonates with fatal outcome and five neonatal control flavivirus-negative neonates that died due to other causes,…

EQUAL Candida score, an effective tool for predicting the outcomes of Candida tropicalis candidaemia: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Candida tropicalis is the most common non-albicans Candida species found in Asia-Pacific countries, including Thailand. The pathogen is known for its great virulence, which causes a high case-fatality rate. Associations between case fatality and patient characteristics, infectious disease unit consultation and EQUAL Candida score were investigated. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study was conducted with 160 cases of C. tropicalis bloodstream infection between 2015 and 2019 at a single, large, tertiary centre in Thailand. BACKGROUND: Septicaemia with intravascular haemolysis is a rare, but often fatal, presentation of Clostridium perfringens infection. C. perfringens is a Gram-positive, anaerobic bacterium that can produce multiple toxins. Toxinotyping is not performed regularly. METHODS: This article describes two human cases of C. perfringens infections. Toxinotyping was performed using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Additionally, a structured review of the literature was performed which searched specifically for cases of C. perfringens infection with haemolysis. RESULTS: Both cases were identified as tox

Hemostatic/fibrinolytic protein changes in C3H/HeN mice infected with Rickettsia conorii--a model for Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Changes in plasma hemostatic and fibrinolytic proteins were determined during courses of a murine model of fatal and non-fatal Rocky Mountain spotted fever. C3H/HeN mice were infected with Rickettsia conorii and coagulation and histopathologic studies were performed at prescribed periods of time. A significant decrease in plasma factor VIII activity and rise in plasma factor V procoagulant activity correlated with a fatal infection. Factor VII levels were unchanged; factor XI levels dropped early in the course in the lethally infected animals, but returned to normal. Factor XII, high molecular
