The hydroxylamine-enhanced Fe(II)/peracetic acid (PAA) process is a promising advanced oxidation process (AOP) with the generation of reactive species (RS) including RO•, •OH and Fe(IV). Nevertheless, it is still challenging to identify which RS is the major intermediate oxidant, and the reasons why the optimal condition is pH 4.5 rather than 3.0 are also unclear. Herein, the generation of RS and their contribution to the degradation of three micro-pollutants were explored. The quenching experiments and pseudo first-order kinetic model demonstrated that RO• rather than the other two RS were pr

Iron (Fe) deficiency is one of the most common nutritional disorders, and is mainly due to insufficient intake of bioavailable Fe. Chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) was examined as a potential vehicle for Fe fortification. Fortificants (FeSO4·7H2O (ferrous sulfate hepta-hydrate), FeSO4·H2O (ferrous sulfate mono-hydrate) and NaFeEDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid iron (iii) sodium salt)) were applied by a spraying and drying method. At 2000 µg g-1 iron fortificant, the fortified split desi seeds (dal), desi flour and kabuli flour supplied 18-19 mg, 16-20 mg and 11-19 mg Fe per 100 g, respectivel

Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is the most common nutritional deficiency affecting pregnant women worldwide. This study aims to compare the efficacy and safety of a newly available intravenous (IV) iron preparation, ferric carboxymaltose (FCM), against IV iron polymaltose (IPM), and standard oral iron (ferrous sulphate) for the treatment of IDA in pregnancy. This is an open-labelled prospective randomised controlled trial (RCT) with intention-to-treat analysis conducted at a primary health care facility with a single tertiary referral centre in Launceston. Tasmania, Australia. A 3-arm randomise

Advanced treatment of biologically treated coking wastewater (BTCW) using persulfate (PS) oxidation with magnetic activated carbon composite (CuFe2O4:AC w/w ratio of 1:1.5, denoted as 1.5-MACC) as a green catalyst was evaluated at ambient temperature (30 °C). Effects of PS (K2S2O8) and 1.5-MACC doses on PS decomposition and total organic carbon (TOC) removal in BTCW were also studied during 360 min. The results showed that the 1.5-MACC/PS system has a much better performance on TOC removal in BTCW than only 1.5-MACC or PS system. PS decomposition and TOC removal follow first-order kinetics in

Both monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) and iron accumulation are associated with neurologic diseases including Parkinson's disease. However, the association of iron with MAO-B activity was poorly understood. Here we took advantage of highly sensitive and specific fluorescence probes to examine the change in MAO-B activity in human dopaminergic neuroblastoma (SH-SY5Y) cells upon iron exposure. Both ferric and ferrous ions could significantly enhance the activity of MAO-B, instead of MAO-A, in SH-SY5Y cells. In addition, iron-induced increase in MAO-B probe fluorescence could be prevented by pargyline

A new homogeneous electrochemical immunoassay strategy was developed for ultrasensitive detection of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) based on target-induced proximity hybridization coupled with rolling circle amplification (RCA). The immobilization-free detection of CEA was realized by the use of an uncharged peptide nucleic acid (PNA) probe labeled with ferrocene (Fc) as the electroactive indicator on a negatively charged indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode. In the presence of a target protein and two DNA-labeled antibodies, the proximate complex formed in homogeneous solution could unfold the mo

In this study, we measured the contributions of the ionization of the heme propionates to the reduction potentials of heme b and heme a (bis)N-methylimidazole complexes in various low-dielectric constant conditions. Additionally, we measured the effects of H-bond to the heme a formyl group on the reduction potential of the heme. The performed electrochemical measurements show that ionization of the heme propionates lead to the largest redox change in dichloromethane with no electrolyte. The measured reduction potential changes for heme b and heme a were -55 and -47 mV (±10 mV) per ionized prop

Food fortification with iron is effective in combating iron-deficiency anemia. As iron is reactive, it can destroy micronutrients, contribute to poor taste, and discolor the food. Encapsulation could be used to prevent the reaction of iron with food components. The stability of thiamin (vitamin B1) and its effects on organoleptic properties in Ultra Rice were investigated in the presence of encapsulated ferrous fumarate. The preparation of simulated rice grains did not affect the solubility of encapsulated ferrous fumarate in simulated gastric juice. After 20 weeks at 40 degrees C/ approximate

Complexes that feature a single NO bound to Fe, as postulated in various carboxylate-rich metalloproteins, were prepared by mixing Fe(II) salts, NO, and the sterically encumbered 2,6-dimesitylbenzoate (Mes2ArCO2-). Among the compounds isolated are the potentially useful heterobimetallic synthon Tl(mu-Mes2ArCO2)3Fe(NO) and a novel cubane Fe4(Mes2ArCO2)4(NO)4(mu3-OH)4 that forms in the presence of added H2O and features syn-[FeNO]2 units.

Myeloperoxidase (MPO) (donor, hydrogen peroxide oxidoreductase, EC 1.11.1.7) is the most abundant neutrophil enzyme and catalyzes predominantly the two-electron oxidation of ubiquitous chloride (Cl-), to generate the potent bleaching oxidant hypochlorous acid (HOCl), thus contributing to bacterial killing and inflammatory reactions of neutrophils. Here, the thermodynamics of the one-electron reduction of the ferric heme in its ferric high-spin and cyanide-bound low-spin forms were determined through spectroelectrochemical experiments. The E(o)' values for free and cyanide-bound MPO (5 and -37

Municipal wastewater effluent contains ligands that form Hg(II) complexes that are inert in the presence of glutathione (GSH) during competitive ligand exchange experiments. In this study, the strong ligands in wastewater effluent were further characterized by comparing their behavior with sulfide-containing ligands in model solutions and by measuring their concentration after exposing them to oxidants. The strong Hg(II) complexes in wastewater effluent and the complexes formed when Hg(II) was added to S(-II) were retained during C18 solid-phase extraction (SPE) and did not dissociate in the p

The ability of ferritin as an Fe(II) detoxifier and Fe(III) storage protein is limited by its ability to recognize and incorporate Fe(II), which is then oxidized and mineralized at internal protein sites. The Cr(III) amine complex [Cr(N(CH(2)CH(2)NH(2))(3)(H(2)O)(OH)](2+) [abbreviated as Cr(TREN)] is a kinetically inert inhibitor of iron incorporation and mineralization in ferritin. Unlike other inhibitors, Cr(TREN) can only exchange its two aqua/hydroxy ligands. Competition studies between Cr(TREN) and Tb(III) binding have been performed in horse spleen ferritin (HoSF) to probe uptake of Fe(I

Female Wistar rats with slight iron deficiency anemia were kept on a diet containing 0.5% trimethylhexanoyl (TMH)-ferrocene for up to 79 weeks. In the state of iron deficiency, the heart was free of light-microscopically detectable iron. After 7 weeks of the TMH-ferrocene diet, the first iron-positive granules appeared in perivascular macrophages. Further oral administration caused a progression of iron deposition in these cells, visible in the form of a granular staining but also as a diffuse iron staining of the cytoplasm. Accordingly, at the electron-microscopical level, the iron was stored

1. The feeding of 0.5% (3,5,5-trimethylhexanoyl)ferrocene (TMH-ferrocene) in rats resulted in a severe and progressive liver siderosis (total liver iron, 30 mg/g liver wet weight, after 30 weeks). 2. High concentrations of an iron-rich ferritin (up to 250 mg/l) were detected in serum of heavily iron-loaded rats forming a large fraction of non-transferrin-bound-iron (5000 micrograms/dl in maximum). 3. Ferritin and not haemosiderin was the major iron storage protein in the liver. 4. The total liver iron concentration (from 0.4 to > 30 mg Fe/g wet wt) but not the cytosolic low-molecular-weight-ir

The presence of hydrogen peroxide along with ferrous iron produces hydroxyl radicals that preferably oxidize polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) to alkyl radicals (L•). The reaction of L• with an oxygen molecule produces lipid peroxyl radical (LOO•) that collectively trigger chain reactions, which results in the accumulation of lipid peroxidation products (LOOH). Oxygenase enzymes, such as lipoxygenase, also stimulate the peroxidation of PUFA. The production of phospholipid hydroperoxides (P-LOOH) can result in the destruction of the architecture of cell membranes and ultimate cell death. This

The impact of methoxy and hydroxyl groups at the salicylidene moiety of chlorido[N,N'-bis(methoxy/hydroxy)salicylidene-1,2-bis(4-methoxyphenyl)ethylenediamine]iron(III) complexes was evaluated on human MDA-MB 231 breast cancer and HL-60 leukemia cells. Methoxylated complexes (C1-C3) inhibited proliferation, migration, and metabolic activity in a concentration-dependent manner following the rank order: C2 > C3 > C1. In particular, C2 was highly cytotoxic with an IC50 of 4.2 μM which was 6.6-fold lower than that of cisplatin (IC50 of 27.9 μM). In contrast, hydroxylated complexes C4-C6 were almos

The accumulation of heavy metals in aquatic environments poses critical threats to aquaculture, with iron (Fe) being one of the most prevalent contaminants from industrial and agricultural effluents. This study evaluated the acute toxicity and mechanistic impacts of ferrous sulfate (FeSO₄) on the Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). Acute toxicity tests established the 96-h median lethal concentration (LC₅₀) of Fe at 2.52 mg/L, determined across exposure intervals of 0, 24, 48, 72, and 96-h at nominal concentrations ranging from 0.2, 1.0, 5.0, 25.0, 125.0, and 625.0 mg/L. No mortality

Banded iron formations (BIF) were deposited abundantly between 2.7-2.4 Ga from iron- and silica-rich oceans, with cyanobacterial oxygen (O2) as a possible oxidant for Fe(II)(aq) oxidation and Fe(III) oxyhydroxide precipitation. However, toxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) from Fe(II)/O2 interactions might have inhibited cyanobacterial growth, contributing to the delay between cyanobacterial evolution (>3.0 Ga) and the Great Oxidation Event (2.5 Ga). Here, we explored the impact of Fe(II)(aq) and SiO2(aq) on Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002. High Fe(II)(aq) ( > 500 µM) increased ROS formation, but el
