gamma-Glutamyl transferase and mean cell volume reveal maternal alcohol abuse and fetal alcohol effects.

Serial measurements of gamma-glutamyl transferase and mean cell volume were done in 85 pregnant alcohol abusers (320 samples). These included 26 moderate drinkers, 30 heavy drinkers, and 29 alcoholic women. Studies of 28 pregnant women who denied the use of alcohol (138 samples) showed that pregnancy itself had no effect on gamma-glutamyl transferase and mean cell volume. However, gamma-glutamyl transferase was increased in 14.9%, 31.7% and 59.1% of the samples collected from moderate drinkers, heavy drinkers, and alcoholic women, respectively, and likewise mean cell volume was elevated in 10.

Alcoholism and women.

Alcoholism, the most prevalent form of drug dependence, has become a problem for large numbers of women. The research literature on alcoholism in women is reviewed, with suggestions for treatment and future research. The greater stigma placed upon female intoxication has made it difficult to obtain reliable data and has contributed to the tendency to ignore the problem altogether. Furthermore, the greater stigma has resulted in guilt because the woman alcoholic is likely to share society's opinion of herself, and this stigma/guilt/shame factor is viewed by the authors as one of the main diffic

Morphometry of the neonatal fetal alcohol syndrome face from 'snapshots'.

Recognition of alcohol-related birth defects is less successful in the neonate than in older children. Clarren et al. (1987) were able to describe the geometry of the FAS face at age 7. To define neonatal facial features of FAS, 3 reference points were used to map 7 frontal and 7 profile landmarks coded as standardized cartesian coordinates. These landmarks were digitized from snapshots of 21 neonates, prospectively diagnosed as FAS blinded for prenatal alcohol exposure, and 76 non-FAS controls. In the controls, race was found to be a significant determinant of landmarks, as expected. Using di

Alcoholic liver disease: pathologic, pathogenetic and clinical aspects.

Alcoholic liver disease includes steatosis, alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis. Other liver diseases of genetic origin, but with a curious association with alcohol intake, are hemochromatosis and porphyria cutanea tarda. The attribution of chronic hepatitis to alcohol intake remains speculative, and the association may reflect hepatitis C infection. Hepatic injury attributed to alcohol includes the changes reported in the fetal alcohol syndrome. Steatosis, the characteristic consequence of excess alcohol intake, is usually macrovesicular and rarely microvesicular. Acute intrahepatic cholestasis

Fetal alcohol syndrome and the realities of our time.

A review is provided of the impact of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and the realities of the consumption of alcohol by women. The worldwide incidence of FAS is 1.9 per 1,000 live births. FAS is recognized as the leading cause of mental retardation in the West, in addition to producing a constellation of birth defects. One in six women of childbearing age drinks enough alcohol to jeopardize a developing fetus. Warning labels on alcohol should be considered to publicize the dangers to the fetus.
