A survey was done of the prevalence of dental fluorosis among children aged 7-16 years and the occurrence of skeletal fluorosis among adults aged 40-60 years living in regions in Senegal where fluoride concentrations in the drinking water ranged from less than 0.1 to 7.4 mg/l. Rats were given a single high dose of fluoride at the age of 5 days and killed after 24 h, 10 or 15 days. The maxillary first molars were prepared for scanning electron microscopic examination. It was concluded that a single dose of fluoride, preferentially affecting ameloblasts with a high secretory activity, leads to the formation of subameloblastic cysts and enamel hypoplasias covered with granular deposits.

Triphenyl tin fluoride (TPTF) is a bioactive organo-tin compound used in concentrations 2-12% as anti-foulants in boat paints. The chemical is moderately toxic to the skin. An occupational irritant contact folliculitis from TPTF in a marine paint plant worker is described. Contact allergy was excluded by patch testing. An attempt to reproduce the follicular reaction in man, rabbit and guinea pig was unsuccessful.

Laboratory studies were carried out on a newly conceived fluoride-containing remineralizing system with bovine teeth. The prototype fluoride delivery device involved micronized calcium fluoride maintained at the tooth surface with a cellulose film. Together with salivary calcium and phosphate (or simulated saliva), this system was able to generate and maintain the appropriate thermodynamic activity driving force for significant fluorapatite deposition in a reasonably short time (approximately 48 hr).

The femurs from rats given 120 ppm fluoride in their drinking water for 4 weeks were examined with histological, histochemical, and radiographic methods. The aim of the present study is to determine the influence of iontophoresis on the deposition of fluorine in dental enamel. A micromethod of fluorine-deposition and of dental enamel-sampling was perfected in vitro; it was then applied in vivo. Significant amounts of CaHPO4-2H2O (DCPD) were deposited in tooth enamel by pretreatment with a solution saturated with respect to DCPD. When these enamel samples were treated with a given fluoride solution, the fluoride uptake increased with increasing amounts of DCPD produced by the pretreatment. The interactions between enamel and acidic solutions to yield DCPD can be understood as dissolution-precipitation reactions and analyzed through the use of solubility phase diagrams.
