BACKGROUND: Social care integration refers to the incorporation of activities into health systems that assist patients with health-related social needs (HRSNs) that negatively impact the health outcomes of their patients, such as food insecurity or homelessness. Social care integration initiatives are becoming more common. The COVID-19 pandemic strained health systems while simultaneously increasing levels of unmet social needs.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on established social care delivery in a primary care setting.

BACKGROUND: Compared to heterosexual and cisgender people, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other sexual and gender minority (LGBTQ+) people are more likely to develop problems with high-risk polysubstance use. According to syndemic theory, this disparity in high-risk polysubstance use is produced by the LGBTQ+ community's increased vulnerability to experiencing psychosocial (e.g., discrimination, unwanted sex) and structural (e.g., food insecurity, homelessness) conditions, greater likelihood of coping with concurrent health problems (e.g., human immunodeficiency virus [HIV]), …

Housing insecurity (HI) is inextricably linked to poor health outcomes. Evidence suggests people living with HIV are more likely to experience poor psychological, physical, and nutritional health challenges. However, how housing insecurity might impact treatment outcomes among people living with HIV is under-explored. We examined the consequences of HI on treatment outcomes among people living with HIV in rural Kenya. Between July and August 2023. we purposively recruited and conducted 30 in-depth interviews and four focus group discussions (n = 35) with adult men and women living with HIV. Gu

Although the harms of incarceration on health are well known, little is known about individuals' competing priorities to maintaining their health while on probation and parole after release from incarceration. We explored individuals' competing needs on probation and parole (lack of health insurance/access, hazardous alcohol use, substance use, food insecurity, un/underemployment, housing insecurity, lack of social support, length of recent incarceration, prohibitive monthly fees, criminal legal discrimination) to achieving well-being. We explored overlap between competing needs and overall we…

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) hotspots are defined as countries, regions, communities, or ethnicities with a higher than average incidence of CKD when compared with the worldwide, country, or regional rates. Here, we describe what is known about socially determined CKD hotspots, that is, the burden of CKD among socially defined communities that often collocate geographically. We focus on the poor, the homeless, and the food insecure, and their intersection with other social determinants of health, including race/ethnicity. In addition to discussing the burden of CKD in these communities, we des

Identifying factors associated with alcohol use changes during pregnancy is important for developing interventions for people with HIV (PWH) … associated with lower relative risk of "continued use." Borderline significant associations between food insecurity and higher risk of "new use" and between stigma and reduced likelihood of "quitting" also emerged. Alcohol use interventions that address partnership, food security, and stigma could benefit pregnant and postpartum PWH.

Participant ill health appears to be a primary driver of ED utilization. The findings challenge misconceptions about the appropriateness of ED use …
