Frontoparietal asymmetries leading to conscious perception.

Recent human intracerebral recordings reveal that frontoparietal circuits linked by the superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF) have critical, hemisphere-asymmetric contributions to conscious perception. Right-hemisphere networks are crucial for attention-based prioritization of information; left-hemisphere regions contribute to perceptual decisions and model building. These asymmetries confirm and specify clinical evidence from neglect patients.

EEG Asymmetry Characteristics in Relation to Childhood Anxiety Subtypes: A Dimensional Approach.

Introduction: Right frontal EEG asymmetry has been a commonly neurophysiological marker of anxiety and depressive symptoms throughout development. Method: In the current study, EEG asymmetry measures in frontal and parietal regions were examined as markers for specific subtypes of childhood anxiety disorder (eg, panic, generalized, social, separation, and school avoidance). Results: Notably, panic trait levels were significantly associated with prefrontal and lateral frontal alpha asymmetry, general anxiety was predicted by parietal beta asymmetry measures, and social anxiety levels were assoc

In recent COVID times, mask has been a compulsion at workplaces and institutes as a preventive measure against multiple viral diseases inclu … mperature, and heart rate of both groups were similar. Based on the LDA analysis, the occipital and frontal lobes exhibited the greatest variability in channel measurements, with O1 and O2 channels in the occipital lobe demonstrating significant variations within the alpha band due to visual focus, while the F3, AF3, and F7 channels were found to be differenti …

Anatomy of the temporal lobe: From macro to micro.

The temporal cortex encompasses a large number of different areas ranging from the six-layered isocortex to the allocortex. The areas support auditory, visual, and language processing, as well as emotions and memory. The primary auditory cortex is found at the Heschl gyri, which develop early in ontogeny with the Sylvian fissure, a deep and characteristic fissure that separates the temporal lobe from the parietal and frontal lobes. Gyri and sulci as well as brain areas vary between brains and between hemispheres, partly linked to the functional organization of language and lateralization. Inte…

Spatial and chronic differences in neural activity in medicated and unmedicated schizophrenia patients.

A major caveat with investigations on schizophrenic patients is the difficulty to control for medication usage across samples as disease-related neural differences may be confounded by medication usage. Following a thorough literature search (632 records identified), we included 37 studies with a total of 740 medicated schizophrenia patients and 367 unmedicated schizophrenia patients. Here, we perform several meta-analyses to assess the neurofunctional differences between medicated and unmedicated schizophrenic patients across fMRI studies to determine systematic regions associated with medica

Cortical surface area of the left frontal pole is associated with visuospatial working memory capacity.

Working memory, the ability to maintain and manipulate information over seconds, is central to cognition and it is impaired in many clinical populations. However, our knowledge of the structural properties associated with individual variation in visuospatial working memory capacity is currently poor. Across two locations (Stockholm and Oxford), we examined how regional surface area and cortical thickness in frontal and parietal regions were related to visuospatial working memory capacity. We found a negative association between visuospatial working memory capacity and the surface area of the l

Is tinnitus an acoasm?

Tinnitus and unspecific auditory hallucinations generally known as acoasms arise from identical or at least similar cerebral structures. Both phenomena can be interpreted as signs of an over activation of neuronal networks. Several pieces of evidence to underline this hypothesis as well as its implications are discussed. It is even speculated that both clinical entities might profit from treatment strategies that are normally employed for treatment of the other.

Role of oxidative stress in frontotemporal dementia.

Recent reports have established oxidative stress and damage as playing a role in the pathogenesis of a number of neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, corticobasal degeneration, Pick's disease and Alexander's disease. Here we present evidence that oxidative damage is also one of the earliest cytopathological markers of neuronal dysfunction in frontotemporal dementia.

Frontotemporal dementia: a clinicopathological review of four postmortem studies.

Frontotemporal dementia is a progressive dementing illness characterized clinically by personality change, disinhibition, and apathy. Neuropathologically, neuronal cell loss, astrogliosis, and microvacuolation are present in the superficial frontotemporal cortical layers, with variable involvement of subcortical and limbic structures. The clinical picture and anatomical distribution of the degenerative changes, as well as motor neuron involvement, differentiate four neuropathological groups: 1) frontal lobe type, 2) thalamostriatal type, 3) motor neuron type, and 4) asymmetrical type. The auth…

Multidisciplinary Treatment of a Pediatric Orbital Roof Fracture: Case Report and Literature Review.

Pediatric orbital roof fractures are a relatively rare trauma. In children, fractures of the facial skeleton can be associated with significant morbidity. Potential complications of orbital roof fracture include both neurosurgical complications such as frontal lobe injury, dural tears, or herniation, and ophthalmologic and reconstructive surgery problems such as proptosis, diplopia, and extraocular muscle entrapment. In most cases, surgical intervention is unnecessary, as these fractures are minimally displaced. When surgery is warranted, however, for displaced fractures or those associated wi…

Cortical gyrification in autistic and Asperger disorders: a preliminary magnetic resonance imaging study.

The validity of Asperger disorder as a distinct syndrome from autism is unclear partly because of the paucity of differentiating neurobiological evidence. Frontal lobe cortical folding between these disorders was compared using the gyrification index. Twenty-three boys underwent structural magnetic resonance imaging: 6 with high-functioning autism, 9 with Asperger disorder, and 8 controls. Using the first coronal slice anterior to the corpus callosum, total and outer cortical contours were traced to calculate the gyrification index. This index was also calculated for superior and inferior regi…

Late-onset neuropsychological symptoms in a Japanese patient with megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts.

We herein report a Japanese patient with megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts (MLC) who developed late-onset neuropsyc … erbal abilities had degraded during the past 14 years. Higher cortical dysfunction tests revealed a frontal lobe dysfunction. On repeated brain MRI, a leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts remained stationary from infancy. On single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), a hypoperfusion in the frontal lobe was detected at the age of 3.5 and 17, but …
