Clinical evaluation of dynamic [18F]FDG PET imaging to distinguish infection from inflammation in fracture-related infections.

BACKGROUND: Standard [18F]FDG PET/CT is widely used to detect infections, but is limited in differentiating bacterial infection from inflammation due to overlapping uptake patterns. This distinction is particularly challenging in fracture-related infection (FRI), due to multiple factors, including recent surgery, soft tissue injury, fracture healing, and surgical implants. Dynamic [18F]FDG imaging over time may overcome this limitation by capturing a rapid, sustained uptake seen in infections, driven by ongoing immune and microbial activity, as opposed to the potentially slower uptake in infla

Desmosterolosis-phenotypic and molecular characterization of a third case and review of the literature.

Desmosterolosis, a rare disorder of cholesterol biosynthesis, is caused by mutations in DHCR24, the gene encoding the enzyme 24-dehydrocholesterol reductase (DHCR24). To date, desmosterolosis has been described in only two patients. Here we report on a third patient with desmosterolosis who presented after delivery with relative macrocephaly, mild arthrogryposis, and dysmorphic facial features. Brain MRI revealed hydrocephalus, thickening of the tectum and massa intermedia, mildly effaced gyral pattern, underopercularization, and a thin corpus callosum. The diagnosis of desmosterolosis was est

Who are "the homeless"? Reconsidering the stability and composition of the homeless population.

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the extent to which the use of point-prevalence samples biases conclusions drawn about homeless people. METHODS: Three data sets and published research were used to examine the degree to which conditions leading to point-prevalence bias (turnover in the homeless population, variability in the persistence of homelessness, and associations between personal characteristics and persistence) characterize the homeless population. Results were compared from point-prevalence studies concerning persistence of homelessness and characteristics of homeless people with thos

A prospective study of the consequences of marital disruption for adolescents: predisruption family dynamics and postdisruption adolescent adjustment.

This study employed data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health to examine the consequences of marital disruption for youth prospectively. Using a diverse sample of 6,416 youth, we examined pre- and postdisruption group differences among youth in subsequently disrupting and continuously intact homes. We also examined the extent to which predisruption family dynamics (e.g., marital discord) accounted for both pre- and postdisruption group differences in youth functioning and examined the interaction between level of marital discord and marital disruption. Group differences in

[Relationship of eicosanoids to cellular and humoral immunity factors in meningococcal infection].

The dynamics of the content of thromboxane B2, 6-keto-prostaglandin F1 alpha, T- and B-lymphocytes and titers of antibodies to group polysaccharides of meningococci, groups A, B and C, have been studied in 44 patients with generalized forms of meningococcal infection. As shown in this study, in patients with the clinical course of moderate severity a decrease in the number of T-lymphocytes in the first days of infection correlates with a decrease in the concentration of thromboxane B2. In some cases the concentration of thromboxane B2 and 6-keto-prostaglandin F1 alpha has been found to correla

The Use of EEG in the Study of Emotional States and Visual Word Recognition with or Without Musical Stimulus in University Students with Dyslexia.

This study investigated neural oscillatory dynamics underlying visual word recognition in university students with dyslexia using a portable brain-computer interface (BCI) EEG system. The sample included university students with dyslexia (N = 12) and matched controls (N = 14) who completed auditory discrimination and visual word recognition tasks, with and without musical accompaniment. Through these experimental conditions, the researchers assessed (a) the cortical activation across frequency bands, (b) the modulatory effect of background music, and (c) the relationship between emotional stat

Prevalence of dyssynergic defecation in children with constipation evaluated by high-resolution anorectal manometry.

Dyssynergic defecation, defined as the incoordination of rectoanal and abdominal muscles and the pelvic floor which are necessary for the appropriate relaxation, is characterized by paradoxical anal contraction, inadequate anal relaxation, or abnormal rectal propulsion; it is considered a cause of refractory primary constipation. The prevalence of dyssynergic defecation in the pediatric age is still little known. The studies that have evaluated the defecation dynamics through anorectal manometry suggest that 36.8% to 80.9% of children with functional constipation (FC) present dyssynergic defec

Dynamics of impaired humour processing in schizophrenia - An EEG effective connectivity study.

Specific language and communication abilities, such as humour comprehension, are commonly impaired in schizophrenia. The present study investigates the dynamics of the humour-related neural network underlying this deficit. Specifically, we focused on the abnormalities of information flow in schizophrenia within the fronto-temporo-parietal circuit. We estimated the direction and strength of cortical information flow in the time course of humour processing by the EEG Directed Transfer Function. The study included 40 schizophrenia outpatients and 40 healthy controls (age-sex-education matched) as

Compensatory strategies during manual wheelchair propulsion in response to weakness in individual muscle groups: A simulation study.

BACKGROUND: The considerable physical demand placed on the upper extremity during manual wheelchair propulsion is distributed among individual muscles. The strategy used to distribute the workload is likely influenced by the relative force-generating capacities of individual muscles, and some strategies may be associated with a higher injury risk than others. The objective of this study was to use forward dynamics simulations of manual wheelchair propulsion to identify compensatory strategies that can be used to overcome weakness in individual muscle groups and identify specific strategies tha

Echinococcus multilocularis infection in the field vole (Microtus agrestis): an ecological model for studies on transmission dynamics.

We propose a model involving the oral inoculation of Echinococcus multilocularis eggs in a vole species and examine the infection dynamics in a dose-response experiment. Defined doses, 100 (n = 8), 500 (n = 5) and 1000 (n = 5) of E. multilocularis eggs were used to inoculate Microtus agrestis. Four female C57BL/6j mice were inoculated with 1000 eggs as positive controls. The groups inoculated with 100 and 500 eggs exhibited significantly higher lesion numbers, and relatively smaller lesion size was observed in the 1000 dose group. Undetectable abortive lesions may be responsible for some form

Intrinsically disordered regions may lower the hydration free energy in proteins: a case study of nudix hydrolase in the bacterium Deinococcus radiodurans.

The proteome of the radiation- and desiccation-resistant bacterium D. radiodurans features a group of proteins that contain significant intrinsically disordered regions that are not present in non-extremophile homologues. Interestingly, this group includes a number of housekeeping and repair proteins such as DNA polymerase III, nudix hydrolase and rotamase. Here, we focus on a member of the nudix hydrolase family from D. radiodurans possessing low-complexity N- and C-terminal tails, which exhibit sequence signatures of intrinsic disorder and have unknown function. The enzyme catalyzes the hydr

Functional Connectivity Dynamics Altered of the Resting Brain in Subjective Cognitive Decline.

BACKGROUND: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) appears in the preclinical stage of the Alzheimer's disease continuum. In this stage, dynamic features are more sensitive than static features to reflect early subtle changes in functional brain connectivity. Therefore, we studied local and extended dynamic connectivity of the resting brain of people with SCD to determine their intrinsic brain changes. METHODS: We enrolled cognitively normal older adults from the communities and divided them into SCD and normal control (NC) groups. We used mean dynamic amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (mdAL

A computational investigation of PFAS dimer interaction energies.

Starting from the late 1930s, per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have had a long history of use. Long thought to be safe for use in commercial and industrial applications, they have recently been recognized as a contaminant of concern with an urgent need for remediation technologies. However, this is a challenging problem as the molecular forces that govern PFAS interactions are poorly understood. Thus, in this study we seek to understand these forces and how they influence PFAS-PFAS aggregation in the presence of an aqueous environment. Using a combination of molecular dynamics simul

Dynamics of slow wave sleep in advanced Parkinson's disease: An entropy-based study.

Parkinson's disease (PD) can progress to an advanced stage characterized by motor fluctuations and or levodopa-induced dyskinesia (LID). Although both motor fluctuations and LID reflect altered dopaminergic reactivity, LID has been specifically linked to disrupted synaptic plasticity. Slow wave sleep (N3) reflects homeostatic processes and may offer neurophysiological markers related to the motor phenotype in PD. This study tested whether overnight dynamics of N3 slow-wave activity (SWA) and cortical complexity, i.e., sample entropy (SampEn) differ between PD patients with and without dyskines
