Impact of nutrition on the condition of the oral mucosa and periodontium: A narrative review.

Diet and eating habits significantly affect health and quality of life. Various diets and food eliminations can lead to nutritional deficien … d bleeding, recurrent aphthous stomatitis, enamel hypomineralization, cheilitis, angular cheilitis, halitosis, glossitis, lingual papillae atrophy, and stomatitis. Malnutrition does not cause periodontal disease, but it increases the risk of its occurrence and accelerates disease progression. Inadequate nutrition, combined with other predisposing factors, m …

Simple and Sensitive Detection of Bacterial Hydrogen Sulfide Production Using a Paper-Based Colorimetric Assay.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is known to participate in bacteria-induced inflammatory response in periodontal diseases. Therefore, it is necessary to quantify H2S produced by oral bacteria for diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases including halitosis and periodontal disease. In this study, we introduce a paper-based colorimetric assay for detecting bacterial H2S utilizing silver/Nafion/polyvinylpyrrolidone membrane and a 96-well microplate. This H2S-sensing paper showed a good sensitivity (8.27 blue channel intensity/μM H2S, R2 = 0.9996), which was higher than that of lead acetate paper (6.05 blu…

Management of Zenker's diverticulum using flexible endoscopy.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Zenker's diverticulum is a false diverticulum through Killian's dehiscence. Symptoms include halitosis, dysphagia, regurgitation, cough, and aspiration pneumonia. Treatment options include open transcervical cricopharyngeal myotomy, trans-oral rigid endoscopic stapling, and minimally invasive endoscopic myotomy. Although open surgical techniques have historically been the criterion standard for treatment, endoscopic options have become increasingly used. We propose the use of flexible endoscopy in the management of Zenker's diverticulum. METHODS: We present a retrospectiv…

Coblation: improving outcomes for children following adenotonsillectomy.

Tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, 2 of the most common childhood surgeries, are performed for a number of indications, the most common being airway obstruction caused by adenotonsillar hypertrophy. Other indications for tonsillectomy include recurrent pharyngotonsillitis, streptococcal carriage, recurrent peritonsillar abscess, halitosis, and presumed neoplasia. Although adenotonsillar surgery is a safe and effective technique for treating disease and obstruction, parents remain concerned about postoperative morbidity, for which the potential is much greater after tonsillectomy than adenoidecto…

Oral myiasis in a maxillofacial trauma patient.

Myiasis is a rare disease primarily caused by the invasion of tissue by larvae of certain dipteran flies. Oral myiasis is still more "rare" and "unique" owing to the fact that oral cavity rarely provides the necessary habitat conducive for a larval lifecycle. Common predisposing factors are poor oral hygiene, halitosis, trauma, senility, learning disabilities, physically and mentally challenged conditions. Oral myiasis can lead to rapid tissue destruction and disfigurement and requires immediate treatment. Treatment consists of manual removal of maggots from the oral cavity after application o…

Antibiotic use in tonsillectomies: therapeutic or prophylactic? Required or excessive?

Adenotonsillectomy is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the pediatric and young adult populations. The postoperative morbidity of this surgical procedure is often significant, including odynophagia, dysphagia, fever, halitosis, loss of weight and reduced oral intake. After tonsillectomy, with or without adenoidectomy, the colonization of the open tonsillar fossae by the bacterial population of the oral cavity would cause an exacerbation of the local inflammatory response worsening postoperative pain. The hypothesis that a reduction of the bacterial population of an open surgical …

Counseling and treating bad breath patients: a step-by-step approach.

Bad breath (oral malodor, halitosis) can be detrimental to one's self-image and confidence causing social, emotional, and psychological anxiety. With the majority of breath problems having an oral origin, the dental office is the most logical place for patients to seek treatment. When patients look to dental professionals for expert advice, it is critical they have the knowledge base and communication techniques to provide quality clinical assessment and implement effective intervention programs. Moreover, dental professionals should feel comfortable proactively counseling patients about oral …

Public health aspects of periodontal diseases in Europe.

There is relatively little severe periodontal disease in populations in Europe. The public health significance is therefore debateable. The fact that the costs of treating the disease are high because of the organization of dental care, qualifies it as a dental public problem. In addition, the symptoms of periodontal diseases such as bleeding, halitosis, gingival recession and tooth loss have an impact on many people, and we have sufficient information to control the common forms of the disease. The goals for dental health can be expressed in terms of health, disease, health education and heal…

Effect of different mouthrinses on morning breath.

BACKGROUND: Morning breath odor is an often-encountered complaint. This double-blind, crossover, randomized study aimed to examine the bad breath-inhibiting effect of 3 commercially available mouthrinses on morning halitosis during an experimental period of 12 days without mechanical plaque control. METHODS: Twelve medical students with a healthy periodontium refrained from all means of mechanical plaque control during 3 experimental periods of 12 days (with intervening washout periods of at least 3 weeks). A professional oral cleaning preceded each period. During each experimental period, as…

[A PhD completed. Prevention and treatment of periodontal diseases and bad breath].

Rinsing the mouth with water, or brushing with a dry toothbrush, does not contribute to an improvement in plaque removal during toothbrushing, nor does brushing according to a specific brushing regimen. Rinsing with water or drinking water has an immediate effect on bad morning breath. The combination of toothbrushing, tongue cleaning and a mouthwash has an effect on bad morning breath after 24 hours, in contrast with brushing with toothpaste only. The use of mouthwash with the specific ingredients chlorhexidine and essential oils has a positive effect on the reduction of gingivitis. The use o

Effect of red dyes on blue light phototoxicity against VSC producing bacteria in an experimental oral biofilm.

Oral malodour is considered to be caused mainly by the production of volatile sulfide compounds (VSC) by anaerobic Gram-negative oral bacteria. Previous study showed that these bacteria were susceptible to blue light (wavelengths of 400-500 nm). In the present study, we tested the effect of blue light in the presence of red dyes on malodour production in an experimental oral biofilm. Biofilms were exposed to a plasma-arc light source for 30, 60, and 120 s (i.e. fluences of 41, 82, and 164 J cm-2, respectively) with the addition of erythrosine, natural red and rose bengal (0.01, 0.1 and 1% w/v)

Allyl isothiocyanate from mustard seed is effective in reducing the levels of volatile sulfur compounds responsible for intrinsic oral malodor.

Oral malodor is a major social and psychological issue that affects general populations. Volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), particularly hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) and methyl mercaptan (CH₃SH), are responsible for most oral malodor. The objectives for this study were to determine whether allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) at an organoleptically acceptable level can eliminate VSCs containing a free thiol moiety and further to elucidate the mechanism of action and reaction kinetics. The study revealed that gas chromatograph with a sulfur detector demonstrated a good linearity, high accuracy and sensitivity
