Relationship between hand hygiene and cutaneous findings during COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: In the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers (HCWs) have to comply with hygiene conditions and use gloves more frequently and for a longer period of time than they would previously to avoid infection and prevent transmission. AIMS: We aimed to characterize the adverse skin reactions occurring after hand hygiene and glove use in HCWs in a tertiary university hospital to determine the possible causative factors and whether the use of these measures is affected. METHODS: Between April 15 and May 1, 2020, a cross-sectional survey was conducted, using online q

Irritant hand dermatitis in health care workers.

BACKGROUND: Health care workers (HCWs) are at increased risk of irritant contact dermatitis due to frequent hand washing and use of alcohol gel. This has increased the incidence of occupational skin diseases. AIMS: To evaluate hand dermatitis in HCWs in our hospital by means of a survey which also examined trends of exposure and the utility of patch testing. METHODS: HCWs diagnosed with hand dermatitis in our contact dermatitis clinic from January 2011 to July 2012 were included. Information was collected retrospectively from medical notes, computer records and the database of the British Cu

Development of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for detection of circulating IgG autoantibodies against canine desmoglein 3 in dogs with pemphigus.

Pemphigus, a group of autoimmune blistering dermatoses recognized in humans and dogs, is divided into three subgroups: pemphigus vulgaris (PV), pemphigus foliaceus (PF) and paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP). Previously, we have demonstrated that circulating anti-desmoglein 3 (Dsg3) IgG in dogs with PV and PNP disrupts Dsg3-mediated keratinocyte cell-cell adhesion. The aim of this study was to develop an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of circulating IgG against canine Dsg3 in dogs with pemphigus. A secreted form of recombinant protein representing the entire extracellu

Koebner phenomenon induced by the use of a computer mouse in an occupational setting: case report.

Occupational activities are well-known triggers for the onset or aggravation of several dermatoses. The Koebner phenomenon is characterized by the appearance of cutaneous lesions typical of a given inflammatory dermatosis in an area where the skin was injured by mechanical, chemical, or biological agents. Although it is usually easily identified when associated to significant trauma, the Koebner phenomenon may go unnoticed when a small-scale injury underlies its pathogenesis. Herein, we report a case of Koebner phenomenon induced by the repetitive use of a computer mouse in an occupational set

A new target of percutaneus sympathic radiofrequency thermocoagulation for treatment of palmar hyperhidrosis: T4.

OBJECTIVES: Hyperhidrosis is thought to result from a functional impairment of the sympathic nervous system. In this study, percutaneous T4 sympathic radiofrequency (RF) thermocoagulation was used to treat palmar hyperhidrosis which does not respond to conservative treatment. The results were evaluated in terms of safety, efficiency and patient satisfaction. METHODS: In this study, 15 patients aged 16-48 years were retrospectively evaluated from prior records. Patient satisfaction scores (very satisfied, satisfied, not satisfied), after treatment of the hand condition (dry, mild dry, no impro

[Diabetic hand syndrome in juvenile diabetics].

247 patients with juvenile diabetes mellitus, aged 3-37 years, were examined for diabetic hand syndrome. 68 (27%) had 1 or more of the manifestations of diabetic hand syndrome. In 45 (18%) flexion contractures were found, 41 (17%) had skin changes resembling those of scleroderma and digital sclerosis, and 12 (5%) suffered from trigger finger. We found an association between diabetic hand syndrome and diabetes control as evaluated by serial levels of hemoglobin A1c measured during the years of follow-up. A high relative risk for microvascular complications was found in those who had diabetic ha

Occupational Dermatoses Related to Personal Protective Equipment Used During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The recent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to the dramatic increase in use of personal protective equipment (PPE) among health care providers and the general public. Herein the authors discuss the various occupational dermatoses including allergic and irritant contact dermatitis, acne, seborrheic dermatitis, and rosacea related to frequent handwashing, disinfecting of surfaces, and prolonged wear of various PPE including face masks, gloves, and gowns. The authors provide an overview of published PPE-associated occupational dermatoses during the COVID-19 pandemic and also d

Allergic and photoallergic contact dermatitis to chlorpromazine.

Chlorpromazine is known to produce both systemic phototoxic and photoallergic reactions. However, it may also cause photoallergic contact dermatitis and, albeit exceptionally, allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). We present a series of photoallergic contact dermatitis and ACD to chlorpromazine diagnosed at a tertiary centre cutaneous allergy unit between 1980 and 2019.

Symmetrical acral keratoderma revisited: proposal for a new term, 'pigmented carpotarsal hyperkeratosis'.

First reported from Taiwan mistakenly as acral acanthosis nigricans in 1991, pigmented carpotarsal hyperkeratosis or hyperkeratosis nigricans carpi et tarsi displays a peculiar distribution of velvety brown-grey hyperpigmented plaques symmetrically on the flexural side of the wrists and ankles and on the dorsal sides of the hands and feet. A marked epidermal hyperkeratosis with typically mild acanthosis and papillomatosis is observed in histology. Whitish maceration upon perspiration or water exposure, with exacerbation in summer but remission in winter, is common. The association with obesity

Lichen planus-like drug reaction associated with recombinant human growth hormone therapy in a child patient with Turner syndrome.

Turner syndrome (TS) is a genetic disease with an incidence rate of between 1:2000 and 1:5000 live female births. The treatment of TS differs according to age and Recombinant Human Growth Hormone (RHGH) therapy is usually given for the treatment of short stature in girls with TS in childhood. We describe the first case of a TS patient who presented with a clinical picture compatible with oral and palmoplantar lichen planus-like reaction during RHGH therapy; spontaneous remission occurred after therapy suspension.

Epidermal barrier abnormalities in exfoliative ichthyosis with a novel homozygous loss-of-function mutation in CSTA.

Autosomal recessive exfoliative ichthyosis (AREI) results from mutations in CSTA, encoding cysteine protease inhibitor A (cystatin A). We present a 25-year-old man from Iran with consanguineous parents, who presented with congenital erythroderma, hyperhidrosis and diffuse hyperkeratosis with coarse palmoplantar peeling of the skin, aggravated by exposure to water and by occlusion. Candidate gene analysis revealed a previously unknown homozygous loss-of-function mutation c.172C>T (p.Arg58Ter) in CSTA, and immunostaining showed absence of epidermal cystatin A, confirming the diagnosis of AREI. Palmoplantar nonpustular psoriasiform dermatitis in a rhesus macaque.

A case of psoriasiform dermatitis in an adult male rhesus macaque is reported. Appearing spontaneously, the condition presented the clinical and histopathological features of human palmoplantar nonpustular psoriasis. The animal developed multiple scaly plaques on his palms and soles, as well as nail hyperkeratosis and widening of the nail root. Microscopically, the skin lesions showed epidermal hyperkeratosis with multifocal parakeratosis, neutrophil microabscesses in the stratum corneum, a loss of granule cell layer under the microabscesses, acanthosis, and elongation of the rete ridges; the
