Probabilistic models of motorcyclists' injury severities in single- and multi-vehicle crashes.

Motorcycle fatalities have more than doubled in the United States since 1997--highlighting the need to better understand the many interrelated factors that determine motorcyclists' crash-injury severities. In this paper, using a detailed crash database from the state of Indiana, we estimate probabilistic models of motorcyclists' injury severities in single- and multi-vehicle crashes. Nested logit (estimated with full information maximum likelihood) and standard multinomial logit model results show a wide-range of factors significantly influence injury-severity probabilities. Key findings show

Endoscopic-assisted repair of craniosynostosis.

OBJECT: The goal of the craniofacial surgeon has always been the correction of form and function with prevention of associated morbidity and death. Through the pioneering work of Jimenez and Barone, minimally invasive approaches to the surgical correction of craniosynostosis are now gaining wider acceptance. Here the authors review the technique for endoscopic-assisted repair of craniosynostosis from the perspective of a new minimally invasive approach. They also assess the safety, efficacy, and results of the early treatment of infants with craniosynostosis in a small series of children who u

The child as a projectile.

Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death in children under the age of fourteen. The majority of these injuries/deaths occur when the child becomes airborne during an accident. The most common mechanisms by which children become airborne are motor vehicle collisions, bicycling accidents, and falls. A head injury is seen in a significant number of children in this setting. This includes injury to the scalp, skull, coverings of the brain, or the brain itself. These injuries are the most common cause of death in children resulting from unintentional injury. Other typical injuries include

Effects of rectilinear acceleration, caloric and optokinetic stimulation of human subjects in the Spacelab D-1 mission.

A set of vestibular experiments was performed during the course of the German Spacelab D-1 mission from 30 October to 6 November 1985 by a consortium of experimenters from various european countries. Similar to the Spacelab SL-1 mission all of the scientific crew members were theoretically and practically trained for the experiments. Baseline measurements for all tests were collected 113, 86, 44, 30 and 18 days prior to the mission and compared with data taken inflight, on the landing day and the consecutive 7 to 14 days. The hardware comprised mainly a motordriven accelerating platform, the S

Consent and the use of Foley catheters in epistaxis.

The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency stated in 2003 that doctors should endeavour to avoid using products in treatments not covered by their product licence. Foley catheters are commonly used in the management of epistaxis although their product licence does not cover this. We undertook a questionnaire survey of members of the British Association of Otorhinolaryngologists--Head & Neck Surgeons to study the extent of the use of these catheters and the knowledge that members had of their legal status. Most members appear to use Foley catheters in the management of epistaxis; h

Involvement of Nrf-2/HO-1 pathway in sevoflurane-induced cognitive improvement in rats with traumatic brain injury.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an increasingly common emergency disease that usually leads to prolonged physical and cognitive impairments. In this study, we investigated if sevoflurane could induce cognitive improvement in TBI rats. Rats were subjected to head trauma induced by a fluid percussion device. A two-hour exposure to 3% sevoflurane was performed in a chamber immediately after TBI. Sevoflurane inhalation reduced the neurological and cognitive deficits induced by TBI with ameliorated synaptic injuries in the hippocampus. Moreover, after sevoflurane treatment, the expression of nuclea

Intraoral radiation stents-Primer for clinical use in head and neck cancer therapy.

Intraoral radiation stents (IRS) are prosthetic devices that assist in the effective delivery of radiation to tumor tissues and aim to avoid unnecessary radiation to adjacent healthy tissues, thus limiting postradiotherapy toxicities. They are used to protect or displace vital structures, assist in positioning of the treatment beam for effective administration of radiotherapy, carry a radioactive material, shield healthy tissues of the oral cavity, and/or maintain the desired mouth opening during radiotherapy. With close collaboration between radiation oncologist and oral health care provider,

Initial experience with a novel device for supporting a debilitated patient during total skin electron beam therapy.

Total skin electron beam therapy (TSET) is the specialized and effective therapy for mycosis fungoides and Sézary syndrome. The Stanford TSET technique, which is the one most often used, requires the patient to remain standing for an extended time. Here, we report on the invention of a device to assist in patient positioning for TSET and how the device is used in clinical care. Our novel device comprises supports for the patient's head and upper limbs plus a bicycle-style saddle seat. We used the device during delivery of TSET for Sézary syndrome in a 30-year-old woman. Radiation was delivered

Differential shock transmission response of the human body to impact severity and lower limb posture.

The shocks imparted to the foot during locomotion may lead to joint-degenerative diseases and jeopardize the visual-vestibular functions. The body relies upon several mechanisms and structures that have unique viscoelastic properties for shock attenuation. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether impact severity and initial knee angle (IKA) could alter the shock transmission characteristics of the body. Impacts were administered to the right foot of 38 subjects with a human pendulum device. Combinations of velocities (0.9, 1.05 and 1.2 m s-1) and surfaces (soft and hard foams)

Symptomatic manifestations of SARS-CoV-2 and household economic responses in the context of partial lockdown: an analysis based on Cameroonian household survey data.

This article analyzes the economic responses of household heads confronted with SARS-CoV-2 symptoms during the partial lockdown period imposed in Cameroon in 2020. By isolating the specific effect of the individual symptomatic shock from that of general health restrictions, it fills a gap that the literature on the economic effects of COVID-19 has not yet directly addressed. The data come from a household survey conducted in Cameroon, and five economic responses are analyzed, namely over-indebtedness, active occupational mobility, and reductions in health, education, and sanitary protection ex
