Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of preventable illness and death in the United States. Smoking and mental illness are often comorbid, yet little is known about mental health patients' perceptions, knowledge, and use of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). ENDS may be a beneficial short-term intervention to help this group quit smoking. A survey was administered to a sample of patients at an adult outpatient mental health office (N = 109, 45% male, mean age 33). The majority of participants had tried ENDS. Most used ENDS to quit smoking, and believed it was less harmful than smokin

BACKGROUND: Currently, 28 states and the District of Columbia have legalized cannabis for medical use despite its remaining Schedule I federally. Benefits of medical cannabis (MC) have been demonstrated in nausea/vomiting associated with chemotherapy, cachexia associated with HIV/AIDS, and certain types of neuropathic pain. However, it is unclear how comfortable hospice providers are with the concept of MC.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine changes in knowledge, self-perceived skills, and attitudes (KSA) of hospice providers regarding MC after an online educational intervention

This study assessed the knowledge, attitude, and compliance to immunization guidelines among dental health-care professionals in Italy. A questionnaire was mailed to a random sample of 1000 dentists on demographic and professional characteristics; knowledge regarding infectious diseases that can be acquired/transmitted by the dentist and the vaccinations recommended; attitudes regarding the vaccinations; self-assessed information about previous vaccinations. A total of 369 dentists responded. Only 44.1 and 32.4% correctly indicated all infections that can be acquired or transmitted during thei

BACKGROUND: The public health system continues its efforts to prepare for bioterrorist events, such as a smallpox outbreak, but may need to call on other health professionals to ensure sufficient capacity to implement preparedness plans.
OBJECTIVE: The goal was to understand the willingness of primary care physicians to participate in possible smallpox pre- or post-event activities.
METHODS: A 23-question mail survey was sent to a national random sample of 727 internists and 720 family physicians. After three mailings, a one-page version of the survey was sent to nonrespondents.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a collection of inherited blood disorders that affect a substantial number of people in the U.S., particularly African Americans. People with SCD have an abnormal type of hemoglobin, Hb S, which polymerizes when deoxygenated, causing the red blood cells to become misshapen and rigid. Individuals with SCD are at higher risk of morbidity and mortality from infections, vaso-occlusive pain crises, acute chest syndrome, and other complications. Addressing the public health needs related to SCD is an important step toward improving outcomes and maintaining health for tho

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Poultry farming is a significant source of food worldwide; however, irrational antimicrobial use has contributed to antimicrobial resistance (AMR), posing a serious threat to humans, animals, and the environment. Despite this growing concern, the level of knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of poultry farm workers regarding antimicrobial use and resistance remains poorly understood in eastern Ethiopia. Therefore, this study aimed to assess poultry farm workers' KAP toward antimicrobial use and resistance, and to identify associated factors.

The opposition to vaccinations is a well-known phenomenon that dates back to the Victorian age when it was self-limited by the awareness of the importance to be protected against fearsome infectious diseases. In the XX century, the mass use of vaccination has - instead - consented to eradicate or drastically reduce the burden of diseases such as smallpox and polio. These positive effects of the vaccination campaigns have blurred out, if not erased, the memory of the tragic consequences of the past's widespread diseases, leading people to underestimate the severity of the harm that vaccinations

BACKGROUND: Healthcare-associated infections are a significant burden in the Western Pacific Region, where diverse healthcare systems face challenges from emerging infectious diseases. Standard precautions form the basis of safe healthcare, and healthcare workers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices are critical to effective infection prevention. Evidence shows significant gaps in compliance, with rates varying across countries and settings. This scoping review aimed to map the evidence base, identify gaps, and inform policy and capacity-building initiatives for low- and middle-income Pacific

Education about dengue disease is fundamental for its prevention. However, the most effective methods for delivering this knowledge in schools remain unclear. In this study, we compared two widely used educational interventions on their effectiveness in increasing dengue knowledge. A cluster-randomized controlled trial, with pre- and post-evaluations was applied. Three hundred ninety 10-year-old children from primary schools in a low-socioeconomic status area of Argentina that is endemic for dengue, were assigned to one of three groups: workshop, an abbreviated workshop, or direct instruction.

BACKGROUND: Childhood vaccine hesitancy is a significant public health concern. In Nigeria, it remains a major barrier to achieving optimal immunization uptake, contributing to preventable morbidity and mortality. Yet there remains a significant research gap on the synthesis of health communication strategies to address parental hesitancy to childhood vaccination. The primary aim and original contribution of the present review is to synthesize health communication strategies to address parental hesitancy to childhood vaccination in Nigeria.
METHOD: The review strategy was underpinned by the P

The Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U) message is a cornerstone of HIV-related public health communication, yet global levels of awareness and acceptance remain unclear across key populations. This study aimed to assess the global prevalence of awareness and acceptance of the U=U message among men who have sex with men (MSM), people living with HIV (PLWH), healthcare professionals, and the general population. A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted using data from PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar without language restrictions through 31 October 2023. Eligible studies included p

Breast cancer knowledge and the practice of breast self-examination among school students are crucial topics in health education due to the high incidence rate. However, there is little research on this subject. This systematic review aims to synthesize the empirical literature on the topic, analyzing and identifying patterns in the learning strategies and evaluation methodologies used. A systematic search, following the PRISMA method across the Scopus, Web of Science, and ERIC databases, found only six studies published between 2000 and 2021 that focused on school education. The results revea

HIV competence, encompassing knowledge, skills, attitudes, and practices to prevent, manage, and reduce HIV impact, is critical for meeting young people's HIV prevention and care needs. This study evaluated the effect of the Community of Practice on HIV (CoP-HIV) educational intervention on staff HIV competence and prevention knowledge in Ugandan schools, where HIV prevalence is rising among youth. Using a stepped-wedge cluster randomized trial, the intervention was implemented across six schools in western Uganda (March-September 2023). It included two eight-hour workshops and a handbook on H

BACKGROUND: Sexual abuse is a significant public health issue, particularly during childhood, with profound negative effects on children, families, and society. Children with visual impairment face a heightened risk of abuse due to their reliance on tactile perception to navigate their environment and their limited ability to discern appropriate from inappropriate touch. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of nurse-led body protection education on the sexual abuse knowledge levels of students with visual impairments. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial with pre-test, post-test, and foll

Individuals with skin of color (SOC) can sunburn and develop skin cancer, often presenting at advanced stages with higher morbidity and melanoma-related mortality. However, patient education on photoprotection for SOC populations remains limited. This scoping review investigated the benefits of photoprotection and the factors influencing sun protective behaviors in SOC populations. EMBASE, MEDLINE, and PubMed were searched from January 1st, 2018 to December 31st, 2022, using the overarching terms of "SOC," "skin cancer," and "photoprotection." Original, English-language studies were included,

Understanding health-seeking behavior toward dengue fever is crucial for early diagnosis and timely treatment to mitigate fatal outcomes. In this paper, a concept analysis based on Walker and Avant's method was performed to define health-seeking behaviors regarding dengue fever. This behavior was defined as a series of actions increasing awareness, promoting preventive measures, facilitating informed health decisions, and ensuring timely access to medical care. This concept analysis clarified how awareness, preventive measures, and access to care influence health-seeking behaviors. Our analysi

Dengue vaccines face significant challenges, including safety concerns, which contribute to vaccine hesitancy. Addressing this complex issue requires targeted strategies to overcome existing barriers. Through an extensive review of current evidence, we identified key factors contributing to vaccine hesitancy and explored strategies to enhance global vaccine uptake. Four conceptual models and five assessment tools were identified to understand and measure vaccine hesitancy. Among the factors, "confidence" emerged as the most influential, followed by "complacency." Vaccine acceptance rates varie
