Cardiovascular adjustments during anticipated postural changes.

It is well-documented that feedforward cardiovascular responses occur at the onset of exercise, but it is unclear if such responses are associated with other types of movements. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that feedforward cardiovascular responses occur when a passive (imposed) 60° head-up tilt is anticipated, such that changes in heart rate and carotid artery blood flow (CBF) commence prior to the onset of the rotation. A light cue preceded head-up tilts by 10 sec, and heart rate and CBF were determined for 5-sec time periods prior to and during tilts. Even after these stimuli wer

[HOMOCYSTEINE AS A PROGNOSTIC MARKER OF ATRIAL REMODELING AND CLINICAL PICTURE IN PATIENTS WITH PAROXYSMAL AND PERSISTENT FORMS OF ATRIAL FIBRILLATION].

The aim of this work was to study prognostic significance of the relationship between the homocysteine level, structural/functional atrial remodeling, and clinical picture of paroxysmal and persistent forms of atrial fibrillation (AF). The study included 75 patients with AF concomitant with coronary heart disease and hypertensive disease without apparent structural changes in myocardium. Group 1 was comprised of 48 patients with paroxysmal AF, group 2 of 27 patients with persistent AF. 19 patients with coronary heart disease and hypertensive disease without AF served as controls. The structura

Reducing false arrhythmia alarms in the ICU using multimodal signals and robust QRS detection.

This study developed algorithms to decrease the arrhythmia false alarms in the ICU by processing multimodal signals of photoplethysmography (PPG), arterial blood pressure (ABP), and two ECG signals. The goal was to detect the five critical arrhythmias comprising asystole (ASY), extreme bradycardia (EBR), extreme tachycardia (ETC), ventricular tachycardia (VTA), and ventricular flutter or fibrillation (VFB). The different characteristics of the arrhythmias suggested the application of individual signal processing for each alarm and the combination of the algorithms to enhance false alarm detect

Parasympathetic tone variations according to umbilical cord pH at birth: a computerized fetal heart rate variability analysis.

Non-reassuring fetal heart rate tracings reflect an imbalance between the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems. In this situation, fetal asphyxia can be suspected and may be confirmed by metabolic measurements at birth like low pH or high base deficit values. The objective of this study was to determine whether fetal asphyxia during labor is related to parasympathetic nervous system activity. This is a retrospective study of a database collected in 5 centers. Two hundred and ninety-nine fetal heart rate tracings collected during labor were analyzed. Autonomic nervous system, especia

Effects of acepromazine on the stress response in Southern chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica) captured by means of drive-nets.

This study was conducted to assess the stress response of Southern chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica) to capture and physical restraint and the effects of acepromazine (a short-acting neuroleptic) on this response. Forty free-ranging Southern chamois were captured, injected intramuscularly with acepromazine (19 animals, randomly selected) or saline (the other 21 animals), and physically restrained for 3 h. Heart rate and body temperature were monitored with telemetric devices, and blood samples were obtained at capture and every hour thereafter to determine hematologic and serum biochemical paramet

Heart rate variability in patients with Brugada syndrome in Thailand.

AIMS: Since patients with Brugada syndrome usually have symptoms at nighttime, we hypothesize that changes in autonomic modulation have an important role in the occurrence of the ventricular fibrillation episodes. The objective of this study was to determine the changes in heart rate variability (HRV) in patients with Brugada syndrome compared to asymptomatic subjects with Brugada ECG and controls. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied 17 patients with Brugada syndrome, 10 asymptomatic subjects with Brugada ECG and 45 controls. Patients with Brugada syndrome and asymptomatic subjects with Brugada E

Ambulatory blood pressure and heart rate in paramedics: effects of cynical hostility and defensiveness.

Ambulatory blood pressure and heart rate responses were obtained in 33 male paramedics during a 24-hour work shift to examine the effects of episodes of occupational stress on cardiovascular reactivity and subjective reports of stress. The aim of this study was to determine how individual differences in cynical hostility and defensiveness interacted with situational demands to affect cardiovascular responses in a natural setting. Defensiveness was found to interact significantly with cynical hostility in predicting subjects' heart rate responses in different work contexts. Specifically, in a h

Effect of orally administered celiprolol in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation.

The heart rate increase induced by dynamic exercise in patients with chronic atrial fibrillation is competitively attenuated by beta-blockade. The influence of oral celiprolol on exercise induced tachycardia was evaluated in 23 patients with chronic stable atrial fibrillation in a dose-titration study. This was succeeded by a placebo-controlled double-blind, crossover multi-center trial. During the dose-titration phase each patient underwent a single-blind three week dose escalation period-taking celiprolol 200 mg once daily for one week, celiprolol 400 mg once daily for the third week. After

Contractile Function of Isolated Hearts With Preserved and Reduced Ejection Fraction In Vivo.

The aim of the study was comparison of contractile function of isolated hearts of rats with doxorubicin-induced myocardial injury which were tentatively divided according to the level of ejection fraction determined by echocardiography in vivo. After 4 weeks of doxorubicin administration (2 mg/kg subcutaneously once a week) about half of animals had normal (86±1%) and the other half reduced (61±4%) ejection fraction. The first group was defined as diastolic heart failure (DHF) and the other as systolic (SHF). The maximal pressure developed by the isolated heart in isovolumic mode was reduced i

[The function of beta receptors in chronic left ventricular insufficiency].

Hyperactivity of the noradrenergic sympathetic system is one of the essential "compensatory"mechanisms in chronic left ventricular failure. The ensuing stimulation of myocardial beta-adrenergic receptors results in an increase of heart rate and contractility which, to some extent, counterbalances the alteration of left ventricular function, but rapidly reaches its limits: the excessive shortening of diastoles and, mostly, the increase of myocardial oxygen demand neutralize the beneficial haemodynamic effect of beta-adrenergic stimulation, especially when ischaemia is the cause of the heart fai

Sex-specific differences in mortality and neurocardiac interactions in the Kv1.1 knockout mouse model of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP).

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is a devastating complication of epilepsy with possible sex-specific risk factors, although the exact relationship between sex and SUDEP remains unclear. To investigate this, we studied Kcna1 knockout (Kcna1-/-) mice, which lack voltage-gated Kv1.1 channel subunits and are widely used as a SUDEP model that mirrors key features in humans. To assess sex differences, we first performed survival analysis, EEG-ECG recordings, seizure threshold testing and retrospective analysis of previous intracardiac pacing data. We then applied a novel modelling approa

Cardiovascular Disease Patterns, Mortality, and Hospitalization Trends in Adults Over 18: Insights From the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System Database.

Background Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including coronary artery disease, heart attacks, strokes, and hypertension, are the leading cause of global morbidity and mortality. Despite advancements in diagnostic techniques, treatment protocols, and public health initiatives, the prevalence of CVD continues to rise. Hence, understanding trends of predisposing factors for CVD and current treatment modalities such as medication use and frequency of hospitalization is essential for developing effective interventions and improving public health strategies. This study leverages Behavioral Risk Facto

[Remarks to statement from the rate of cause of death due to ischaemic heart diseases].

The rate of cause of death due to IHD ('ischaemic heart diseases') represents a terminal occurrence of the arteriosclerotic basic disease. lts extent is determined by the incidence of cardiovascular diseases, prevalence and duration of sickness. The relative frequency of falling ill as well as the reflection of the risk of falling ill and the extent of the population fallen ill are not known at all or only very insufficiently. Thus the question cannot be answered how the risk to fall ill with the coronary heart disease must be considered in view of the high mortality rate IHD of the population

Heart rate variability-based detection of epileptic seizures: Machine learning analysis and characterization of discriminant metrics.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine the most suitable cardiac metrics and machine learning algorithms (MLa) for an electrocardiography-based seizure detection device. METHODS: In a multicenter, prospective study of adult inpatients, with limited physical activity, 24-hour video-electroencephalogram recordings including ≥ 1 seizure were analyzed. Heart Rate (HR) and Heart Rate Variability (HRV) metrics were calculated continuously from the corresponding electrocardiogram. HR and HRV time series were segmented into 5-min epochs. MLa were used to classify the epochs as containing seizures or not fo

Heart rate-dependence of arterial distensibility in vivo.

OBJECTIVES: Viscous and inertial components contribute to arterial distensibility and compliance in vitro. The purpose of our study was to determine whether this phenomenon is of relevance in vivo, namely, whether arterial compliance is altered by an increase in heart rate. DESIGN: Arterial diameter was assessed by an echo-Doppler device in a common carotid and femoral artery, namely, in a large elastic and a muscle artery. The studies were performed in 12-week-old pentobarbitone-anaesthetized Wistar-Kyoto rats subjected to atrial pacing via a transjugular unipolar catheter at five different

Heart rate phase is an indicator of chronotype-relevant circadian shifts associated with human disease: an All of Us Research Program analysis.

Chronotype describes an individual's day or night preference and is thought to exert health effects through circadian timing, yet continuous circadian measures related to chronotype have never been examined in large human cohorts. We sought to quantify wearable-derived heart rate phase (HRP) as an indicator of chronotype-relevant circadian shifts and determine its associations with human disease. Heart rate was aggregated over 5 min intervals in All of Us participants with wearable data and fit to a sine curve with 24 h period to determine HRP. Associations between HRP and circadian genomic va
