Massive ovarian edema is a rare entity that can be confused with ovarian neoplasm. A 20-year-old nulligravid woman presented with a large solid pelvic mass and abdominal mass. On examination a solid mass was found which extended from the pelvis until over the umbilical transversal line. Abdominal ultrasound revealed a solid non-homogenous mass originating from the right ovary with largest diameter of over 30 cm, fine internal echoes, regular margins, and poor vascularization. The abdominal computed tomography (CT) image was non-contributory. Blood work including hematology and biochemistry was

Polycythemia vera is a chronic myeloproliferative neoplasm in which erythrocytosis, Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription activation, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, and abnormal blood-cell activation converge to increase cardiovascular risk. This narrative review examines how electrocardiography, echocardiography, coronary angiography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, and right-heart catheterization contribute to recognition and characterization of cardiac involvement in polycythemia vera. Reported abnormalities include QT and P-wave changes, atrial arrhythmi

BACKGROUND: Primary diffuse leptomeningeal melanocytosis (PDLM) is a rare central nervous system neoplasm. Diagnosis is challenging in amelanotic variants because they lack the characteristic T1 hyperintensity on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), leading to confusion with infectious meningitis or hemorrhage.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old male presented with severe headache and neck stiffness. Initial computed tomography suggested a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH); however, digital subtraction angiography was negative. MRI revealed diffuse leptomeningeal enhancement without T1 hyperintensity.

Myeloid/lymphoid neoplasm with FGFR1 rearrangement (MLNF) is one of the rare hematologic malignancies with variable clinical presentations, including a chronic phase resembling myeloproliferative neoplasms and an acute phase presenting as myeloid/lymphoid leukemia or lymphoma, often associated with eosinophilia. The prognosis of MLNF has been poor, and allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) remains the only curative approach, although selective FGFR1 inhibitors, such as pemigatinib, have recently emerged as therapeutic options. Nevertheless, the efficacy of pemigatinib in ag

Clonal hematopoiesis (CH) is associated with an increased risk of developing myeloid neoplasms (MNs) such as myelodysplastic neoplasm (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML). In general, CH comprises clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) and clonal cytopenia of undetermined significance (CCUS). It is an age-related phenomenon characterized by the presence of somatic mutations in hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) that acquire a fitness advantage under selection pressure. Individuals with CHIP have an absolute risk of 0.5-1.0% per

Myeloid neoplasms represent a broad spectrum of hematological disorders for which somatic mutation status in key driver genes is important for diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. Here we summarize the findings of a targeted, next generation sequencing laboratory developed test in 24,639 clinical myeloid samples. Data were analyzed comprehensively and as part of individual cohorts specific to acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN). Overall, 48,015 variants were detected, and variants were found in all 50 genes in the panel. The mean

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare hematologic malignancy arising from precursor dendritic cells. BPDCN cells characteristically express several markers on their cell surfaces including CD123, CD4, and CD56. Because of its rarity and challenging clinical presentation, there was no standard of care in managing BPDCN for decades and its prognosis overall was poor. However, as understanding of this rare neoplasm has increased, so have treatment options. The conventional cytotoxic chemotherapy regimens once used in the treatment of BPDCN were modest in their impact on d

Mutations of JAK2V617F, CALR, and MPL genes confirm the diagnosis of myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN). This study aims to determine the genetic profile of JAK2V617F, CALR exon 9 Type 1 (52 bp deletion) and Type 2 (5 bp insertion), and MPL W515 L/K genes among Malaysian patients and correlate these mutations with clinical and hematologic parameters in MPN. Mutations of JAK2V617F, CALR, and MPL were analyzed in 159 Malaysian patients using allele-specific polymerase chain reaction, including 76 polycythemia vera (PV), 41 essential thrombocythemia (ET), and 42 primary myelofibrosis (PMF) mutatio

T-cell lymphomas (TCLs) represent a group of lymphoid neoplasms characterized by an aggressive clinical course, even after an anthracycline-containing regimen. Novel agents for patients with relapsed/refractory TCL are urgently needed. Lenalidomide is an oral drug with immunomodulatory, antiangiogenic and direct antineoplastic effects. These peculiar mechanisms of action make TCL an attractive target for lenalidomide. We have identified five clinical trials in which lenalidomide monotherapy was investigated to treat TCL, including cutaneous TCL (CTCL) and adult T-cell lymphoma/leukemia (ATLL).

BACKGROUND: Appendectomy remains one of the most common emergency operations. Recent research supports the treatment of uncomplicated appendicitis with antibiotics alone. While nonoperative management of appendicitis may be safe in some patients, it may result in missed neoplasms. We present a case of acute appendicitis where the final pathology resulted in a diagnosis of a Burkitt-type lymphoma.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 18-year-old male presented to the emergency department with 24 h of right lower quadrant pain with associated urinary retention, anorexia, and malaise. Past medical history was

Systemic Mastocytosis (SM) is a rare myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN) that is characterized by a clonal proliferation of mast cells (MCs). The symptoms and clinical presentation of SM are the result of both MC proliferation as well as activation and degranulation, causing hyperactive and over-exaggerated hypersensitivity responses, as well as organ infiltration by pathogenic MCs. The clinical presentation and course of SM is varied and organ involvement can lead to significant morbidity and mortality in some cases. The subtypes of SM include indolent SM (ISM), smoldering SM (SSM), aggressive

BACKGROUND: The presence of noncutaneous neoplasms does not seem to increase the risk of cutaneous malignant melanoma; however, it seems to be associated with the development of other hematological, brain, breast, uterine, and prostatic neoplasms. An ecological transversal study was conducted to study the geographic association between cutaneous malignant melanoma and 24 localizations of cancer in forty European countries.
METHODS: Cancer incidence rates were extracted from GLOBOCAN database of the International Agency for Research on Cancer. We analyzed the age-adjusted and gender-stratified

Deletion of the long arm of chromosome 20 (20q-) is a frequent finding in bone marrow karyotypes, mainly associated with myeloid neoplasms (MNs). Its clinical significance in the setting of normal bone marrow morphology is unclear. We described the clinical characteristics, cytogenetic findings, and outcome of 102 such patients seen at our institution from 2000-2014. Their median age was 66 years. The indication for bone marrow biopsy was either unexplained cytopenias (48%) or hematologic cancer staging/reevaluation (52%). In 88 (86%) patients, 20q- was an isolated finding. Thirty-nine (38%) p

OBJECTIVE: To review the incidence and causes of the infections and metabolic diseases of the nervous system in patients with systemic neoplasias.
DEVELOPMENT: Patients with immunodeficiency, particularly those with hematological neoplasias and persons treated with immunosuppressive drugs have a considerable tendency to infection due to opportunist germs. Infections of the nervous system are relatively rare (0.02%-1%) and the commonest neoplasms are lymphomas, especially those of Hodgkin type and lymphosarcomas. The most frequent infections are caused by the herpes virus, meningitis due to Li

INTRODUCTION: Hematologic neoplasms (lymphomas, leukemias, and myelomas) represent approximately 10% of all tumors. Antineoplastic treatments, including chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and immunotherapy, generate gastrointestinal toxicity that impacts therapeutic efficacy and nutritional status, establishing a vicious cycle of malnutrition and toxicity.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A narrative review was conducted using a literature search of the electronic databases PubMed, Embase, UpToDate, and Medscape for chemotherapy, targeted therapies, and immunotherapy used in lymphomas, leukemias, and mu…

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is an aggressive hematological malignancy whose transformed cells exhibit morphological and immunophenotypic characteristics similar to macrophages, and arises de novo or as part of a clonal 'evolution' of other pre-existing hematological neoplasms. This study investigates the potential use of the J774A.1 cell line (a cell line derived from murine tumor cells, commonly used in macrophage research) as a research model to study the role of polydisperse extracellular vesicles (PEVs) secreted by the HS cells, considering that bacterial infections are common in patients wit

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is an aggressive, poor-prognostic, and CD123-overexpressing orphan hematologic malignancy for which tagraxofusp, a CD123-targeted fusion protein, is the only approved drug. In this retrospective study, safety and efficacy of tagraxofusp were assessed through real-world clinical practice data, collected in patients with BPDCN who received tagraxofusp via a European Named Patient Program (2019-2024). Twenty-six adults with treatment-naïve BPDCN received 12 µg/kg tagraxofusp intravenously daily on days 1-5 (or by day 10) of a 21-day cycle. Prim

BACKGROUND: In vivo T-cell depletion with antithymocyte globulin (ATG), especially at high-doses has been shown to be associated with increased incidence of infections after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT). However, it remains unclear whether ATG, even at low-doses increases the risk of posttransplant infections in the high-risk HSCT setting.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective study of viral and fungal infections early after transplantation, using the data from 82 patients with hematological malignancies. Among them, 42 underwent HLA-mis
