Pediatric proximal femur fractures are high-energy injuries with predictable and morbid complications. Osteonecrosis of the femoral head is the most common complication with identified risk factors including fracture type, patient's age, degree of displacement, timing to reduction, and stability of fixation. Additional complications include nonunion, coxa vara, and premature physeal arrest. The mainstay of treatment for traumatic pediatric osteonecrosis is hip preservation with total hip arthroplasty being reserved as a salvage procedure. An anatomic fracture reduction and a biomechanically st

Falls are common cause of injuries among elderly people, and fractures are the most serious consequence of falls. For seniors, hip fractures are the second major cause of bedridden. The feature and acute care of head injury, spinal cord injury, vertebrae fracture, and hip fracture are described. Just had fracture fixation, the patient can not go back to the original ADL. In order not to become bedridden, both medication and physical examination are important based on the new disease concept of locomotive syndrome. To do so, requires hospital and clinic cooperation. Sufficient cooperation is no

RATIONALE: Bilateral femoral neck stress fractures are relatively rare injuries that occur frequently in military recruits, athletes and patients with osteoporosis, renal bone disease, metabolic bone disease, and chronic steroid use. Herein, a case of an elderly patient with bilateral femoral neck stress fractures is reported.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 65-year-old man presented to the author's hospital with right hip pain for over a month. The patient was a farmer, had a long history of field labor before the onset of pain, denied any history of trauma.
DIAGNOSIS: The patient was diagnosed with a

OBJECTIVE: To assess the functional outcomes of patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty for ankylosing spondylitis (AS).
METHODS: Between March, 2013 and May, 2016, 75 AS patients with ankylosed hip (involving 92 hips) underwent unilateral biological artificial total hip arthroplasty. The patients were followed up for 12-24 months and the changes in VAS score of the affected hip were evaluated. The changes in the range of motion (ROM) of hip, employment, BASFI and BASDAI score, and Harris score were analyzed after the operations.
RESULTS: Significant improvements in general joint mobility

BACKGROUND: When surgeons perform total hip arthroplasty for hips with a high dislocation related to developmental dysplasia of the hip, obtaining long-term stable implant fixation and optimizing patient function remain challenges. The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the results of cementless arthroplasty with a simultaneous subtrochanteric shortening osteotomy in a group of patients with Crowe type-IV developmental dysplasia of the hip.
METHODS: In a retrospective study, we evaluated the results and complications of twenty-eight consecutive primary cementless total hip arthroplasties i

Baseball is unique in its multiple facets: pitching, hitting, base rounding, and fielding are distinct activities that require different athletic skills to perform at a high level. Likewise, these different aspects of the game can contribute to a multitude of varying injuries. While high-velocity overhead throwing, along with batting, can produce a plethora of upper extremity injuries that often garner attention, injuries to the lower extremity can severely impact a player's performance and ability to compete. The rigors of the short, explosive sprinting required for base running, as well as t

A male professional football player (left-back in Portugal's top division) in his 20s sustained an obturator internus muscle injury during a forceful kicking motion. MRI confirmed the obturator internus injury, a very rare diagnosis in sports. In contrast to typical management of muscle injuries, the player continued to train and compete with no missed matches. He was closely monitored with daily assessments of pain, hip function and on-field performance. Within 48 hours, he achieved full, pain-free recovery, and his performance remained unaffected throughout. This case highlights the uncommon

INTRODUCTION: Femoral neck fractures are among the most common injuries in the elderly, and total hip arthroplasty is increasingly preferred due to superior functional outcomes and lower reoperation rates; however, instability and dislocation remain major concerns with conventional fixed-bearing total hip arthroplasty. Dual mobility total hip arthroplasty has been introduced to reduce these complications.
METHODS: This retrospective analytical study included 335 patients aged over 55 years with AO/OTA type 31B or 31C femoral neck fractures who underwent total hip arthroplasty between January

PURPOSE: Hip strength may directly relate to abnormal running mechanics and contribute to the high incidence of overuse injuries in distance runners. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between hip isokinetic strength and thorax and pelvic motion during treadmill running.
METHODS: Isokinetic hip strength and treadmill running kinematics were collected on 24 collegiate cross-country runners (14 males and 10 females). Each subject completed a running protocol on a treadmill at a self-selected speed (3.58 ± 0.26 m·s) and prescribed speed (3.58 ± 0.0 m·s). Kinematic data w

Traumatic injuries of the hip and pelvis are common in child athletes and typically require minimal treatment. However, the presentation of such injuries can at times be clinically indistinguishable from the onset of a benign or malignant neoplastic process. In these circumstances, the orthopedic surgeon relies on modern diagnostic tools including imaging-predominantly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography-and pathology studies. This article presents the cases of 2 adolescent boys with traumatic injuries to the hip, in which the threat of neoplasm could not be ruled out by i

BACKGROUND: Trauma patients are at increased risk for venous thromboembolism despite routine prophylaxis. A five-year retrospective review of pulmonary embolism at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont showed that four types of injuries (head injuries, spinal cord injuries, complex pelvic fractures, and hip fractures) accounted for 92 percent of pulmonary emboli in patients on the trauma service.
STUDY DESIGN: Beginning July 1991, all patients who met criteria for a high-risk injury (excluding hip fractures) had prophylactic vena cava filters inserted percutaneously in the radiology suite. W

OBJECTIVES: To elucidate the injury profile in Brazilian elite women's football.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
METHODS: Time-loss injuries, along with match and training exposure, were monitored throughout a full season in four Brazilian elite clubs.
RESULTS: Sixty-three out of 133 players (47 %) sustained 112 time-loss injuries along the season, leading to 0.8 injuries per player on average. The overall injury incidence rate was 5.0 injuries per 1000 h of exposure. Sudden onset injuries occurred at a rate of 4.2/1000 h of overall exposure, with rates of 15.9/1000 h during matches and 2

Posterior fracture-dislocation of the hip is an uncommon athletic injury, occasionally seen in contact and high-energy sports. The mechanism of injury in this case highlights the high hip joint forces possible during running. The key treatment principle is early reduction of the hip joint, since the incidence of osteonecrosis of the femoral head and degenerative arthrosis increases with delay. Operative treatment will frequently be required to achieve a stable, congruent reduction of articular surfaces, essential for good long-term results. Partial weight-bearing exercise such as swimming and

Soccer participation is increasing among female adolescents with a concomitant rise of injuries in this group. Age- and sex-related factors, such as the transition from skeletal immaturity to skeletal maturity as well as anatomic, physiologic, neuromuscular, and behavioral differences between females and males, all play a role in injury patterns for these athletes. Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears in this group have received a great deal of attention in the medical literature and the media in recent years with increasing knowledge about causative factors, surgical management, and injury

Joint injuries are very common in the athletic population, especially professional soccer players, with an incidence of 10 to 35.5 injuries per 1000 hours. Most soccer-related joint injuries occur in the lower extremities, with 16% to 46% occurring in the knee and 17% to 40% occurring in the ankle. Because of the limited healing capacity of cartilage and other intra-articular soft tissue structures, such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus, joint injuries often lead to the development of early disabling osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis in soccer players is 5 to 12 times more frequen

In 400 fractures of the upper and lower leg, 7 patients had an additional lesion of the posterior cruciate ligament. This combination occurs in people, who had a high energy frontal impact in the sitting position. The ligamenteous injury is often overlooked because of multiple injuries and difficulty in examination of a knee joint on a fractured leg. In high velocity injuries of the lower extremity, knee and hip joint injuries must not be overlooked. The diagnosis of knee injury can be made by inspection and palpation of a joint effusion and by a knee joint X-ray, which shows an avulsion fract

Vascular injuries after total hip arthroplasty are occasionally reported, but we have found only two cases of major arterial occlusion, and none at all involving the common femoral artery. We report two cases of occlusion of the common femoral artery after Charnley arthroplasties, one of which resulted in a below-knee amputation.
