Morphological and cytochemical examinations of mononuclear phagocytes (MP) from venous blood leukoconcentrate were carried out in 25 patients with chronic monocytic leukemia, 7 patients with malignant histiocytosis, 3 patients with Langerhans' cell histiocytosis and 26 patients with reactive proliferations of the cells belonging to MP system associated with autoaggressive, infectious diseases or tumors. Lymphohistiocytic erythrophagocytosis (LE) is a usually fatal disease characterized by fever, organomegaly, hyperlipidemia, central nervous system involvement, and cellular immunodeficiency. Treatment with corticosteroids, cytotoxic chemotherapy, and blood exchange is unsuccessful. We have treated two children with the epipodophyllotoxin VP-16 and with intrathecal chemotherapy. Each patient had an initial complete response, and one remains in remission 36 months after therapy began. Aziridinylbenzoquinone (AZQ) therapy induced a complete response in a patient who relapsed during VP-16 therapy.

The authors reported 12 cases of patients with cutaneous involvment associated with the presence of Sezary cells in the peripheral blood and specific lymph node involvment. They classify these cases as partial, early segmentary types, advanced types and diffuse types. either leukemic or sarcomatous. This study, once again, suggests the possibility that the Sezary syndrome and mycosis fu ngoïdes are different expressions, either predominantly leukemic, or predominantly sarcomatous, of the same chronic malignant hemopathy of "T" lymphocytes.

The clinical and histopathologic findings in 25 cases of malignant lymphoma of the skin other than mycosis fungoides were reviewed. Nine cases of childhood malignant histiocytosis (MH) showed an abnormally high serum phenylalanine (Phe)/tyrosine (Tyr) ratio (3.47 +/- 1.32) coincident with hyperferritinemia (50,800 +/- 33,600 ng/ml). A 7-year-old male Yorkshire terrier was examined for multiple plaques and nodules on the skin. The clinical, cytological and histopathological features indicated a malignant histiocytosis. Cytoreductive chemotherapy produced moderate clinical improvement, but died at day 90 after the first admission.
