Despite the importance of spatial processes in host-parasite interactions, parasite dispersal has been the subject of few experimental studies. Introduced marsupial common brushtail possums (Trichosurus vulpecula) are a major environmental and agricultural pest in New Zealand. Parastrongyloides trichosuri, an intestinal rhabdiasoid nematode parasite specific to possums, is being evaluated as a self-disseminating delivery system for engineered fertility control vaccines. This study addressed whether an artificial infection could be established in a naïve, free-living possum population, by measu…

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The relationship between intestinal pathology and immune expulsion of gastrointestinal nematodes remains controversial. Immune expulsion of gastrointestinal helminth parasites is usually associated with Th2 responses, but the effector mechanisms directly responsible for parasite loss have not been elucidated. Mast cell hyperplasia is a hallmark of infection with gastrointestinal nematodes, in particular Trichinella spiralis. Although the precise mechanism by which mast cells induce expulsion of these parasites has not been elucidated, it has been proposed that mast cell medi

Many Koreans usually eat raw pond smelts, Hypomesus olidus, in the winter. This study was performed to evaluate the infection status with trematode metacercariae in pond smelts from January 1998 through February 1999. Among 1,305 fish collected, 459 were purchased from wholesale dealers in Chinchon-gun, Chungchongbuk-do, and the rest of them were caught with a casting net in Soyangho (Lake), Taehoman (Bay) and Paekkokchosuchi (Pond). Seven species of trematode metacercariae including two unidentified ones were detected from 1,305 pond smelts. The number of detected trematode metacercariae acco

Parasitic infections in man and domestic animals exhibit two striking characteristics (a) their prevalence is high, but infections are unequally distributed among individuals within populations and (b) immunity is often slow to develop and appears, at best, only partially effective. Recent immunological and epidemiological studies suggest that effective immunity can develop, but that high prevalence within populations reflects the operation, not only of socio-economic and climatic factors, or husbandry practices, but also of powerful environmentally induced constraints upon the development of

Opisthorchis viverrini has been found to be the only species of liver fluke in Thailand. The morphology is similar to that of O. felineus, but it has more deeply lobated testes, situated near the ovary. The appearance and distribution of the vitellaria with few granular clumps and the shorter and wider egg closely resemble that of C. sinensis. The adult worms live in the biliary system. Eggs pass out in faeces. On reaching water the eggs are eaten by snails, the first intermediate host. In the snail the miracidia hatch and develop further through the stages of sporocysts, rediae and cercariae

In order to determine the duration of the gonotrophic cycle in Anopheles culicifacies Giles in Sri Lanka, ovarian development in freshly blood-fed wild-caught females was studied in the laboratory and the findings were compared with mark-and-release recoveries in the field. In specimens of unknown parity at first capture probable feeding intervals of 1, 2 and 3 days (mean: 1.7 - 2.1 days) were found. The release of freshly blood-fed nullipars bred from larvae produced two recaptures from which it could be concluded that the time required to become parous need not be more than three days. These

Protozoan parasites, such as Plasmodium, Leishmania, Toxoplasma, Cryptosporidium, and Trypanosoma, are causative agents of health-threatening diseases in both humans and animals, leading to significant health risks and socioeconomic losses globally. The development of effective therapeutic and prevention strategies for protozoan-caused diseases requires a full understanding of the pathogenesis and protective events occurring in infected hosts. Interferons (IFNs) are a family of cytokines with diverse biological effects in host antimicrobial defense and disease pathogenesis, including protozoan

Density-dependent effects on parasite fitness have been documented from adult helminths in their definitive hosts. There have, however, been no studies on the cost of sharing an intermediate host with other parasites in terms of reduced adult parasite fecundity. Even if larval parasites suffer a reduction in size, caused by crowding, virtually nothing is known about longer-lasting effects after transmission to the definitive host. This study is the first to use in vitro cultivation with feeding of adult trematodes to investigate how numbers of parasites in the intermediate host affect the size

Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular parasite that reconfigures its host cell to promote pathogenesis. One consequence of Toxoplasma parasitism is increased migratory activity of host cells, which facilitates dissemination. Here, we show that Toxoplasma triggers the unfolded protein response (UPR) in host cells through calcium release from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). We further identify a novel role for the host ER stress sensor protein IRE1 in Toxoplasma pathogenesis. Upon infection, Toxoplasma activates IRE1, engaging its noncanonical role in actin remodeling through the binding of fila

Host genetic variability can modulate infection resistance, although its role in infection clearance remains unclear. Hookworm disease (Uncinaria sp.) is the leading cause of pup mortality in several otariid species, although the parasite can be cleared through immune-mediated processes. We evaluated the association of host genetic diversity, body condition and immune response with hookworm resistance and/or clearance in the South American fur seal (Arctocephalus australis). Uninfected pups had higher heterozygosity than parasitized individuals, indicating a negative relationship between heter

Toxoplasma gondii uses unique secretory organelles called rhoptries to inject an array of effector proteins into the host cytoplasm that hijack host cell functions. We have discovered a novel rhoptry pseudokinase effector, ROP54, which is injected into the host cell upon invasion and traffics to the cytoplasmic face of the parasitophorous vacuole membrane (PVM). Disruption of ROP54 in a type II strain of T. gondii does not affect growth in vitro but results in a 100-fold decrease in virulence in vivo, suggesting that ROP54 modulates some aspect of the host immune response. We show that parasit

BACKGROUND: Eimeria tenella poses a significant threat to the poultry industry, and understanding the correlation between metabolic changes in cecal tissues and microbial community alterations is crucial for studying parasite-host interactions.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To investigate the associations among dominant bacterial populations, key functional genes, and altered metabolites in cecal tissues and contents during E. tenella infection.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Metagenomic analysis was first performed on cecal contents to identify the dominant bacterial communities, followed by metabolomic ana

Evidence of how environmental cues affect the phenotypes of, and compatibility between Schistosoma mansoni and their hosts come from studies in environmental parasitology and research on host diet and chemotherapeutic treatment. Schistosomes deal with a multitude of signals from the water environment as well as cues that come from their hosts, particularly in response to molecules that serve to recognize and destroy them, i.e., those molecules that arise from their hosts' immune systems. These interactions shape, not only the parasite's morphology, metabolism and behavior in the short-term, bu

The alterations of serum enzymes induced in the host system of swiss albino mice by infection with Ancylostoma caninum larvae have been studied in multiple doses of infection. It was found that the level of transaminases, alkaline phosphatase and amylase increased significantly throughout the infection period when compared with controls. In infected animals, increase of enzymes was influenced by the host-parasite interactions caused due to the retained concentration of larval antigens.

BACKGROUND: Parasite proteases have important roles in cleavage of host proteins during the invasion of host tissues and participate in the parasite's evasion from the host's immune response. The aim of the present study was to estimate a metalloproteinase properties of Taenia solium metacestode (TsMP) during host-parasite interactions, and evaluate its potential as a serodiagnostic antigen for cysticercosis.
METHODS: The cDNA coding for the mature catalytic domain of TsMP was cloned into pGEX-6P-1 expression vector. A recombinant glutathione S-transferase and TsMP fusion protein was induced.…

In circumstances where populations of invasive species occur across variable landscapes, interactions among invaders, their parasites, and the surrounding environment may establish local coevolutionary trajectories for the participants. This can generate variable infection patterns when parasites interact with sympatric versus allopatric hosts. Identifying the potential for such patterns within an invasive-species framework is important for better predicting local infection outcomes and their subsequent impacts on the surrounding native community. To begin addressing this question, we exposed

Immune-endocrine interactions have been evaluated much less frequently in nonhuman primates, and this may be due, in part, to logistical and ethical concerns regarding trapping and sampling of endangered species, especially apes. Using noninvasive fecal collection methods, the present study evaluates possible relationships between fecal steroid levels and gastrointestinal parasite infections in the Ngogo chimpanzee community in Kibale National Park, Uganda. Because both testosterone and cortisol exhibit immunosuppressive effects in vitro and in other animal models, it was hypothesized that bot

Although connectivity can promote host species persistence in a metapopulation, dispersal may also enable disease transmission, an effect further complicated by the impact that parasite distribution may have on host-parasite population dynamics. We investigated the effects of connectivity and initial parasite distribution (clustered or dispersed) on microparasite-host dynamics in experimental metapopulations, using guppies and Gyrodactylus turnbulli We created metapopulations of guppies divided into four subpopulations and introduced either a low level of parasites to all subpopulations (dispe

BACKGROUND: Animal-associated microbial communities appear to be key factors in host physiology, ecology, evolution and its interactions with the surrounding environment. Teleost fish have received relatively little attention in the study of surface-associated microbiota. Besides the important role of microbiota in homeostasis and infection prevention, a few recent studies have shown that fish mucus microbiota may interact with and attract some specific parasitic species. However, our understanding of external microbial assemblages, in particular regarding the factors that determine their comp
