OBJECTIVES: The aims of this prospective nationwide investigation were to establish the birth rate, mortality, and morbidity of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants in Finland in 1996-1997, and to analyze risk factors associated with poor outcome.
PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: The study population included all stillborn and live-born ELBW infants (birth weight: <1000 g; gestational age: at least 22 gestational weeks [GWs]), born in Finland between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 1997. Surviving infants were followed until discharge or to the age corresponding with 40 GWs. National ELBW infa

Honduran infant mortality (20/1000) has fallen below the Latin American newborn screening target rate (<30/1000). The authors report 2 Honduran maple syrup urine disease cases and a newborn screening pilot study. The first infant, diagnosed by plasma/urine testing in the U.S., prompted this study. Although marked clinical/radiological improvement occurred after treatment, moderate neurodevelopmental delays persist at 5 years. This 1-month, prospective study used blood spot specimens from hospitalized term Honduran neonates shipped overnight to South Carolina for routine newborn screening with …

From January 1, 1987 through June 30, 1990, 126 infants of small gestational age (SGA) born in our hospital were studied prospectively. The incidence of SGA infant > or = 37 weeks was 71.4%. The incidence of very low birth weight infants was only 6.3%. The incidence of birth asphyxia in this group (14.9%) was 3 times higher than that in full term infants; this incidence showed negative correlation with gestational age and birth weight. The morbidity rates of hypoglycemia (25.7%) and polycythemia (10.1%) were much higher than those in AGA infants. Malformation was the major cause of death in SG

Registry data on all infants born in Sweden between 1983 and 1986 are reviewed to describe perinatal mortality and malformation rate of infants with single umbilical artery (SUA). Since SUA is much more common in infants with chromosomal anomalies and in twins this analysis is confined to the 1694 singletons who were not recorded as having chromosomal anomalies. There was significantly increased risk of perinatal mortality among these infants largely due to an increased frequency of congenital malformations, low birthweight and preterm delivery. Nevertheless, at least 36% of the perinatal mort

BACKGROUND: Perinatal and neonatal mortality rates have been described as sensitive indices of the quality of health care services. Regular audits of perinatal and neonatal mortalities are desirable to evaluate the various global interventions.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the current pattern of perinatal and neonatal mortality in a Nigerian tertiary health facility.
METHODS: Using a prospective audit method, the socio-demographic parameters of all perinatal and neonatal deaths recorded in a Nigerian tertiary facility between February 2017 and January 2018 were studied.
RESULTS: There were 1,019

We have examined the trends in stillbirth rates and neonatal mortality rates of infants of 20-31 weeks' gestational born in Victoria during 1986-1993 (n = 6,462), using data from the Victorian Perinatal Data Collection Unit. Seventy four percent of all infants and 83% of all liveborn infants were born in level 3 hospitals. Both stillbirth and neonatal mortality rates were lower for infants of higher gestational ages, and those born in level 3 hospitals. During 1986-1993, annual stillbirth rates remained steady, with mean values of 61.2%, 40.2%, 24.7%, 16.0%, and 11% for infants of gestational

Deferred cord clamping, also referred to as delayed cord clamping, has been identified as an intervention to reduce mortality before discharge in preterm infants. This practice has been associated with several benefits for neonates. In this short review, we summarize two research studies on the effects of cord clamp timing. In the first study, deferred cord clamping compared to immediate cord clamping reduced mortality before discharge among preterm infants. In the second study, deferred cord clamping reduced mortality before discharge in preterm infants across multiple population groups. Defe

Mortality in infants with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) remains high despite improvements in neonatal and surgical care because many infants develop persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn (PPHN) following repair. Since 1984, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has been used as rescue therapy in all infants (n = 25) with PPHN following CDH repair when conventional management failed, with an overall survival of 60%. Repair was performed in this hospital on 12 infants and in other hospitals in 13 infants transferred for consideration of ECMO after repair. Mortality was th

BACKGROUND: In infants born at < 26 weeks of gestational age (wGA) who develop necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), medical and ethical considerations about whether surgery is the optimal treatment are complicated by a lack of group-specific outcome data. This study investigated nationwide 30-day mortality, surgical complications, and preoperative mortality risk factors in infants born at < 26 wGA who underwent surgery during the active phase of NEC.
METHODS: This retrospective nationwide multicentre study included all infants born at < 26 wGA undergoing surgery for Bell's stage II/III NEC in the

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a severe life-threatening soft tissue infection characterized by rapidly spreading necrosis of the fascia and the subcutaneous tissue. The initial skin presentation ranges from minimal rash to cellulites. The lesions subsequently spread rapidly. Even with appropriate medical and surgical therapy, the mortality rate in NF is more than 50%. In cases of neonates, mortality rate is higher than that ratio. High index of suspicion, prompt aggressive surgery, appropriate antibiotics and supportive care are the mainstays of management in the newborn infant with NF. Herein

BACKGROUND: Stercoral perforation of the colon is a rarely reported disease with high mortality rate. Our literature review identified one prior case reported during pregnancy, with mortality in both mother and infant.
CASE: A nulliparous female presented at 36 weeks of gestation with fever, tachycardia, and severe abdominal pain. She delivered by cesarean when purulent ascites and stercoral perforation of the sigmoid colon were discovered. After a sigmoid resection with end colostomy, she and her infant recovered uneventfully.
CONCLUSION: Stercoral perforation of the colon is rare in pregna

A clinical classification of perinatal morbidity and mortality should be based upon the pathophysiological mechanisms which affect the fetus and newborn infant, resulting in this morbidity and mortality. Each mechanism is a distinctive disturbance which may be regarded as the common pathway for expression of insults to the fetus and newborn infant arising from a wide variety of obstetric abnormalities and specific disease entities. The following classification of mechanisms incorporating the whole spectrum of perinatal problems is proposed: (1) developmental abnormality; (2) immaturity and pre
