Telescoping and gender differences in the time course of disordered gambling: evidence from a general population sample.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The course of disordered gambling in women has been described as 'telescoped' compared with that in men, with a later age at initiation of gambling but shorter times from initiation to disorder. This study examined the evidence, for the first time, for such a telescoping effect in a general population rather than a treatment-seeking sample. METHOD: Participants in a large community-based Australian twin cohort (2001 men, 2662 women) were assessed by structured diagnostic telephone interviews in which they reported the ages at which they had attained various gambling milest

Understanding why people value working from home or hybrid workplace flexibility a study of preferences during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Working-From-Home (WFH) practices expanded rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic and continue to be a point of discussion today with debates increasingly focused on productivity rather than the underlying reasons for WFH or flexibility. This study investigates why individuals value WFH and hybrid work arrangements in the United States. The specific period of study was during the COVID-19 pandemic. Understanding these motivations can inform constructive negotiations and effective policies that enhance productivity while supporting employees' work-life balance and caregiving responsibilities. Leveraging the role of families in decision-making to inform a program of HPV-based self-collection for cervical screening in Tamil Nadu, India: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Collectivist cultures often perceive health seeking and decision-making to be less individual and more communal, with most decisions made in consultation with a spouse or other family members. These dynamics are further complicated by heightened cultural sensitivities for women seeking care for reproductive needs. Our study explored community perceptions of cervical screening and recommendations for self-collection for Human Papillomavirus (HPV) testing in south India. METHODS: We conducted eight focus group discussions (FGDs) with 54 men (mean age 48 years) and 10 FGDs with 67 women

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on tuberculosis epidemiology in California, Florida, New York, and Texas.

RATIONALE: The United States experienced a considerable decline in tuberculosis (TB) incidence in 2020 following the COVID-19 pandemic. OBJECTIVES: While TB rates have since returned to near prepandemic levels, analyzing the pandemic's impact offers insight into TB epidemiology in the United States. METHODS: Focusing on California, Florida, New York, and Texas-the 4 states with the highest TB incidence-we explored 3 potential mechanisms of pandemic-related disruption on TB epidemiology: (1) reduced immigration, (2) reduced Mtb transmission (through social distancing and other behavior change

Women's barriers for contacting general practice when experiencing gynecological cancer symptoms: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: A prerequisite for general practitioners (GPs) being able to refer patients with gynecological cancer alarm symptoms for further investigations is that individuals present the symptoms to the GP. Not all symptoms are presented to the GP, and knowledge of barriers for healthcare-seeking is sparse. The aim of this study was to analyze associations between age, socioeconomic status, and common barriers ("being too embarrassed", "being too busy", "worried about wasting the doctors time" and "worried what the GP might find") towards GP contact with gynecological alarm symptoms. METHODS

Value Added: Vicarious-Affirmation Strategies to Enhance Prediabetes Awareness Among High-Risk Hispanics.

Reducing the progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus hinges on accurate, timely recognition of prediabetes risk and the ability to make corresponding lifestyle changes. However, this critical step is often hindered by resistance to and avoidance of health information among high-risk individuals. Drawing on self- and vicarious-affirmation (VA) theory, this study experimentally tests a brief, culturally targeted, message-based vicarious-affirmation intervention among Hispanic adults at elevated risk (N = 1,039). Relative to standard messaging, the intervention did not improve primary outcomes; h

The right superior temporal gyrus plays a role in semantic-rule learning: Evidence supporting a reinforcement learning model.

In real-life communication, individuals use language that carries evident rewarding and punishing elements, such as praise and criticism. A common trend is to seek more praise while avoiding criticism. Furthermore, semantics is crucial for conveying information, but such semantic access to native and foreign languages is subtly distinct. To investigate how rule learning occurs in different languages and to highlight the importance of semantics in this process, we investigated both verbal and non-verbal rule learning in first (L1) and second (L2) languages using a reinforcement learning framewo

Treatment of triple-negative breast cancer with Chinese herbal medicine: A prospective cohort study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is featured with the biological properties of strong aggressive behaviors, rapid disease progression, high risk of recurrence and metastasis, and low disease free survival. Patients with this tumor are insensitive to the endocrine therapy and target treatment for HER-2; therefore, chemotherapy is often used as routine treatment in clinical. Because of the fact that a considerable number of patients seek for Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) treatment after operation and chemotherapy and (or) radiotherapy, it is thus need to evaluate the correlatio

A dangerous cocktail: Alcohol consumption increases suicidal ideations among problem gamblers in the general population.

The current research examined whether alcohol consumption exacerbates suicidal ideations among gamblers in the general population. While prior research suggests problem gambling severity and excessive alcohol consumption are unique predictors of suicidal behaviors, the extant literature as almost exclusively focused on gamblers in treatment. This represents a significant gap in the literature as less than 10% of gamblers seek treatment. Furthermore, gamblers in treatment are not representative of gamblers in the general population, precluding a simple generalization of research findings. We ad
