Triploidy is not rare and present in about 1% of all recognized human pregnancies, although most of these pregnancies end in spontaneous abortion during the first trimester. Survival of the fetus up to 20 weeks or beyond is rare. Therefore, liveborn infants with triploidy are very rare. Here is a report on a female liveborn infant with triploidy (69,XXX), who was born to a 27-year-old healthy mother. The clinical features are growth retardation, head-to-body disproportion, wide posterior fontanelle, hypertelorism, micrognathia, bilateral pre-auricular polyps, syndactyly of left 3rd and 4th fin

A full-term male neonate, weighing 2540 g at birth, was admitted to hospital on day 2 because of vomiting and severe dehydration. Duodeno-duodenostomy was performed on day 5 for congenital duodenal atresia. The child was well postoperatively until day 9, when he developed fever. Intermittent fever continued despite treatment with several antibiotics. He became seriously ill on day 15 and developed disseminated intravascular coagulation. Treatment with antifungal drugs (amphotericin B and 5-flucytosine) was effective for systemic candidiasis, but candida endophthalmitis developed. There was a p

Complications of central venous catheterizations are divided into immediate or early complications such as haematoma, pneumothorax and haemothorax, and late complications such as infection and venous thrombosis. One of the rare but life-threatening complications of central venous catheterization is pericardial tamponade. We review the literature and add an additional case, the first reported in a newborn infant.

RATIONALE: Duodenal atresia in association with situs inversus abdominus is extremely rare. Care should be taken when selecting appropriate surgical methods, and caution should be exercised during the surgery to avoid misdiagnosis and mistreatment. With prompt recognition of the condition, the surgical procedure should be performed in a timely manner to achieve positive results.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A newborn affected by situs inversus abdominus associated with duodenal atresia, midgut malrotation, and volvulus.
DIAGNOSIS: Congenital duodenal atresia with situs inversus abdominis.
INTERVENTION

UNLABELLED: The duodenum is a short segment of the bowel that is frequently overlooked on radiologic examination. This unique portion occupies both intraperitoneal and extraperitoneal locations, with proximity to many visceral organs, including pancreas, stomach, aorta, and liver. This close proximity creates a differentiation challenge for the radiologist. Duodenal pathologies are categorized into neoplastic and nonneoplastic conditions. Majority of radiologists are familiar with duodenal neoplasm. However, duodenal involvement by a multitude of nonneoplastic conditions can be encountered. Th

Colonic agenesis is a rare cause of congenital bowel obstruction and is usually associated with other malformations such as abdominal wall defects or gastrointestinal, cardiac, urogenital, and musculoskeletal lesions. Although many uncommon types have been reported, ileovesical fistula (IVF) associated with total colonic agenesis (TCA) has not been reported in a newborn with anorectal malformation (ARM). This is the first report of a 1-day-old newborn with ARM, IVF, and TCA.

BACKGROUND: Treatment options for patients presenting with life-threatening splanchnic ischemia, including that of the intestine and liver, could previously only receive salvage surgery and attempted medical revascularization. We propose that urgent liver transplantation (LT) for acute liver failure (ALF) due to massive liver necrosis should be considered as a life-saving treatment. We successfully performed urgent living donor LT for nonocclusive hepatic ischemia accompanied by nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI).

The aim of this report is to describe a rare complication of clostridium difficile (CD) disease, the occurrence of an inflammatory pseudotumor that caused intestinal obstruction in a liver transplant recipient. A 9-month-old girl underwent liver transplantation for biliary atresia. She was given tacrolimus as primary immunosuppressive therapy. Three months after liver transplantation, she presented with febrile protracted bloody diarrhea and failure to thrive. A diagnosis of post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease associated with Epstein-Barr virus infection was initially made on histologi

Between 1982 and 1987 seven neonates ranging in age from 24 hours to 1 week were treated for idiopathic intestinal perforations at the Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Four of the infants were born prematurely; three were full term. Five were being treated in an intensive care nursery when the perforation was diagnosed. All infants whose perforations were due to necrotizing enterocolitis, appendicitis, Hirschsprung's disease, meconium ileus, intestinal atresias, or drug therapy are excluded from the series. None of the infants had associated anomalies. The sites …

Eleven consecutive infants and children with choledochal cyst were evaluated for operative resection of the cyst as the primary surgical therapy. Total excision and biliary reconstruction by choledochojejunostomy was successfully performed in nine patients. Simple intestinal drainage of the cyst was used in two instances because of severe liver disease. Four patients had coexisting biliary malformations. In all five infants, biopsy of the liver was consistent with biliary atresia. In addition, the extrahepatic bile ducts proximal to the cyst were obliterated in two infants. The findings sugges

The preceding pages have described an organism that is far removed from mammals on the taxonomic scale of vertebrates but one that has proven to have a unique and most useful system for studies of liver function and, in particular, bile product transport and excretion. It is also an organism in which iron loading can be studied in the liver and other organs and tissues. Many of the events that occur in this animal during its life cycle with regard to bile pigment metabolism as normal programmed phenomena are unparalleled among the vertebrates. In the larval (ammocoete) period of lampreys, ther

Deletions of chromosome 17q12 [OMIM 614527] encompass a wide range of phenotypes, including renal cysts, diabetes mellitus, pancreatic structural abnormalities, genital tract anomalies, developmental delay, learning difficulties, and more recently, autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia. To date, gastrointestinal malformations have not been fully characterized in this syndrome. In this case report, we describe a four-year-old girl with a 17q12 microdeletion who was born with duodenal atresia, bilateral renal cysts, left kidney dysplasia, a midline cystic structure at the conus medullaris,

Children with abnormal genitalia associated with intersex anomalies or cloacal malformations require vaginal reconstruction. Although many procedures using skin grafts, skin flaps, and intestinal segments have been described, they all have disadvantages. In the present study 12 patients with genital defects who required vaginoplasty underwent surgery using a new technique using bilateral pudendal-thigh flaps based on the posterior labial artery. There were six patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), three with vaginal atresia, two with cloacal deformities, and one with testicular f

In contrast to the remarkable improvement in the results of operations for oesophageal atresia at the University Children's Hospital, Zurich, the death rate secondary to operations for neonatal intestinal obstruction has remained constantly high between the years 1960 and 1976. The results are distressing especially when it is realised that many of them occurred in infants with good general conditions. The causes of death are analysed and classified according the following criteria: 1. Deaths associated with trisomy 21. 2. Deaths due to the short gut syndrome. 3. Deaths due to severe associate

During the 14 yr from 1965 through 1978, 49 infants presented shortly after birth with intestinal obstruction due to impacted meconium. Three of these patients did not have fibrocystic disease. Eight patients were cured by a Gastrografin enema. There were 18 patients who had complications that included associated atresia, volvulus, and/or peritonitis. Various operations were done including resection with either primary anastomosis or enterostomy or varieties of the foregoing. Twenty-three babies had the simple uncomplicated form of meconium ileus. Eleven of these underwent resection and six pa
