Surgical treatment of recurrent intussusception induced by intestinal lymphoid hyperplasia in a child: is bowel resection always necessary? A case report.

BACKGROUND: Intussusception recurrence (IR) induced by intestinal lymphoid hyperplasia (ILH) in children is rare, and surgical treatment is the final resort if IR is refractory to medications and non-surgical interventions. To date, only a few case reports have described surgical management of ILH-induced IR in children, all involving bowel resection regardless of whether there are bowel necrosis and perforation. CASE PRESENTATION: A 2-year-old boy was transferred to our department due to IR. His main complaint was abdominal pain. Color Doppler ultrasound confirmed ileocecal intussusception w

Evaluation of pulmonary artery bleeding during thoracoscopic pulmonary resection for lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Bleeding from the pulmonary artery (PA) can be fatal in video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) for lung cancer. We evaluated intraoperative PA injury and assessed precautions for thoracoscopic anatomic pulmonary resection. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a total of 1098 patients who underwent radical surgery for lung cancer utilizing complete VATS from January 2010 to December 2021. RESULTS: A total of 16 patients (1.5%) had PA injury during VATS, while hemostasis was performed by conversion to thoracotomy in eight patients (50.0%). Although there was a significantly gr

Postoperative Intensive Care Management of Aortic Repair.

Vascular surgery patients have multiple comorbidities and are at high risk for perioperative complications. Aortic repair surgery has greatly evolved in recent years, with an increasing predominance of endovascular techniques (EVAR). The incidence of cardiac complications is significantly reduced with endovascular repair, but high-risk patients require postoperative ST-segment monitoring. Open aortic repair may portend a prohibitive risk of respiratory complications that could be a contraindication for surgery. This risk is greatly reduced in the case of an endovascular approach, and general a

A Patient with Fragmentation of a Calcified Ureteric Stent Requiring Ureteroscopy and Laser Lithotripsy.

BACKGROUND Encrustation of the ureteral stent is a common complication that occurs after a prolonged indwelling duration. Other identified risk factors in the literature include urinary sepsis, chemotherapy, chronic renal failure, metabolic or congenital abnormalities, and nephrolithiasis. This report presents the case of a 39-year-old man with nephrolithiasis and fragmentation of a calcified right ureteric stent that required ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy. CASE REPORT A 39-year-old man was initially admitted for ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy after the diagnosis of bilateral urolithi

Submucosal Lipoma Causing Small Bowel Intussusception.

Intussusception involves telescoping of one segment of the intestine into an adjacent segment. Although this diagnosis is common in the pediatric population, it is much less common in adults. One of the main reasons it may occur in adults is due to a mass. Intestinal masses can be malignant, such as gastrointestinal stromal tumors, lymphomas, or adenocarcinomas; or they can be benign. One benign lead point in intussusception is a lipoma. A lipoma usually presents on the trunk, neck, or forearm, but can rarely be seen in the gastrointestinal tract. When it presents in the intestine, it can be e

Laparoscopic cholecystectomy for left-sided gallbladder.

PURPOSE: Left-sided gallbladder (LSGB) is a rare congenital anomaly in the gallbladder, which is defined as a gallbladder located on the left side of the falciform ligament without situs inversus. We retrospectively analyzed 13 patients diagnosed with LSGB in a single center to confirm the safety of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) and reviewed the anatomical implications in those patients. METHODS: Of the 4910 patients who underwent LC for the treatment of gallbladder disease between August 2007 and December 2019, 13 (0.26%) were diagnosed as having LSGB. We retrospectively analyzed these 1

A comparison of the extent of resection in pineal region tumours via the occipital transtentorial and supracerebellar infratentorial approaches.

PURPOSE: To perform a single unit review of surgical approaches to the pineal region, looking to ascertain if trends were identifiable regarding the extent of resection and the rate of post-operative complications between approaches. We hypothesised that each approach would offer different exposure of the pineal region which may result in poor access to certain areas of the tumour. This may lead to residual tumour in reliable and predictable locations, and an awareness of these regions could help with pre-operative planning and lead to higher levels of suspicion when inspecting these regions i

A case report of concurrence of aberrant extracranial internal carotid artery and nonrecurrent laryngeal nerve in a patient of advanced thyroid carcinoma invading hypopharynx.

Aberrant extracranial internal carotid artery and nonrecurrent laryngeal nerve (NRLN) are neurovascular anomalies, which clinicians should be aware of to prevent severe complications while performing transoral or open surgery in the head and neck area. These two variants can occur simultaneously because of similar etiology of embryological maldevelopment of arch arteries. In this study, a 64-year-old woman complaining of hoarseness presented a bulge in the left hypopharynx. A contrasted computed tomography scan indicated left thyroid mass with hypopharynx invasion, accompanied by right aberran

Hepatic Artery Thrombosis and Takotsubo Syndrome After Liver Transplantation - Which Came First?

BACKGROUND Takotsubo syndrome is a transient, reversible, stress-induced cardiomyopathy that affects only 1.4% of liver transplant patients and can cause complications, including cardiogenic shock, arrhythmia, and thromboembolism. Hepatic artery thrombosis is also rare, affecting just 2-4% of these patients, but can have disastrous consequences. Here, we describe a case of concurrent takotsubo syndrome and hepatic artery thrombosis in a postoperative liver transplant recipient. CASE REPORT The patient was a 66-year-old man who underwent living donor liver transplantation for non-alcoholic stea

Intramyometrial pregnancy after cryopreserved embryo transfer: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Intramyometrial pregnancy is a rare subtype of ectopic pregnancy. The cases following IVF-ET were few reported in recent years. The etiological factors include previous uterine trauma like myomectomy, salpingectomy, dilatation and curettage, assisted reproductive technologies and adenomyosis. Early diagnosis is difficult to make due to its various manifestation. The medical treatment includes conservative management with surgical excision, aortic balloon occlusion, uterine artery embolization, MTX etc. Sometimes hysterectomy was performed due to delayed diagnosis. Anterior quadratus lumborum block for postoperative recovery after total hip arthroplasty: a study protocol for a single-center, double-blind, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate pain management is essential to improve the postoperative recovery after total hip arthroplasty (THA). Various case reports have indicated that anterior quadratus lumborum block (QLB) provides effective postoperative analgesia in lower limb surgeries. However, few randomized controlled trials have confirmed the efficacy of anterior QLB for lower limb surgeries. The aim of this single-center, double-blind, randomized controlled trial is to confirm the efficacy of anterior QLB for postoperative recovery after THA. METHODS: The participants will be randomly assigned to ei

Hereditary spherocytosis: a risk factor for thigh pressure myonecrosis in posterior spine surgery.

The objective of this study was to make surgeons aware of a potential pressure complication in posterior spine surgery for patients with hereditary spherocytosis (HS) and to present a plausible hypothesis for injury. Posterior spine surgery is common practice for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Common, less severe surgical risks include pressure ulcers; while rare, more severe pressure complications include rhabdomyolysis and compartment syndrome. In patients with HS, a familial hemolytic disorder with altered red cell deformability, it is unknown if their red cell disorder is an additi

Interhemispheric Asymmetry of Network Connecting Between Frontal and Temporoparietal Cortices: A Corticocortical-Evoked Potential Study.

BACKGROUND: The connection between the ventrolateral frontal and temporoparietal cortices has an important role in language function on the language-dominant side and spatial awareness on the nondominant side. However, the laterality of these pathways remains controversial. We investigated the laterality of this connection using corticocortical-evoked potentials (CCEPs). METHODS: From April 2014 to March 2016, 27 patients who had undergone frontotemporal craniotomy were enrolled. With the patients under general anesthesia, subdural electrodes were placed on both frontal and temporoparietal ar

[Surgical treatment of acute mediastinitis].

Despite modern intensive care management, acute mediastinitis is still associated with a high morbidity and mortality (up to approximately 40 %). Effective antibiotic therapy, intensive care management, elimination of the causative sources of infection and drainage of the affected mediastinal compartments are the cornerstones of therapy in a multidisciplinary treatment concept. Early diagnosis, prompt and uncompromising initial therapy and planned computed tomography (CT) control after the first stages of therapy in order to decide on the necessity for surgical re-interventions are essential f
