Pseudocapillaria tomentosa, a nematode pathogen, and associated neoplasms of zebrafish (Danio rerio) kept in research colonies.

Infections with capillarid nematodes were observed in zebrafish (Danio rerio) kept at several research facilities and in a large carcinogen exposure study previously conducted at Oregon State University. We report a morphologic description that identifies the worm as Pseudocapillaria tomentosa, a common nematode of cyprinid and other fishes. Pathologic lesions associated with the infection ranged from inflammatory changes to aggressive neoplasms of the intestine (i.e., intestinal carcinomas and mixed malignant neoplasms). Capillarid nematodes may have intermediate or paratenic hosts. Using a l

Enteroviruses and heart disease.

Enteroviruses are ubiquitous, and most individuals encounter numerous serotypes during their lifetime. Infection of the heart is an unusual occurrence but enteroviruses are nevertheless the commonest viral agents of acute myocarditis. The introduction of new serological and molecular virological detection methods has improved the diagnosis of acute enteroviral heart disease and has also provided information on its epidemiology and pathogenesis. There remains, however, much debate on whether cardiac damage results directly from viral infection of myocytes and the ensuing immune response, or ind

The role of the laboratory in a Chlamydia control programme in a developing country.

The laboratory components of a Chlamydia trachomatis disease control programme for a developing country are reviewed. Early diagnosis of chlamydial infections is the most cost effective means of preventing the long term sequelae of trachoma, pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility, which are now a major public health burden to the health care system in developing countries. Public health strategies are required to establish both a co-ordinated limited system of laboratory services, and to promote the diagnosis and treatment of disease syndromes in the absence of laborato

Laboratory-acquired sporotrichosis.

A case of laboratory-acquired sporotrichosis was diagnosed by immunofluorescence and by culture. The patient was then cured by treatment with oral potassium iodide. The need to handle cultures of Sporothrix schenckii with due caution is stressed.

Laboratory Criteria for Exclusion and Readmission of Potentially Infectious Persons in Sensitive Settings in the Age of Culture-Independent Diagnostic Tests: Report of a Multidisciplinary Workgroup.

Culture-independent diagnostic tests (CIDTs) are increasingly used for clinical diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases such as salmonellosis, Shiga toxin-producing E. coli disease, and shigellosis because of their speed, convenience, and generally high-performance characteristics. These tests are also used to screen potentially infectious asymptomatic persons during outbreak investigations in sensitive settings such as childcare, food service, and healthcare. However, only limited performance data are available for CIDTs used on specimens from asymptomatic persons. The Association of Public He

Assessment of laboratory capacity of public secondary health facilities in performing assay of selected epidemic-prone diseases in Oyo State, Nigeria.

This study assessed the capacity of public secondary facility-based laboratories in conducting diagnostic tests for selected epidemic-prone diseases in Oyo State, Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in 17 secondary facility-based laboratories in Oyo State. Capacity was assessed on a 100-point scale in which scores were rated low (≤49%), fair (50-79%) and good (≥80%). Diagnostic testing capacity for bacterial meningitis, cholera, and measles was "low" in all the laboratories. The reasons reported for laboratories not conducting diagnostic tests for the selected diseases i

Follow-up on diagnostic proficiency of laboratories equipped to perform orthopoxvirus detection and quantification by PCR: the second international external quality assurance study.

Two years after the first external quality assurance study on bioterrorism-relevant viruses, we have conducted a follow-up study on orthopoxvirus detection by PCR. Thirty-three laboratories (27 European, 4 Austral-Asian, and 2 American) participated. Samples contained 0 to 40,000,000 DNA copies of lyophilized monkeypox, cowpox, and vaccinia virus per ml. Laboratories achieved a >80% detection chance above 56,234 copies per ml. Global sensitivity was not significantly improved over that of the first study. Twenty-seven and 9 participants, respectively, were able to genotype and quantify virus.
