Craniofacial growth in subjects with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate, and unilateral incomplete cleft lip, from 2 to 22 months of age.

This paper reports a longitudinal quantitative cephalometric analysis of the craniofacial growth in subjects with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate (UCCLP), and unilateral incomplete cleft lip (UICL), from 2 to 22 months of age. The purpose of the study was to determine the amount and direction of growth in UCCLP compared to UICL (control group) from 2 months of age (just prior to lip repair) to 22 months of age, 20 months later. The sample comprised of 49 subjects with UCCLP (37 males and 11 females) and 45 with UICL (29 males and 16 females). The cephalometric analysis of the craniofa…

The 3-line Algorithm for the Treatment of Bilateral Cleft Lip.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of bilateral cleft lip (BCL) depends on many factors, and the complexity of the repair can be reflected in the resulting complications. The severity of the cleft, along with the orthopedic and surgical treatment, requires coordinated treatment under a proven algorithm to achieve an aesthetically harmonious lip while avoiding complications. This study aimed to design and apply a clear approach to measuring severity and applying a technique that leads to optimal outcomes in BCL repairs. METHODS: This study included patients from Operation Smile Ecuador and Guatemala. I…

Congenital double lower lip in a newborn with feeding difficulties.

We describe the case of a full-term male newborn admitted on the first day of life due to feeding difficulties and hypoglycemia, who presented with a protruding bifid mass along the mucosa of the lower lip that interfered with breastfeeding. Double lip is a rare congenital condition caused by hyperplasia of the lip mucosa, most commonly affecting the upper lip. Surgical removal is generally recommended if the condition interferes with speech, sucking, or, more commonly, for cosmetic reasons. In this case treatment was conservative, resolving feeding difficulties without the need for surgery, w…

Dentofacial Orthopaedics in Cleft Lip and Palate: A Comprehensive Review.

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is a congenital craniofacial anomaly characterised by disruption of the maxilla's form and growth, which involves both a defect in the bony structure and soft tissue that needs multidisciplinary rehabilitation. Dentofacial orthopaedic procedures are extraoral and intraoral forces used to move bone segments and shape and mould future development of the maxillofacial region from the neonatal stage to skeletal maturity. This narrative review summarises current orthopaedic techniques that are used before primary surgery, such as passive maxillary plates, active pin-retai…

Prenatal diagnosis of an isolated median cleft of the lower lip.

Orofacial clefts are among the most common congenital anomalies, typically involving the upper lip and palate. In contrast, clefts of the lower lip are exceptionally rare, with very few cases reported in the literature, particularly in the prenatal setting. We report a case of prenatal diagnosis of an isolated median cleft of the lower lip identified during the third trimester. This case highlights a rare congenital anomaly and underscores the importance of a thorough fetal facial assessment during routine ultrasounds.Prenatal diagnosis allows for appropriate perinatal planning and facilitates …

The Blood Supply of the Lips: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The arterial anatomy of the lips is highly variable, influencing both reconstructive and aesthetic procedures. Despite extensive anatomical studies, potential perfusion relationships within the perioral region remain underexplored. This review introduces a new anatomical hypothesis, the "steal phenomenon", which describes a possible redistribution of perfusion (or filler material) from the upper lip toward the nasal and ophthalmic territories through pre-existing anastomoses. METHODS: Electronic databases, including Medline (PubMed), Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science, were syst…

Aging of the Human Lip: Current Knowledge and Clinical Implications.

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive exploration of lip aging remains limited due to anatomical complexity of the structure, with current investigations predominantly focusing on aspects such as dryness management, cheilitis prevention and treatment, and surgical lifts. AIMS: This article aims to review multiple aspects of lip aging and to explore anti-aging approaches for the lips, thereby providing actionable insights for the development of cosmetic lip care products. METHODS: We conducted a literature search in the PubMed database using keywords related to lip aging, and selected the most relevant a…

Congenital Lateral Upper Lip Sinus: A Review of the Literature.

BACKGROUND: Congenital lateral upper lip sinus is an exceptionally rare developmental anomaly, with few cases reported in the literature. It is characterized by the presence of a sinus tract located on the lateral aspect of the upper lip, which may lead to intermittent discharge and cosmetic concerns. Surgical excision is the standard treatment to prevent recurrence and restore lip contour. METHODS: We report a case of a 1-year-old male infant with a congenital lateral upper lip sinus, present since birth and associated with intermittent clear discharge. Clinical evaluation and ultrasonograph…

A Kazakh language Dataset of Lip Movements for Command Recognition.

Lip reading systems determine the content of speech based on the visual tracking of lips of the speaker and therefore serve to offer communicative substitutes when acoustic information is not available in the environment. The training of strong lip reading models requires acquisition of specialised corpora that not only characterise the linguistic variability but also visual articulatory variability. In the given work, we introduce a new visual corpus which is specific to Kazakh lip reading. The corpus contains a collection of 102 nouns taking place most commonly in the Kazakh language with sp…

Treatment Needs of Adult Patients with Cleft Lip and Palate.

After completing care within a cleft/craniofacial team, most young adults have achieved the dental care, psychologic support, speech services, and surgical repairs that are designed to optimize their long-term outcomes. Some patients, however, continue to have ongoing health needs. These can be in the same realms as were present during their childhood years and may be difficult to address outside of a multidisciplinary team. In addition, new challenges can arise when entering the workplace or starting a family. This article explores the potential ongoing treatment needs that may exist and reco

The design of cleft lip and palate surgery pathways in Wales.

This article describes the decisions made relating to cleft surgery pathway design in a single-surgeon cleft service in the United Kingdom at the start of a cleft surgeon's consultant career. Pathways are described according to cleft phenotype and detail aspects of surgical technique, sequence and timing. Transparency is vital to ensure clinical governance and external analysis, especially in the setting of a single-surgeon service. This early declaration of surgical intent aims to lead the way for ongoing reflection, so that future changes to practice can be identified and outcomes monitored.

Pleomorphic adenoma of the lip: a case report and literature review.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) most commonly affects the major salivary glands but can also involve the minor salivary glands, particularly those of the hard and soft palate. However, the current study aims to present a case of upper lip PA. A 29-year-old male presented with a painless, firm, slow-growing swelling (1.5 × 1.5 cm) on the left upper lip. Ultrasonography showed a solid, hypoechoic nodule with irregular margins and mild peripheral vascularity. The encapsulated tumor was excised, and histopathology confirmed PA. At the 7-month follow-up, no evidence of recurrence was observed. Though typi…

Reconstruction of functional human lips utilizing a prelaminated flap.

Lips form a structure that are difficult to reconstruct after a traumatic avulsion injury or cancer ablative surgery secondary to loss of volumetric muscle mass. Traditional tissue engineering approaches of in vitro fabrication of mature tissue constructs can supply an alternative to the current surgical standard of care for functional lip reconstruction. We demonstrate a hybrid approach that combines the advantages of in situ muscle flap prefabrication with in vitro fabrication of an autogenous mucocutaneous construct as the laminate for prelamination to form a designer microvascular muscle f…

Surgical Lip Repositioning in Search of Aesthetics - A Case Series.

INTRODUCTION: The gummy smile (GS) or excessive gum visibility (EGV) is an aesthetic concern that affects an individual's attractiveness and personality. TREATMENT PLANNING: Lip Repositioning surgery (LRP) is a less invasive surgery that can be attributed to treating EGV due to hypermobile lip muscles or mild-to-moderate vertical maxillary excess (VME). Three patients went through LRP surgery by stripping overlying mucosa from the buccal vestibule, followed by suturing the lip mucosa to the mucogingival junction (MGJ), creating shallow vestibule and restricted muscle pull and reducing gingiva…
