Rhinoliths are calcareous concretions, consisting mainly of calcium and magnesium carbonates and phosphates. They can vary in size and shape, from small bodies to massive growths, and may invade adjacent structures. A 75-year-old female with a history of purulent discharge, nasal obstruction, and headache was observed in the ENT Department, University of Rome "Tor Vergata". Clinical examination revealed a giant rhinolith completely obstructing the right nasal cavity. Curiously, a dental CT scan showed a bony destruction area related to a residual dental cyst that had migrated superiorly into t

A 12-year-old Paso Fino mare was evaluated for a chronic nasal and ocular discharge. A calcification was identified eroding through the nasal mucosa of the middle meatus. Differential considerations for this mass included dacryolith, nasal calculus, or calcified tooth root abscess. Anatomical location and case history and progression supported a dacryolith. Following removal, the calculus was submitted for mineralogic analysis. The calculus was primarily carbonate hydroxylapatite (Ca10(PO4)3(CO3)3(OH)2) with a minor NaCl halite constituent. Dacryoliths, or nasolacrimal calculi, are an uncommon

Cross-sectional imaging has demonstrated an increasing role in the evaluation of the orbits and the periorbital structures. The case presented in this article demonstrates the rare finding of a dacryolith by CT. To our knowledge, little has been reported on cross-sectional imaging characteristics of this entity in the recent radiologic literature. We demonstrated that CT can be a useful tool in diagnosing both dacryolithiasis and dacryocystitis. Obtaining an early diagnosis of dacryolithiasis is optimal to avoid potential complications, particularly because treatment is often curative.

We present a case of 2 brothers with idiopathic chronic pancreatitis associated with pancreatic duct stones which could be successfully disintegrated by extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). An obvious etiology for the pancreatolithiasis, like alcohol or biliary disease, was lacking and point mutations of the cationic trypsinogen gene exons 2 and 3 were not detected in the long arm of the 7th chromosome. However, a hereditary etiology could not be precluded since pancreatolithiasis occurred in the siblings. There has been no recurrence of pancreatic stones during 42 months of follow-up…

BACKGROUND: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most common cause of recurrent vertigo and is typically monocanalicular, affecting a single semicircular canal at a time. Multicanalicular involvement, particularly when associated with canalith jam (CJ) or conversion to cupulolithiasis, is rare and poses significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 76-year-old woman presented with acute positionally triggered vertigo following a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) from a road traffic accident (motorbike slip with cranial impact; transient loss of conscio…

Rhinoliths are calcareous concretions of the nasal cavity formed around a nidus that may be endogenous (eg, dislodged tooth) or an exogenous foreign body (eg, plastic bead inserted by a child). Rhinoliths are often found incidentally on endoscopy or imaging to assess for other pathologies. The incidence is estimated to be 1 in 10 000 of all otolaryngology outpatient presentations, but this is likely to be an underestimate due to the often asymptomatic nature of this condition. We describe the unique case of a rhinolith that developed from a marijuana-filled balloon that the patient attempted t

Tonsillolith is a calcified mass in the tonsil and/or its surrounding tissue, which is considered to be caused by chronic tonsillitis. However, here we hypothesized that a tonsillolith can also be formed by chronic saliva stasis in the tonsillar tissue, without any signs of chronic inflammation. We present the case of a 32-year-old male patient with a large tonsillolith. We reviewed his medical files, pre-operative imaging and intraoperative findings. During a standard tonsillectomy, we encountered a large tonsillolith measuring 3.1 × 2.6 cm. Additionally, a careful dissection of the lower pol

Allergic rhinitis is one of the most common causes of nasal obstruction, but other diseases need to be considered particularly when the clinical course is getting worse. We present a patient with known mild persistent allergic rhinitis due to house dust mites who experienced progressive worsening of nasal obstruction with associated hyposmia and mucopurulent discharge. The lack of improvement of the patient's symptoms prompted the re-evaluation of the case. Skin prick tests for airborne allergens confirmed sensitisation only to house dust mites. Nasal endoscopy and facial CT scan revealed a hu

Enterolithiasis or formation of gastrointestinal concretions is an uncommon medical condition that develops in the setting of intestinal stasis in the presence of the intestinal diverticula, surgical enteroanastomoses, blind pouches, afferent loops, incarcerated hernias, small intestinal tumors, intestinal kinking from intra-abdominal adhesions, and stenosing or stricturing Crohn's disease and intestinal tuberculosis. Enterolithiasis is classified into primary and secondary types. Its prevalence ranges from 0.3% to 10% in selected populations. Proximal primary enteroliths are composed of chole…

Broncholithiasis is a rare condition in which calcified material erodes into the tracheobronchial tree. Most are caused from a fungal, nocardial, mycobacterial, or silicosis-related granulomatous lymphadenitis. Over time, the peribronchial lymph nodes become calcified; thereafter, with the normal repetitive motions of respiration, circulation, and deglutition, the calcifications erode into the lumen of the airway. This condition can be challenging to diagnose as its symptoms can mimic many more common diseases. The most common symptoms are wheezing, chronic cough, and dyspnea; thus, it was pre…

Broncho-oesophageal fistulas in broncholithiasis are extremely rare. Preceding lithoptysis is only seen infrequently. We report on a 68-year-old patient who complained of cough for more than 3 years. 5 months prior to admission he had hemoptysis and expectorated several greyish stones of up to 5 mm diameter. Endoscopy revealed a small excavation at the medial wall of the left main bronchus. Compared to a former CT, an actual CT scan of the thorax showed a small fistula between the oesophagus and the left main bronchus and revealed a missing calcification at this site. The patient underwent a l…

Broncholithiasis is an uncommon pulmonary problem that may present with life-threatening complications. We report one case of broncholithiasis. A 49-year-old female presented with hemoptysis. Chest X-ray and computed tomography (CT) showed left interlobar lymph node calcification near the interlobar pulmonary artery, and calcification continued into the basal bronchus. Bronchoscopy demonstrated pedunculated granulation tissue in the left B8 bronchus obstructing the lumen. We did not recommend endobronchial removal because of the risk of bleeding, so we proposed surgical treatment. We performed…

Broncholithiasis is defined as a condition in which calcified or ossified material is present within the bronchial lumen. Radiographic findings of broncholithiasis include airway obstruction such as atelectasis, mucoid impaction, bronchiectasis, and expiratory air trapping. Broncholithiasis is strongly suggested at computed tomography (CT) when an endobronchial or peribronchial calcified nodule is associated with findings of bronchial obstruction. Volume data acquisition by means of helical CT with sections less than 3 mm in thickness and multiplanar reformation along the bronchial tree are he…

Cystinuria is a genetic disorder of cystine transport, including defective protein b0,+AT (encoded by SLC7A9), and/or rBAT (encoded by SLC3A1). Patients present hyperexcretion of cystine in the urine, recurrent cystine lithiasis, and progressive decline in kidney function. Moreover, heterodimer transport is defective. To date, little omics data are accessible regarding this metabolic disease caused by membrane proteins. Since membrane function is closely related to changes in the lipidome, we decided to explore the changes in kidney tissue of a self-established cystinuria rat model by performi…
