Healthcare and housing provision for a UK homeless community: a qualitative service evaluation.

OBJECTIVES: Homelessness is both a significant determinant and consequence of health and social inequalities. To better meet healthcare needs, dedicated mental health and general nurses were implemented to deliver outreach healthcare to people experiencing homelessness in one United Kingdom (UK) county. During COVID-19, the UK Government also instructed local authorities to accommodate individuals sleeping rough and have a national target to end rough sleeping. This qualitative study explored experiences of this nurse-let outreach service and housing journeys during and beyond COVID-19 among p

Exploring the relationship between self-management behaviour, family function and health information adoption behaviour in Chinese diabetic foot patients: a mixed-methods study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic foot is a major burden and threat to individuals, families and society, making it imperative to promote good self-management behaviour. However, although nurses have provided these patients with excellent health knowledge, their self-management remains unsatisfactory. Although researches have shown that self-management requires family involvement, no research has been conducted in China on family function, specifically in the diabetic foot. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the relationship between self-management, family functioning, and health information adoption

Psychosocial health in adolescent unmarried motherhood in rural Uganda: Implications for community-based collaborative mental health education, and empowerment strategies in the prevention of depression and suicide.

Teenage pregnancy rates in Uganda are among the highest in sub-Saharan Africa. Child marriage is often the result of unmarried teenage pregnancy and is recognised by Uganda's government as a form of sexual violence and an outcome of inequality. However, unmarried motherhood incurs stigma and shame within traditionally living rural communities. Using co-produced Open Space and ethnographic methods, we examined the psychosocial impact of unmarried motherhood on girls and their communities, and explored problem-solving with key local stakeholders. Findings indicate that girls experience extreme s

Low-cost PM2.5 sensors can help identify driving factors of poor air quality and benefit communities.

Air quality is critical for public health. Residents rely chiefly on government agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in the United States to establish standards for the measurement of harmful contaminants including ozone, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), and fine particulate matter at or below 2.5 μm. According to the California Air Resources Board [1], "short-term PM2.5 exposure (up to 24-h duration) has been associated with premature mortality, increased hospital admissions for heart or lung causes, acute and chronic bronchitis, asthma

Continued Endemic Wild Poliovirus Transmission in Security-Compromised Areas - Nigeria, 2016.

On August 10, 2016, 2 years after the most recent wild poliovirus (WPV) case was reported in Nigeria (in July 2014) (1), two WPV cases were … lemented. The plan initially called for vaccination of 815,791 children during August 15-18 in five local government areas (LGAs) in the immediate vicinity of the first two WPV cases. Subsequently, the plan was expanded to regionally synchronized supplementary immunization activities (SIAs), conducted during August 27-December 6 in five Lake Chad basin countries a …

Spatial Dynamics and High Risk Transmission Pathways of Poliovirus in Nigeria 2001-2013.

The polio eradication programme in Nigeria has been successful in reducing incidence to just six confirmed cases in 2014 and zero to date in 2015, but prediction and management of future outbreaks remains a concern. A Poisson mixed effects model was used to describe poliovirus spread between January 2001 and November 2013, incorporating the strength of connectivity between districts (local government areas, LGAs) as estimated by three models of human mobility: simple distance, gravity and radiation models. Potential explanatory variables associated with the case numbers in each LGA were invest…

Otolaryngological, head and neck manifestations in HIV-infected patients seen at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria, South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest incidence of HIV infection. According to recent census statistics, 5.6 million people in South Africa (SA) are HIV-positive, the highest number of infected individuals worldwide. Over 80% of HIV-infected individuals will present with ear, nose and throat (ENT) manifestations. Previous studies show that oral diseases seem to be the most common ENT-related manifestation, reported in about 40 - 50% of HIV-infected patients. In SA, there is lack of local information regarding the otolaryngological and head and neck manifestations in HIV-infected indiv

Nothing can defeat combined hands (Abashize hamwe ntakibananira): protective processes and resilience in Rwandan children and families affected by HIV/AIDS.

In Rwanda, the dual vectors of HIV and legacy of the 1994 genocide have had devastating consequences for children and families. In this and other low-resource settings, extreme poverty, poor access to services, family conflict, and other adversities put children and families affected by HIV/AIDS at increased risk of mental health problems. However, even in the face of tremendous hardship, many children and families demonstrate better than expected outcomes. To design interventions that harness these natural sources of resilience, greater knowledge of local protective processes is needed. This

Hydration-Induced Transition from Site-Controlled to Diffusion-Controlled Ion Transport in Montmorillonite Interlayers.

Ion transport in clay minerals is governed by hydration (interlayer water content), yet the underlying molecular mechanisms remain insufficiently understood. Specifically, it is unclear whether water simply reduces migration barriers or fundamentally alters the nature of transport. Here, we combine density functional theory (DFT) with two-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) mapping to investigate the mobility of Na+ and K+ in montmorillonite interlayers as a function of water content. In water-free conditions, the energy landscape is strongly corrugated, exhibiting pronounced minima and

Building health research capacity in Africa: the Einstein-Rwanda research and capacity building program.

The growing demand for healthcare services and the burden of diseases such as cancer in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) requires locally-led and setting-relevant evidence that should be driven by local investigators. However, there is a huge gap in the health research capacity to generate such evidence in most of SSA, particularly in Rwanda. With a changing focus and the willingness of investigators and funders from high-income countries (HICs) to support investigators and research from SSA, it is important to build strong, successful, and sustained partnerships. In this perspective, we describe the

Exploring the Interface Between International Nongovernmental Organizations and Local Vietnamese Hospitals in Cleft Care.

BACKGROUND: Despite recent advances in cleft care, Vietnam continues to have extensive involvement from international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), creating a fragmented system with limited coordination. This project seeks to establish a baseline understanding of Vietnam's cleft care landscape, including major international NGOs and their collaborations with local partners, costs and insurance coverage, and patterns applicable to other low- and middle-income countries with NGO-supported cleft care. METHODS: We conducted a mixed-methods study using literature review and semi-structured

How can critical actors be incentivised to take a systems approach to pursue preventative public health?

INTRODUCTION: In this article we explore how critical actors can be incentivised to take a systems approach to pursue preventative public health. More specifically, we focus on the link between urban environments and their effect on non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as obesity, cancers, cardiovascular and respiratory disease. Improving urban environments as a route to preventative public health is well known but it is complicated and requires multi-actor decision-making. For example, reducing cardiovascular disease through better urban design will require global investment companies, cent

Hidden Burden of Cystic Echinococcosis in Arequipa, Peru: An Unrecognized Population at Risk.

Peru carries the highest burden of cystic echinococcosis (CE) in South America, yet major geographic gaps persist in understanding the distribution and intensity of the disease. The Arequipa region in southern Peru has historically been considered nonendemic, with no previous systematic clinical characterization of CE, despite increasing reports. Clinical records of 129 of 177 CE surgical cases treated between December 2011 and November 2013 at a government-funded CE surgical unit at a major referral hospital were analyzed. This represents the first structured clinical assessment of CE in Areq
