Pros and cons in tinnitus brain: Enhancement of global connectivity for alpha and delta waves.

Interactions among cortical areas of tinnitus brain remained unclear. Weaker alpha and stronger delta activities in tinnitus have been noted over auditory cortices. However, the interplay between a single substrate with whole brain within alpha/delta band remained unknown. Thirty-one patients with chronic tinnitus were recruited. Thirty-four healthy volunteers served as controls. Magnetoencephalographic measurements of spontaneous activities were performed. The strength of alpha/delta activities was analyzed. By dividing cortices into 38 regions of interest (ROIs), measurements of connectivity

Age-related visual dynamics in HIV-infected adults with cognitive impairment.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether aging differentially affects neural activity serving visuospatial processing in a large functional neuroimaging study of HIV-infected participants and to determine whether such aging effects are attributable to differences in the duration of HIV infection. METHODS: A total of 170 participants, including 93 uninfected controls and 77 HIV-infected participants, underwent neuropsychological assessment followed by neuroimaging with magnetoencephalography (MEG). Time-frequency analysis of the MEG data followed by advanced image reconstruction of neural oscillatory…

Hyperactive frontolimbic and frontocentral resting-state gamma connectivity in major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a system-level disorder affecting multiple functionally integrated cerebral networks. Nevertheless, their temporospatial organization and potential disturbance remain mostly unknown. The present report tested the hypothesis that deficient temporospatial network organization separates MDD and healthy controls (HC), and is linked to symptom severity of the disorder. METHODS: Eyes-closed resting-state magnetoencephalographic (MEG) recordings were obtained from twenty-two MDD and twenty-two HC subjects. Beamforming source localization and functional

Hand Motor Actions of Children With Cerebral Palsy Are Associated With Abnormal Sensorimotor Cortical Oscillations.

Background. The neuroimaging literature on cerebral palsy (CP) has predominantly focused on identifying the structural aberrations (eg, fiber track integrity), with very few studies examining neural activity within the key networks that serve the production of hand movements. Objective. We aimed to start to fill this knowledge gap by using magnetoencephalographic brain imaging to quantify the temporal dynamics of the sensorimotor oscillations during a hand motor action. Methods: Children with CP (n = 12; MACS [Manual Abilities Classification System] levels I-III) and typically developing (TD)

Oscillatory networks of high-level mental alignment: A perspective-taking MEG study.

Mentally imagining another's perspective is a high-level social process, reliant on manipulating internal representations of the self in an embodied manner. Recently Wang et al. (2016) showed that theta-band (3-7 Hz) brain oscillations within the right temporo-parietal junction (rTPJ) and brain regions coding for motor/body schema contribute to the process of perspective-taking. Using a similar paradigm, we set out to unravel the extended functional brain network in detail. Increasing the angle between self and other perspective was accompanied by longer reaction times and increases in theta p

Neural Integration of Stimulus History Underlies Prediction for Naturalistically Evolving Sequences.

Forming valid predictions about the environment is crucial to survival. However, whether humans are able to form valid predictions about natural stimuli based on their temporal statistical regularities remains unknown. Here, we presented subjects with tone sequences with pitch fluctuations that, over time, capture long-range temporal dependence structures prevalent in natural stimuli. We found that subjects were able to exploit such naturalistic statistical regularities to make valid predictions about upcoming items in a sequence. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) recordings revealed that slow, arr…

Neuromagnetic hand and foot motor sources recruited during action verb processing.

The current study investigated sensorimotor involvement in the processing of verbs describing actions performed with the hands, feet, or no body part. Actual movements were used to identify neuromagnetic sources for hand and foot actions. These sources constrained the analysis of verb processing. While hand and foot sources picked up activation in all three verb conditions, peak amplitudes showed an interaction of source and verb condition at 200 ms after word onset, thereby reflecting effector-specificity. Specifically, hand verbs elicited significantly higher peak amplitudes than foot verbs

Tinnitus and neural plasticity (Tonndorf lecture at XIth International Tinnitus Seminar, Berlin, 2014).

Ten years ago, animal models of noise-induced hearing loss predicted three cortical neural correlates of tinnitus resulting from noise-induced hearing loss: increased spontaneous firing rates, increased neural synchrony, and reorganization of tonotopic maps. Salicylate also induces tinnitus, however, the cortical correlates were reduced spontaneous firing rates, unchanged neural synchrony but some change to the tonotopic map. In both conditions increased central gain, potentially a correlate of hyperacusis, was found. Behavioral animal models suggested that tinnitus occurred, albeit not in all

QEEG changes during switch from depression to hypomania/mania: a case report.

BACKGROUND: QEEG cordance and low-resolution electromagnetic tomography (LORETA) are relatively new applications of QEEG. Four small-scale studies have shown that decreases of QEEG prefrontal theta cordance after the first week on new antidepressants predict clinical response to treatment in patients with unipolar depression. METHODS: We calculated prefrontal theta cordance and changes in 3D distribution of brain electrical activity using LORETA in the case of a 54-year old man experiencing his third depressive episode. RESULTS: We did not detect a decrease of prefrontal theta cordance after

Resting state oscillatory brain dynamics in Parkinson's disease: an MEG study.

OBJECTIVE: The pathophysiological mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction and dementia in Parkinson's disease (PD) are still poorly understood. Altered resting state oscillatory brain activity may reflect underlying neuropathological changes. The present study using magneto encephalography (MEG) was set up to study differences in the pattern of resting state oscillatory brain activity in groups of demented and non-demented PD patients and healthy, elderly controls. METHODS: The pattern of MEG background oscillatory activity was studied in 13 demented PD patients, 13 non-demented PD patients and 1

Direct neurophysiological evidence for spatial suppression surrounding the focus of attention in vision.

The spatial focus of attention has traditionally been envisioned as a simple spatial gradient of enhanced activity that falls off monotonically with increasing distance. Here, we show with high-density magnetoencephalographic recordings in human observers that the focus of attention is not a simple monotonic gradient but instead contains an excitatory peak surrounded by a narrow inhibitory region. To demonstrate this center-surround profile, we asked subjects to focus attention onto a color pop-out target and then presented probe stimuli at various distances from the target. We observed that t

Oscillatory activity in the occipitotemporal area related to the visual perception of letters of a first/second language and pseudoletters.

The objective of this study was to reveal the oscillatory activity in the occipitotemporal area related to the visual perception of the letters of first (L1) and second languages (L2) and pseudoletters. We recorded neuromagnetic signals while Korean native speakers were exposed to a phonogram of Korean, acquired at school age as their L1 (Hangul), that of Japanese, learned in adulthood as a L2 (Kana) and pseudoletter (Pseudo), and quantified the event-related desynchronization (ERD) and synchronization (ERS). In all conditions, sustained ERDs in the alpha band were observed in both hemispheres

Abnormal response recovery in the right somatosensory cortex of dyslexic adults.

Somatosensory evoked fields (SEFs) to repetitive tactile stimuli were recorded from eight dyslexic and eight normal-reading adults. Three successive stimuli, produced by diaphragms driven by compressed air, were delivered to thumb, index finger and thumb in sequence, with stimulus-onset asynchronies (SOAs) of 100 and 200 ms in different runs. Both hands were stimulated alternatingly with an intertrain interval of 1 s, and the responses were recorded with a whole-scalp neuromagnetometer. Whereas the primary somatosensory cortex responses to the first stimuli of the trains did not differ between

Magnetic source imaging in fixation-off sensitivity: relationship with alpha rhythm.

A patient in whom a variety of abnormal EEG findings can be elicited by elimination of central vision and fixation demonstrates fixation-off sensitivity. The underlying mechanisms of fixation-off sensitivity and its relationship with alpha rhythm remain unclear. To obtain a better understanding of this issue, we used a whole-head magnetoencephalograph to study an epileptic child with fixation-off sensitivity resulting in a 3-Hz, large-amplitude oscillation (300 microV) over the occipital regions on the EEG. Magnetic source localization revealed alpha activity around the calcarine fissure and s

Cortical activation during oesophageal stimulation: a neuromagnetic study.

We investigated the neuromagnetic responses to mechanical stimulation of the oesophagus. In six healthy right-handed volunteers (mean age 31.6 years) the proximal and distal oesophagus were stimulated by electronically controlled pump-inflation of a silicone balloon once every 4.5-5.5 sec (dwell time 145 msec). The balloon volume was adjusted to induce different sensation levels (i) just above threshold of perception, (ii) strong sensation and (iii) painful sensation. Evoked magnetic brain responses were recorded time-locked to stimulus onset with a Neuromag-122TM whole-head neuromagnetometer

Motor cortical reflex myoclonus: a case study with MEG.

Cortical reflex myoclonus usually depends for its generation on the hyperexcitability of sensory cortex, which manifests itself as an enhanced somatosensory evoked potential (SEP). A 25-year-old female, presenting with involuntary jerky dorsiflexion of the left foot, was found to have cortical reflex myoclonus which was aggravated during intended movements. The jerks were also elicited by electrical stimulation of the posterior tibial nerve, although the SEP evoked by the same stimulus was normal in latency and amplitude. Both the spontaneous spikes and the premyoclonus spike demonstrated by j

Giant somatosensory evoked magnetic field in patients with myoclonus epilepsy.

We investigated somatosensory evoked magnetic fields (SEFs) and somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) in patients with myoclonus epilepsy. The median nerve was stimulated at the wrist, and responses were recorded over the contralateral hemisphere. The source of the enlarged cortical component of the giant SEF was localized on the post-central sensory cortex. The P1 component of the giant cortical response was composed mainly of a tangentially oriented dipole at area 3b. This is the first magnetoencephalographic analysis of an abnormally enlarged somatosensory cortical response.

Comparison of single current dipole and magnetic field tomography analyses of the cortical response to auditory stimuli.

Measurements of the magnetic field elicited by a 50 ms long auditory stimulus, from three normal subjects and one head injured subject, are used to estimate the three dimensional distribution of generators in the brain. The resulting images are compared with point source solutions obtained with the usual single current dipole fitting procedures, over a latency range which includes the extrema in the (average) measured signal. In all cases considered, 100 or so epochs time-locked to the stimulus were magnetically recorded. These were averaged, and then analyzed using two techniques; a new distr

Adolescent predisposition to binge drinking is associated with differences in inhibitory control MEG event-related fields.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescent binge drinking (BD) is a major public health concern, yet little is known about the neural markers that precede alcohol initiation. This longitudinal study examined whether magnetoencephalography (MEG) event-related fields (ERFs) recorded during inhibitory control predict later BD. METHODS: Eighty-one alcoholnaïve adolescents initially completed a Go/No-Go task during MEG acquisition, alongside self-report measures of impulsivity, sensation seeking, and executive functioning. After two years, 44 participants remained eligible and were classified as controls (CN, n = 2…
