Osteotome sinus floor elevation procedure for first molar single-gap implant rehabilitation: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: This case series describes single implant rehabilitation in the maxillary first molar sites. It aims to show the surgical approaches carried out versus the residual bone height (RBH) and to evaluate implant success rate and bone anchorage height after 1 year. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Placement of 10-mm-long tapered bone level implants was carried out according to the RBH: when RBH ≥10 mm, standard implant placement; when 6 mm < RBH < 10 mm, osteotome sinus floor elevation procedure (OSFE) without graft; and, when RBH ≤6 mm, OSFE with graft. RESULTS: Fourteen patients received 15

Micro and nanoparticle deposition in human nasal passage pre and post virtual maxillary sinus endoscopic surgery.

Realistic 3-D models of the human nasal passages were developed pre and post virtual uncinectomy and Middle Meatal Antrostomy. A 3-D computational domain was constructed by a series of coronal CT scan images from a healthy subject. Then a virtual uncinectomy intervention and maxillary antrostomy were performed on the left nasal passage by removing the uncinate process and exposing the maxillary sinus antrum. For several breathing rates corresponding to low or moderate activities, the airflows in the nasal passages were simulated numerically pre and post virtual routine maxillary sinus endoscop

Intraoral desmoplastic fibroma: a manifestation of tuberous sclerosis.

Desmoplastic fibroma (DF) is a benign but locally aggressive tumor usually recognized as an intraosseous counterpart of soft tissue fibromatosis in both gnathic and extra-gnathic sites. The most common site is mandible followed by pelvis and long bones. Maxilla has been reported to be involved very rarely. Desmoplastic fibroma is recently being considered to be one of the oral manifestations of tuberous sclerosis rather than a coincidental finding. We report an unusual case of a girl with a previous diagnosis of tuberosclerosis who presented at 8 years with an oral lesion diagnosed as desmopla

A hollow-bulb interim obturator for maxillary resection. A case report.

The treatment of hemimaxillectomy patients include the construction of an interim obturator in the wound healing period. With the aim of simplifying this process, we describe construction of an obturator in a short single visit, in the dental chair with no need for impressions or for laboratory services. The obturator comprises: (i) the surgical obturator and (ii) a hollow light-cured resin bulb built onto the base, and providing a large surface for bonding of the soft reline material. The advantages of this approach are rapid construction and ease of ongoing adjustment during the healing proc

Altering the angulation of a curved osteotome--does it have effects on the type of pterygomaxillary disjunction in Le Fort I osteotomy? An experimental study.

A standard Le Fort I osteotomy was performed on 12 cadavers to determine whether the incidence of pterygoid plate fractures could be reduced by increasing the angle of the curved osteotome relative to the sagittal plane. In the group where an osteotome with the usual angulation was employed, fractures occurred on 9 of 12 sides. In the increased angulation group, 5 of 12 pterygoid plates were fractured. All fractures were restricted to the level of the horizontal osteotomy cut. It is concluded that increased angulation of a curved osteotome can decrease the incidence of fractures of the pterygo

Paranasal Volume Enhancement With Sticky Bone to Improve Nasolabial Fold Aesthetics in Orthognathic Surgery Patients: A Case Report.

PURPOSE: The paranasal region is a frequent source of aesthetic complaints in patients with dentofacial deformities, and soft tissue projection in this area does not always follow the skeletal movements achieved in orthognathic surgery. Sticky Bone-a particulate bone graft matrix agglutinated by platelet-rich fibrin (PRF)-has an established role in regenerative procedures in implant dentistry; however, to the best of the authors' knowledge, its use for paranasal volume enhancement during orthognathic surgery had not been previously described. The present report introduces this novel applicatio

Flapless placement of zygomatic implants using dynamic navigation: an innovative technical note.

Zygomatic implants are routinely used for the rehabilitation of the midface and edentulous maxilla; the procedure is carried out under general anaesthesia and requires the direct lifting of the Schneiderian membrane. A prefabricated surgical guide is usually used to direct the position of the zygomatic implants during surgery. This proof-of-concept study explored an innovative flapless approach for placement of zygomatic implants guided by dynamic navigation. Under local anaesthesia eight zygomatic implants were placed using a flapless technique. The preplanned position of zygomatic implants w

Surgical approach of ectopic maxillary third molar avulsion: Systematic review and meta-analysis.

Ectopic maxillary third molars (EMTM) are extracted mainly by the Caldwell-Luc technique but also by nasal endoscopy. There is currently no consensus on the treatment of this eruption and its management is heterogeneous and multidisciplinary. Two literature searches were performed with no time restrictions via Pubmed. In the first, we used the keywords "ectopic AND third molar" and in the second the keywords "dentigerous cyst AND ectopic third molar". For both articles, epidemiological, symptomatic, radiological and surgical data were recorded. Overall, 33 eligible articles were identified inv

Immediate loading of dental implant after sinus floor elevation with osteotome technique: a clinical report and preliminary radiographic results.

Edentulous ridges in the posterior maxilla are often compromised by reduced bone volume. This anatomic condition often limits dental implant placement of 10 mm in length without prior or simultaneous sinus augmentation. The osteotome technique is an alternative and conservative technique for sinus floor augmentation and immediate implant placement in the posterior region of the maxillary jaw. According to the relevant literature, the osteotome technique appears to be a predictable and safe method for augmenting bone at the sinus floor and to improve bone density and quality of the implant site
